adam_text | THE LIBRARY OF THE CATHEDRAL CHAPTER
IN WŁOCŁAWEK
Summary
The library of the cathedral chapter is the oldest library in Włocławek.
Its beginning goes back to the times when the first wooden cathedral was
built on the bank of the Vistula river. The foundation of the sanctuary fol-
lowed the establishment of the bishopric in Kujawy in the middle of the
12th century. It surely housed prayer-books necessary to say mass. It is
unknown how large liturgical stock was gathered there. Due to numerous
floods, fires and other disasters the wooden cathedral was replaced by
a new brick Romanesque sanctuary which was built at a certain distance
from the Vistula. Bishop Michał Godziemba (1222-1252) was the initiator
of the enterprise. Unfortunately the building did not endure war dam-
ages and as a result bishop Maciej Gołańczewski started the construc-
tion of the third and final cathedral in Włocławek. His successor Zbylut
Gołańczewski continued its construction. In the beginning the sanctuary
was very simple, it lacked side chapels, chapter-house or numerous al-
tars. Its architectural character was subjected to constant changes: from
Gothic style through Baroque elements to the final regothization of the
cathedral at the end of the 19th century.
Members of the cathedral chapter, including prelates and canons,
were the administrators and hosts of the sanctuary. In the structure of
the diocese the chapter represented an advisory body for the bishop in
office. Its presence also added splendor to church services and state fes-
tivals. Onold was the first well-known dean of Włocławek s chapter. He
became the bishop of the diocese in 1161. The number of the members of
the chapter was subjected to changes. In the Middle Ages it was 28 and it
decreased to 14 during the period between the World Wars.
The prelates and canons of Włocławek, as the administrators of the
cathedral, were also responsible for the library it housed. They chose li-
brarians from their own circle who made decisions concerning the crea-

tion of inventories and conservation of the stock. They also reprimanded
unreliable keepers or readers.
As already mentioned, the beginning of the cathedral library goes
back to the 12th century when the necessary liturgical stock was being
gathered to enable church officials to say mass and give sacraments.
However, the first references to the liturgical books of Wloclawek s cathe-
dral come from as late as the 4th September 1437. A piece of information
which dates on this day concerns Wloclawek s citizens organizing a trial
against a Poznań painter, August. He was charged with stealing an an-
tiphonal from the cathedral church. He took advantage of the confusion
caused by an attack of the Teutonic Order in 1431. Obviously, apart from
the antiphonal, the chapter stock also contained missals, gospel books,
rituals and lectionaries.
Another reference that comes from the 15th century concerns the
conservation of three volumes which contained law texts. The capitular
documents from 1482 contain a receipt signed by a Włocławek scholastic
Wojciech from Książ who borrowed books from the treasury and obliged
himself to repair them.
In spite of the proofs that the library existed in the Medieval times,
nothing is known about its size. One can only assume that at the end of the
15th century the members of the chapter had a stock of about 100 volumes
at their disposal. The number of the oldest manuscripts of the capitular
province that is housed nowadays in the seminar library in Włocławek
may be the base for making the assumption. The seminar library contains
61 volumes mainly on biblicy, liturgy, homilies, law or theology. Ordo
Missae or Biblia sacra, created in the 14th century, belong to the oldest manu-
scripts. The actual value of the stock gathered in the capitula library was
described in its first catalogs created on the initiative of bishop Hieronim
Rozrażewski during his visits of the Włocławek cathedral in 1590 and
1594. The catalogs mention the stock of 206 volumes, including 99 manu-
scripts, and 141 volumes, including 54 manuscripts. The catalog record of
particular books was incomplete and sometimes it was only limited to the
name of the author, title or an arbitrary abbreviation for instance Homerus
de bello Troiano, Valerianus Maximus or The record included the
facts concerning book damages. For example Catalogus librorum ecclesiae
Cathedralis Wladislaviensis in libraria capitfrom 1590 includes additional
notes such as finoet principia caret and laceratus. In another catalog entitled

Index librorum Veneriabilis Capituli Ecclesie Cathedralis Wladislaviensis one
can find information on important donors such as the bishop of Pomerania
and Kujawy, Jakub from Sienno, or the archdeacon of Włocławek, Józef
Konarzewski. The order of recording particular positions was rather ac-
cidental. The books were probably recorded according to their place on
the shelves as in the record from 1594 which has a topographic character.
In this case the chapter secretary recorded the contents of seven bookcases.
In the beginning the capitular library, like other church libraries, gath-
ered its stock thanks to various donors. The books were given by bish-
ops of Pomerania and Kujawy and the members of the chapter. The gifts
mainly included liturgical volumes. Most of the gifts were given in testa-
ments or due to their lack called the dead hand law . De intestatis record
included in the statute of the cathedral chapter in 1499 regulated the ques-
tion of the books which were left. It instructed that the books should be
stored in the treasury or the church library.
A parchment missal ornamented with silver bumps given by bish-
op Jan Pella from Niewiesz (1421-1428) was the first recorded donation.
Many liturgical books were donated by other bihops: Jakub from Sienno
(1464-1473), Krzesław from Kruzowęki (1494-1503), Maciej Drzewiecki
(1513-1531), Jan Karnkowski (1531-1537), Mikołaj Wolski (1562-1567),
Stanisław Karnkowski (1567-1581) and HieronimRozrażewski (1581-1600).
Other donors included distinguished personages who had doctorate de-
grees from the universities of Cracow and Padua. They were known for
their love of books which resulted in the creation of ex-librises or superex-
librises. Hieronim Rozrażewski belonged to one of them. One of his gifts
was the manuscript of Wloclawek s Missal from 1590. He also donated
printed Gratianus law works Decretum (Lyons 1584) and Bonifacy VIII s
Liber Sextus decretalium (Lyons 1584).
The members of the chapter formed a large group which helped
the library gather its liturgical, medical or law stock. Mikołaj from
Przywieczorzyn (died inl496) was the first well-known donor of the group.
He had the function of Wloclawek s official (a judge in the Consistory).
He gave the chapter library two copies of commentaries by Dominicius
S. Geminiano Lectura super sexto Decretalium, which were popular at that
time (Venice 1486,1489). At the end of the 15th century Paweł from Łyczki
gave his entire collection of books to the library. The collection included
numerous law and liturgical volumes.

Summary
One can mention many canons who gave the library single copies of
missals. Nikodem Pczeniński (died in 1557) or Andrzej Witkowski (died
in 1558) belonged to one of them. One of more interesting gifts came from
Wloclawek s canon Dominik Kamieński who in 1545 gave the library four
medical volumes in the name of Urban Ulrich. The donor was a mem-
ber of the chapter, the head of Gdansk s Consistory. The books he gave
were practically the only positions of this kind housed at that time in
Wloclawek s library.
The growing number of books required a keeper who was chosen
from the members of the chapter. At first the keeper was appointed to deal
with intervention work as in the case of the canons Gabriel Parzniewski
or Stefan Zathowski who in 1515 had to catalog precious objects, includ-
ing books. Mikołaj babiński was ordered to look through and cleanse the
book stock. The work in the library usually required two canons who
were chosen during the meetings of the chapter. A change in the proce-
dure took place in 1593 when bishop Hieronim Rozrażewski established
a new office of chancellor in Wloclawek s chapter. The chancellor was
supposed to take care of the capitular registry, library and archives.
The original localization of the library is unknown. The books were
stored in the treasury and the vestries. One comes across a laconic state-
ment from 1516, inlibraria contents, which indicates that the books were
stored in separate places. Only after the chapter-house was built in 1521,
thanks to Maciej Drzewiecki s financial support, were the books located
in one place. Unfortunately the gathered stock occupied too much space
so in 1543 Piotr Piotrowski was assigned to remove positions which were
unnecessary or out of date, probably to an outbuilding. The books in the
chapter-house were subjected to constant control. The keepers took care
of the doors so that they were appropriately secured, solid and locked.
The library of Wloclawek s chapter was constantly growing due to
various gifts, purchases and ordered prints. One of more significant gifts
came from Franciszek Łącki, Wloclawek s suffragan (died in 1617) who
left 12 books on various topics in his last will: law, theology or the history
of the Church. Thanks to him the library received a work by Stanisław
Hozjusz, Confessio catholicae fidei Christiana (Mogunqa 1557). A canon
Baltazar Aleksander Gissa gave his collection of books to three church
libraries in Włocławek: the capitular, the reformatory and the seminary
one. Nowadays seminary stock contains 31 of his printed materials from

the 16th and 17th centuries. Another canon, Marcin Protficz (died in 1700)
made a similar division of his collection in his last will. The capitular li-
brary received a part of the collection. Kazimierz Benedykt Dąbrowski,
a Cystercian abbot from Oliwa, donated a particularly valuable gift in 1718.
It consisted of 81 positions, including the works of the Church Fathers,
Jeremias Drexelius among others, which are still stored in Włocławek.
Paweł Gostomski (died in 1732), Bonifacy Szembek (died in 1753), Kasper
Sokołowski (died in 1759), Bazyli Złocki (died 1780) or Wloclawek s suf-
fragans Jan Dembowski (died in 1790) and Cyprian Wolicki (died in 1775)
also donated their books to the library in the 18th century. In the first half
of the 19th century canons were rather not interested in donating their
books to the capitular library. Single volumes were only given by canons
Ignacy Stanisław Czyżewski (died in 1823), Ignacy Stanisław Stawiarski
(died in 1835) and Józef Janiszkiewicz (died in 1813).
The chapter enlarged the library stock also by purchasing books,
mainly liturgical ones: psalters, missals, antiphonals, agendas, law regu-
lations or magazines. Canon Bazyli Złocki was sent to Warsaw in 1779
to buy new editions of the constitutions from 1776 and 1779. There were
many such cases, however, what seems interesting is the fact that the au-
thorities occupying Poland at that time forced the purchase of the two
editions of Historyczno-biografcznego r życia feldmarszałka księcia warsza-
wskiego Paskiexvicza Eryzvanskiego, written by L.N. Tolstoy (Warsaw 1840,
1843). The authorities also made it obligatory to buy magazines such as
Dziennik Praw , Dziennik Urzędowy Województwa Mazowieckiego
and Ranna Zorza , which was published in Russian.
The stock of the capitular library grew due to gifts and purchases and
it required a new recording. At the beginning of the 18th century the chap-
ter assigned Jan Bieńkowski and Andrzej Mszczonowski to prepare the
record. However, it did not happen so. During general chapter meetings
in January or August the necessity of making a record of all books was
mentioned again but it was as late as 1688 when Marcin Protficz obliged
himself to deal with the task. The record was made. S. Librowski suggest-
ed that a notary, Jerzy Antoni Kunig was its author. It is unknown how
large the stock was at that time. Another record that comes from the turn
of 1727 and 1728 made by the secretary of the chapter, Franciszek Antoni
Sieniecki, was unfinished and did not give an answer as to the contents
of the library. He was probably the author of the record made in 1745 as

well. This record was initiated by a Włocławek canon, Bonifacy Szembek.
Catalogus Librarum In Archivo V[e]n[era]b[i]lis Capituli Vlad[islaviensis] ex-
istum contained 522 incomplete bibliographic descriptions of the books
gathered by the chapter.
Still other catalogs were made in 1760 (556 positions), in 1816 (857 po-
sitions), in 1827 (788 positions) and in 1840 (778 positions). They are still
preserved in the Diocese Archives in Włocławek. The records were usually
initiated by the chapter. However in 1760 and 1840 two catalogs were cre-
ated during the visit of bishops Antoni Kazimierz Ostrowski (1763-1777)
and Walenty Tomaszewski (1836-1850). The catalogs included sections
such as Libri Sacri, Contionatores, Libri Spirituále, Libri Liturgici, Theologi
Spectulativi, Thelogi Morales, Libri Canonici, Libri Iuridici, Concilia, Libri
Controversistici, Historici, Codices Regini Poloniae, Philosophi et Medici,
Scholastici or Libri Variarum Linguarum.
Chosen members of the chapter took care of the stock which includ-
ed nearly one thousand volumes. The first capitular decree concerning
Electio bibliotecarum comes from 1619. Special attention was paid to the
duties of the librarian who was to look after the stock, make its records
and lend books to canons. Jan Bieńkowski (died in 1621) and Andrzej
Mszczonowski (died in 1623) were the first chosen librarians. They were
followed by Sebastian Grotkowski (died in 1650), Marcin Protficz (died in
1700), Franciszek Antoni Sieniecki, Ludwik Bratoszewski (died in 1778),
Marcin Chyczewski (died in 1796), Aleksy Młodziejowski (died in 1787),
Ignacy Lniski (died in 1794), Tomasz Chajęcki (died in 1778), Ignacy
Mirosławski (died in 1792), Marcin Trojnarski (died in 1787), Andrzej
Fahl, Wojciech Dembowski (died in 1813), Ignacy Chehnicki (died in
1809), Mikołaj Chomentowski (died in 1824), Kajetan Dembowski (died in
1800), Ludwik Kuczkowski (died in 1825), Antoni Niewieściński (died in
1832), Edward Malczewski (died in 1847), Benedykt Cynka (died in 1837)
and Michał Marszewski (died in 1867). Unfortunately only few of them
took proper care of the capitular library. The stock was often unattended.
The superiors often had to remind the librarians of their duties as they
did not look after the order in the archives and the library. In 1632 there
were two bishops, Maciej Łubieński (1631-1641) and Mikołaj Gniewosz
(1641-1654) who put their whole heart to the matters of the library. When
in 1663 the superiors noticed disorder in the library they assigned canons
Michał Czerniakowski (died in 1665) and Aleksander Baltazar Gissa to

take care of the chapter-house. It was after the Swedish invasion of 1657
during which numerous precious objects were stolen from the vestry and
many books from the chapter-house.
Maciej Protficz belonged to the best keepers. He received a written
praise and 100 florins for cataloging the library stock and for keeping
it in order. Two hand-written notes had a great significance in preserv-
ing the library stock: Ex libris V[enerabilis] Capituli Vlad[islaviensis]
A[nno] D[omini] 1727 and Ex Bibliotheca VJenerabilis] Cap[itu]li
Vlad[islaviensis] 1728 a[nno]. They were left on capitular volumes by the
keeper Franciszek Antoni Sieniecki. They enabled the later identification
of the books preserved in the library. Benedykt Cynka, the secretary of the
chapter and the guardian of the cathedral, continued marking the stock.
He left pieces of paper with numbers on the edges of the books .In 1839 he
was followed by Michal Marszewski.
The properly secured stock was still housed in the chapter-house.
At the beginning of the 17th century, in 1622, a part of the stock was re-
moved from the chapter-house to the organ-loft. In the 18th century, al-
though additional rooms above the chapter-house were not built as in-
tended, the walls of the existing rooms were covered with new woolen
cloths. To secure the gathered stock the quality of the doors and locks
was constantly checked. It was not easy to keep the stock on the turn
of the 18th and the 19th centuries. Many books mouldered and got rotten
because of the cool and damp conditions in the chapter-house. It was nec-
essary to renovate the library rooms. In 1815 action was taken to rescue
the stock. The books were carried to vicars houses where they were dried
and cleansed from dirt.
The library stock did not change meaningfully or spectacularly until
the beginning of the 20th century. Bishop suffragan Karol Pollner (died in
1887) donated his book collection, which was the only significant gift at
that time. The collection included 192 positions which were immediately
recorded by a canon Stanislaw Chodynski after the donation was made.
Before he died Karol Pollner also gave his books to the chapter. They
were mainly written by Wawrzyniec Grabowski and included Cantionale
Ecclesiasticum (Gniezno 1873) and Rationale Sacramentorum (Nürnberg
1872). The books he gathered mainly concerned pastoral, moral and
ascetical theology, liturgy, homilies and canon law. The collection also
comprised historical, philosophical, technical and naturalistic writings.
394
Summary
The donor, who later became a Włocławek suffragan, had antique books
from the 16th century and the most current ones from the 19th century.
They were written in various languages: French, German, Russian, Latin
and Polish. In general, the collection was very valuable.
Twin brothers Stanisław and Zenon Chodyński, professors of
Włocławek s seminary, also gave a part of their books to the library.
In 1877 and in 1881 they joined the group of the canons of the local chap-
ter. Their collection included over 4 thousand volumes mainly on the
Polish and the world history, law, the history of literature and preach-
ing. They intensively bought encyclopedias, dictionaries and biographies.
The chapter library in Włocławek received only few positions marked by
a seal Ks. Chodyński . Most of the collection was given to the local semi-
nar library.
Before World War I began the library got books from Jan Śliwiński,
Franciszek Stopierzyński and Leon Michalski. Unfortunately the books
preserved in Włocławek s chapter lack any traces of their owners and it is
hard to say which writings were given to the capitular library.
Thanks to Stanisław Chodyński the library received chosen volumes
from closed monasteries. Originally, the books were to be given to the
library of the diocese seminary. Chodyński, who was the keeper of two
libraries, the seminar and the capitular one, selected manuscripts, incun-
abula and printed writings from the 16th century and gave them to the
chapter. It was probably a result of the idea to create a historical collection
out of the books owned by prelates and canons. Chodyński enlarged the
stock by including into it certain books from the libraries of Bemardines
(from Koło, Kalisz, Warta, Kazimierz Biskupi, Łowicz, Przyrów, Paradyż,
Złoczewo and the residency near Bodzentyn), the Order of the Reformati
(from Lutomirsk, Kalisz, Konin and Chocz), the Black Friars from Brześć
Kujawski, Cistercians from Ląd and Piarists from Piotrków Trybunalski.
Until the first half of the 19th century librarians were chosen annually
during January or August meetings of the chapter. The position of the
keeper was not a desired one. It required the keeper to be present at all
sittings, to constantly control the order in the library stock and to lend
books to outside readers. Only few looked after the library for a few years
in a row. Stanisław Chodyński was the one who followed canon Karol
Zieliński in taking care of the stock. He continued his work until World
War I began. The period he looked after the library was also an attempt to

revive it and give it a monumental and historic character. In order to pre-
serve information on the capitular stock, Chodyński made two records:
one of the manuscripts and the other of the incanabula and the prints
written until 1550. He did not restrict his work to the assignments he re-
ceived but he was often their initiator. He obliged himself to take care of
the task of renovating the capitular rooms and he also had certain books
repaired in bindery. Moreover, he was the author of the first work de-
scribing the history of the capitular library.
In the 19th century there was another general renovation of the capitu-
lar rooms. In 1853 the chapter received funds from the state authorities.
Thanks to the money it was possible to finish the work within two years.
The books were placed again in bookcases, this time in new glazed oak
ones. This task was seen to by the secretary of the chapter, Karol Zielinski.
At the end of the 20th century, due to the intended general renovation of
the cathedral thanks to which the building was to regain its Gothic style,
the library was transferred to the seminary. During the renovation in 1892
and 1893 a few new chambers were built above the chapter-house and
above two chapels, giving additional space for the books and archives of
the chapter. The stock was removed from the seminar and carried into the
new chambers as late as the end of the century. Thanks to a record made
in the seminary by an alumnus Wacław Piotrowski (died in 1948) it is
now known that in 18901121 books were temporarily stored there.
During the period between the World Wars the capitular stock was
taken care of by people who had a significant role in the history of the
Włocławek diocese. Priest Rudolf Filipski, the editor of Kronika Diececji
Kujawsko-Kaliskiej , was one of them. He became the member of the
chapter in 1918. Another one was priest Michał Morawski, the author of
a Włocławek monograph. None of them, however, left any sign of their
work in the library, which was at that time rarely visited. Priest Stanisław
Maternowski was the librarian and the archivist since 1927 until 1939.
During the time he was the keeper the library was visited by Kazimierz
Piekarski who undertook the task of registering incanabula and the 16th
century printed materials. In 1935 and 1936 he made similar registries
of the stock gathered by the Order of Reformaţi and the seminar library.
The capitular record included 444 positions (single printed material
and blocks) among these there were 355 descriptions of incanabula and
300 printed materials from the 16th century.
396
Summary
Until 1942 the stock gathered over the centuries was located in the
four new rooms of the chapter-house. The third chamber housed older
and more recent printed materials. The second chamber comprised book-
cases with the remaining books. Archives and capitular manuscripts were
stored in yet another chamber. During World War II the cathedral was
occupied by Germans who changed it into a warehouse.
In the summer of 1942 Germans started carrying Włocławek s stock,
including a part of the capitular library, to Poznań. Then the stock found
its place in Bytyń and Ceradz Kościelny. In the summer of 1945 the books
returned to Włocławek without any major loses. However it was the end
of the library because the books did not return to their original place.
The chapter agreed, probably in 1950, to give them to the seminar li-
brary.
Priest Jan Adamecki was the seminar librarian who took over the
capitular stock. He agreed to fulfill the condition of the members of the
chapter that the books should form a separate collection. Unfortunately
his successor priest Zygmunt Tyburski included manuscripts, old printed
materials and the printed materials from the 19th century into the seminar
stock.
In the 90s of the 20th century and in 2006 the capitular province organ-
ized a search in the Włocławek library. First, 319 positions were found
which had a capitular note from 1727/1728 and earlier ones. During the
second search the number doubled. Nowadays the stock of the semi-
nar library contains 399 manuscripts and about 700 printed materials.
The stock which is stored there is still an inexhaustible source of research
on old books.
