Summary
The American playwright Arthur Miller who called Eimuntas
Nekrošius
a genius
in
1985
as though looked into the future. Thirty years have passed since the first
best performance Kvadratas (The Square)
(1980)
by the famous director but at¬
tention to the Lithuanian theatre artist has not been decreasing. This is testified to
by the assessments of his performances and tours, awards presented to the direc¬
tor in his native country and abroad, as well as attempts to describe and give the
name to the phenomenon of the
Nekrošius
theatre. It can be said with confidence
that
Nekrošius'
creative biography that began with the debut of Shelagh Delaney
A Taste of Honey
( 1977)
continues and every new decade opens up new sides to
the creative work of this director.

(2002)
by the theatre critic
Ramuné
Marcinkevičiůté
was devoted to
Nekrošius'
creative period in Lithuania between
1977
and
1991.
The metaphor "space behind words" used by the author is suitable
to characterise his method of directing: the performance for
Nekrošius
is many-
voiced and multicoloured human existence embodied in the space and time of
the stage, the story of man's fate. Even though these stories have changed in the
course of thirty years, the director remained faithful to his method
-
the action,
the scene and the movement are the most important tools of
Nekrošius'
work with
actors and a dramatic or literary piece. The Russian critic of theatre and literature
Vladislav
Ivanov
who was one of the first to investigate Eimuntas
Nekrošius'
crea¬
tive work especially thoroughly in his famous study Eimuntas
Nekrošius
Magi¬
cal Theatre
(1987)
revealed the sacrality of the
Nekrošius
theatre: making use of
Peter Brook's words the theoretician called the
Nekrošius
theatre "sacred"
-
the
simplest things acquire sacrality there, life is metaphysical depths and a human
being and his dramatic experience are shrouded in unfathomable love. No mat¬
ter how greatly the reality surrounding the director changed during these years,
whatever different texts he chose for his stage interpretations, the
Nekrošius
thea¬
tre has always retained its sacrality.

Performances
directed by
Nekrošius
in Lithuania and abroad between
1991
and
2011
are another stage in his creative biography reflecting the director's maturity
and his attitude to the art of the theatre. During that period the geography of his
performances expanded, they acquired new features, and the director entered the
world opera. The years between
1997
and
2000
deserve special mention when
Nekrošius
produced his tragic trilogy
-
William Shakespeare's Hamlet, Macbeth
and Othello. Looking at the performances staged by
Nekrošius
in Lithuania be¬
tween
1991
and
2000
and their active reflection, this period of the Lithuanian the¬
atre can be safely called a decade of the
Nekrošius
theatre. His performances were
not only greatly welcome but they were as though a measure of the pulse of the
Lithuanian theatre, the standard of value for the young generation of the creators
of the theatre. After
2000,
for the first time in Lithuania, the director adapted the
work of national writing Metai (The Seasons) by Kristijonas Donelaitis
(2003)
to
the stage, directed The Song of Songs on the motifs of the Old Testament
(2004),
realised his long-cherished idea
-
Goethe's Faust
(2006),
and directed The Idiot
by Fyodor Dostoyevsky
(2009).
During that decade, alongside drama perform¬
ances the number of opera performances in Italy, Russia and Lithuania was on
the increase.

Interviews, reviews, articles
/1991-2010/
is
the first publication presenting the most significant critical texts on
Nekrošius'
theatre productions as well as his interviews. This compilation reflects the concept
of his theatre and theatre direction and enables to understand the development of
Lithuanian reception of his ideas. The main goal of the editor of this book was to
create the space of the dialogue between the directors' thoughts and critical texts,
where the realities of theatre and life would be able to meet. The book is supple¬
mented by commentaries, the biography of Eimuntas
Nekrošius
and Lithuanian
bibliography of his performances.
