Résumé
The book describes various types of robber knights in the mediaeval history of the
Lands of the Bohemian Crown, and some related neighbouring territories, with the
emphasis on the turbulent period from the 14th to the 16th century. About
150
historic
persons are mentioned, with the more illustrious ones given a chapter of their own. The
numerous robber knights featured in the folklore are not included in this compilation,
since it deals with true historical events only.
Besides the robber knights, the Czech history records also feature the term of
zemský škůdce ,
i.e. the pest of the land . A robber knight was either a member of the
higher nobility or gentry, engaging in robbing usually in the form of ambushing travelling
merchants, or taking part in predatory expeditions, pillaging, plundering, larceny, etc.
A nobleman earning the status of an enemy of the country, i.e. a territorial pest, was
the one who violated the (provincial or territorial) peace
-
landfrýd
(from the German
word
Landfriede , in
Latin constitutio pacis ), declared by the regional governing
body, or sometimes by the sovereign of the country. A robber knight or baron was
sometimes also called
opovědník
(an avenger knight), which implied he publicly declared
his hostility or revenge related to some unresolved matter, usually launching a minor
private war against a particular person(s), a town, towns, etc. A certain form of robbery
was called
záškodnictví
-
marauding. The golden times of marauders were the so
called Margrave s Wars in Moravia and in South Bohemia during the reign of King
Wenceslaus IV, in the absence of strong central kingship. Supporters of the younger
Margrave
Prokop
were fighting the supporters of Margrave
Jošt
and also against the
odious Rosenberg family. Among fighting supporters of Margrave
Jošt
was also young
Jan Žižka
of
Trocnov
(later to become a famous Czech warlord and Hussite leader). He
was never a robber knight though, and he never kept his own group of fighters or
robbers.
The next kind of robber knights were members of the resistance against the king,
namely during the reign of King John the Blind
(Jan Lucemburský),
then during the
reign of King Wenceslaus IV. Avenger knights were a specific case, in search to have
their revenge on injustice (be it either proven or alleged) inflicted either to them or
(typically) to their father or brother. The usual targets were travelling merchants, their
political enemies and beginning from the 15th century also religious enemies. Defenceless
country people suffered always in wake of any such struggle or raids, whatever the
motives might have been.
- 225 -
Robber knights and barons kept their own fighting and robbing groups. Certain
groups were basically only of the robbing type. Then we recognize fighting groups
belonging to individual noblemen, and also crews serving on a certain castle or a
fortified manor. Some of the Hussites also had the experience of membership in a
fighting or robbery group prior to the Hussite Wars, or following the Battle of
Lipany
(1434),
which virtually ended the Hussite Wars. The number of members of various
fighting or robbery groups ranged from very small to quite formidable. Successful main
road robbery required at least a dozen of armed men, however some fighting groups
counted as many as several dozens of men. Smil of
Landštejn
and
Moravany
was
planning a (not realized) raid to Upper Hungary (the northern part of the Kingdom of
Hungary, currently mostly Slovakia) with the attendance of
900
riders. Fighting groups
relied on help of many other people such as cooperating innkeepers, scouts and traffickers
of stolen goods.
Activities of robber knights and barons were very diverse. The most usual activities
included raids on the mediaeval trade routes and other pathways. Besides the gained
goods there were also prisoners who were taken to be later exchanged for high ransom.
Robbery raids executed behind the border also presented profitable opportunities,
especially to Upper Hungary and to Silesia; from the north of Bohemia to Upper
Lusatia and to Saxony. Participants seized cattle or stole barrels with wine, a very
popular form of theft. Marauding activities included arson, conquering and destroying
fortified sites, taking subjects, as well as kidnapping wealthy or high-born persons.
Cases of forgery are also documented.
When a robber knight was captured, he faced the highest (i.e. death) sentence and
his property was confiscated. A minor nobleman, unimportant
Jan Žamberský
of
Žamberk,
was quartered by the executioner. Many were never punished, and gained pardon from
the sovereign. Sometimes, e.g. the nobleman
Jiřík Kopidlanský,
they were backed, even
aided by powerful supporters. Some managed to live long and prosper and even have
decent descendants.
Let s recall the most important ones.
Brothers
Jindřich, Kryštof, Jan
and
Volf
of
Gutštejn
were sons of
Burian
II of
Gutštejn.
His sons, with exception of
Jetřich,
were
troublemakers, breakers of peace and robber knights. They lived in the beginning of the
16th century, during the reign of King Vladislaus II
Jagiellon.
Being four brothers
breaking the law by robbery and disorderly conduct, they were without an equal among
the Czech nobility of that time.
Jindřich
of
Gutštejn,
a well-known troublemaker and avenger knight, got ill-famous
by imprisonment of brothers Jan and
Bohuslav
of
Švamberk
on his property,
Schwarzenburg Castle in Germany. For his wrathful deeds and failure to appear at the
land court,
Kryštof
of
Gutštejn
was stripped of his honour, life and property, but
managed in time to surrender to the king, which saved him. The rudest of brothers was
Jan of
Gutštejn
who assembled a host of trained robbers, and ordered them to beat and
rob valets of the territorial court.
Volf,
the youngest, participated in burning of the
town of
Pilsen
(West Bohemia) in
1507.
- 226 -
Jiřík Kopidlanský
of
Kopidlno
was by far the most famous territorial pest. Due to the ill-thought execution of his
brother Jan in
1506,
he declared war on the Towns of Prague, and became a terror to
the bourgeoisie. His host amassed three hundred members of cavalry, one hundred
members of infantry, and his own master executioner. He was backed by the Czech
nobility and King Vladislaus II the
Jagiellon.
His further deeds are unclear. In fear of
revenge he probably left the country and made his living as a mercenary in services of
the Venetian Republic.
Jan Sokol
of Lamberk
was often considered a robber knight. Today he is more regarded as a commander
of the European renown, on the winning side in the well-known Battle of
Grunwald
(1410)
against the Teutonic Order. Together with
Hynek Suchý Čert
of
Kunštát
he
fought in the services of Margrave
Prokop,
leading a feud against the Rosenberg family
(the most significant and influential noble family in South Bohemia). Further, he
participated in the successful defence of the town of
Znojmo
in
1404
against the army
of King
Sigismund
of Luxemburg. The end of his life is not clear, it has been hinted he
was poisoned, or partially poisoned, at a feast at the Polish king s court, by some
jealous Polish noblemen competing with him for the favour of the king. His son was the
Hussite Commander
Mikuláš Sokol
of Lamberk.
Friduš
of Linava
came from a noble Silesian family, who had already taken to robbery before. He
participated in the fight against King of Bohemia, John the Blind
(Jan Lucemburský).
The resistance against King John the Blind ended in
1312
by siege of
Račice
Castle,
Friduš
s
last castle, which had been deemed to be nearly impregnable. King John, who
was heading the siege in person, called the miners, who came to undermine the castle
walls, thus destroying them. Hence
Friduš
opted to surrender. His property was
confiscated by the king,
Friduš
himself was eventually pardoned, and entered the
service of the king. In
1315
he is confirmed to hold in pledge the farm of
Čelechovice
in Hanakia
(Haná).
Mikuláš
of
Potštejn
also lived during the reign of King John the Blind. His lot was determined by the
murder of his father Pro
cek,
and his revenge after he found out that he was not able
to call on the justice. Subsequently he turned
Potštejn
Castle and his other minor
castles and fortified manor houses into renowned places of the robber knight. They
were conquered by Margrave Charles (King John s oldest son, the future Holy Roman
Emperor Charles IV) as a warning, but
Mikuláš
did not surrender. In
1338
Potštejn
Castle was besieged and after
8
weeks it was nearly conquered. The proud lord found
his death with the rest of the defenders in the undermined, slumped castle tower,
rather than to face surrender.
- 227 -
Zikmund Rachna
of
Rychnov
lived in the first half of the
15Љ
century. He strove to seize a part of the inheritance
after the deceased lord,
Puta
of
Častolovice.
To this end he kidnapped one of Puta s
daughters, hoping to marry her by force. He probably did not expect he would be
immediately relentlessly pursued by the girl s stepfather, powerful
Hynek Krušina
of
Lichtenburk. Without the girl already, he ran from Neuhaus Castle in Silesia to a more
faraway
Kaltenštejn
Castle. However the castle was too large for his host to defend. He
was captured by the Bishop s retainers, cruelly tortured and executed.
Mikeš Pancíř
of Smojno
is known in connection with
Sloup
Castle, a picturesque rock castle in North Bohemia.
A member of the Smojno family, his family became poor in time. At the beginning of
his career he was appointed
Burgrave
at Frenevald Castle, in the employ of the
Berka
of
Dube
family. In the Vartenberk Wars in the
40
s
of the 15th century he gained
renown as a robber and inflicted terror unto the
Lusatian
towns and the town of Zitava
(today Zittau, Germany). In the following years he participated in raids into neighbouring
Saxony. He died after
1455,
his sons inherited
Sloup
Castle and domain.
Pankrác
of
Svatý Mikuláš
is remembered as a Hungarian Magnate and warlord who lived in the
15*
century.
He began his rise to fame as a poor member of the
Liptov
lower nobility in service of
the Empress Barbara of
Culi (Celje).
He distinguished himself in wars against the
Hussites and later on against the Turks. Subsequently he became a feared robber
knight who was active both in Moravia and Austria. His property lied not only in
Slovakia but also in Moravia, where he owned Svetlov,
Brůmov, Pulčín
and
Sehradice
Castle, respectively. For Moravian authorities he was quite a handful to deal with.
Markvart
of Vartenberk
was the sovereign at
Žleby, Rohozec
and
Zbiroh
Castle during the reign of the weak
King Wenceslaus IV. A member of the distinguished family, Lords of Vartenberk, he
found himself in a property feud with the
Lusatian
towns, and turned to robbery, i.e.
ambushing
Lusatian
merchants and taking their goods. During the changed political
situation, the king withdrew his support of
Markvart
and in
1390
he besieged
Markvarťs
three castles, successfully conquering them.
Markvarťs
property was confiscated,
Markvart
himself died soon after he was released from the prison.
Jan Kolda of
Žampach
was initially a Hussite Commander, then he was proclaimed a pest of the land. Last
of all he became a condotierre. His main residence was
Náchod
Castle in East Bohemia
and
Homole
Castle in
Kłodzko
(today Poland). His main enemies were the Silesians. He
spent most of his life fighting on the side of the Hussites, later on he left the country
and fought on the Polish side against knights of the Teutonic Order. He supported the
Polish candidate to become the next Czech king, which shook his position and he
earned the animosity of the other candidate, the future King George of
Poděbrady.
He
spent his old age in poverty.
