Beschreibung:Bristol, B4183. - Shipton & Mooney, 43029. - Substantially identical with Evans 14777 except that that impression has the imprint (absent here): Salem, Printed by E. Russell, in Main-Str. (pr. 8d.). For the present impression, Bristol supplies the imprint [Danvers? 1776], evidently assuming that Russell dropped the imprint from a second impression upon relocating to Danvers. However, Russell did not begin printing in Danvers until March 1777, and would likelier have used a Danvers imprint in that case. Both impressions have an advertisement at foot of p. 25: E. Russell, at his printing-office in Main-Street, Salem. - Though attributed by Evans to Ezra Gleason, this almanac is one of the Bickerstaff series generally regarded as the work of Benjmain West. Cf. Nichols, C.L. "Notes on the almanacs of Massachusetts." Proceedings of the American Antiquarian Society, n.s. v. 22 (1912): 34-35, and the Dictionary of American biography. The eclipse notes and the notes on the calendar pages are identical, except for a slight variance in the calculations, with those in West's New England almanack, or Lady's and gentleman's diary, for 1777 (Providence : John Carter). The preface is signed: Isaac Bickerstaff. - Title vignette: portrait of John Hancock. Followed by 18 lines of verse "On the Hon. John Hancock, Esq. By a lady."
