adam_text | Summary
The liberation of Czechoslovakia in
1945
brought a revival of philosophical life at
universities and flourishing philosophical publication. Interestingly, the character of
our philosophy of the era was shaped not only by discussions and polemics in purely
philosophical areas, but also the wider social, cultural and political issues of the day.
Focus has also been put on the institutional basis of philosophical work (departments
of philosophy at colleges, Union of Philosophy), changes in the contents of journals
and mainly philosophical works that concentrated on the nature and content of the
changes in progress in 1945-1948.
The analyze of the processes in which the plurality of philosophical positions was
gradually forced out by the rise of Marxist ideas and philosophy and other humani¬
ties were driven out by mechanisms of biased ideology. The project will also focus on
the final stages of the era, the events after February
1948,
political interference against
non-communist thinkers, universities and publishing institutions.
Czech philosophical life after the liberation of the country was crucially influenced
by the reconstruction of institutions. First, it was the re-opening of Charles University
in Prague and
Masaryk
University in Brno, and the establishment of
Palacký
Univer¬
sity in
Olomouc
in
1946.
Their faculties of arts included departments of philosophy
covering the contents of the curricula of philosophy programs.
Memoirs of the attendants of the political events and academic discussions of the
era bring testimony to the exciting time and fate of the institutions and scholars.
Journals that focused on philosophy included
Česká mysl
(Czech Mind),
Filosofická
revue (Philosophical Review),
Křesťanská
revue (Christian Review),
Kritický měsíčník
(Criti¬
cal Monthly) etc.
After
1945,
Czech philosophy and culture were first introduced to existentialism.
First it was the original works of French existentialists (Sartre, Camus, Marcel), later
by means of the journal Letters
(1947)
and
Václav Černý
{Thefirst book on existentialism,
T948). The acceptance of existentialism in Czech context was not univocal. Besides
factual analyses (J.
Patočka, V. Navrátil,
V.
T.
Miškovská),
existentialism met with
criticism and rejection mainly from Marxists and Catholic scholars for its rational
weakness, pessimism, helplessness and intellectual decline.
The post-war years were a period of the rise of Marxism in social, cultural and
political life. The most prominent representative of the philosophy
oï
Marxism-Le¬
ninism in Czechoslovakia in
1945-1948
was
Arnošt
Kolman.
The authors describes the way that the French Thomist Jacques Maritain s work
spread to Czech and Slovak philosophy. The most prominent proponents of his work
were Christian philosophers, neo-Thomists, who published his substantial works as
well as minor social, political and art-theoretical essays in journals
Na hlubinu, Filosofická
revue and
Akord.
From
1930s
Maritain
encouraged Catholics in his essays to resist totali-
tarian regimes, spread Christian social values and establish a just society
-
Christian
humanism. After
1948
Maritain s voice was silenced for several decades and his work
only returned to Czech culture in
1990s
thanks to the Czech Society of J.
Maritain.
The key figures of Czech aesthetic, literary scientific and philosophical structura¬
lism after WWII were
Jan Mukařovský
and J. L. Fischer.

Return to TGM of
1945-1948
brought a new reading of Masaryks theoreti¬
cal and political legacy. In that social situation, whoat was particularly emphasized
was Masaryks philosophy of democracy and his social philosophy was misinterpred
as socialist with the goal of sustaining and renewing positive values that his work
and politics had been associated with. The after-war period initiated further interest
m
Masaryk
and his conceptions of science, philosophy, sociology, religion, philoso¬
phy of Czech history, philosophy of politics and philosophical
antropology.
Patočka s
conception of human being stems from the integrity of man with nature, history and
culture. It is also essentially related to a metaphysical level, i.e., something transcend¬
ing the reality of this world. Metaphysics, for
Patočka,
is a way of objective compre¬
hension of the world as well as action, humanly free way of life.
Patočka s
formula¬
tions of the problem in
1946
are also inspired by Masaryk s ideas.
Rádl s
work
Útecha z
filosofie
(Consolation from Philosophy), published in
1946,
elicited some notable responses in contemporary Czechoslovakia. In
1947,
several au¬
thors, whom we could call Radl s critics, expressed their views of
Rádi
in the journals
Česká mysl
and
Nová mysl.
They were
Mirko Novák, Ladislav
Rieger, Jan Stern and
Josef
Král.
By contrast, we mention
Jan Patočka
as one of
Rádl s
apologists and ad¬
herents.
Creative personalities fulfill the human nature in unique ways, creative individua¬
lity determines a characteristic relation to the world, creativity and creative work of art
transcends the reality. The question is whether and how the creative artistic personal¬
ity and work of art express the human nature. The inspiration for this work comes
from the ideas of a prominent Czech literary scientists
Jan Mukařovský
and Vaclav
Černý
from the post-war period and the contemporary and later reactions to them.
In the period between 1945-1948, the famous Czech art theoretician
Karel
Teige
further focused on the connection between the imaginative characters of revolution
and artistic creation in order to attain the freedom of individual life and art. The
analysis of his production from 1945-1951 also addresses his work The Phenomeno¬
logy of Art.
The period between
1946
and
1548
brought up the issue of the freedom of art in
Czech philosophy. A number of avant-garde scholars believed that the social changes
after WWII created the conditions for the liberation of man in free society and for
the freedom of art. At the same time, information from Soviet Union stimulated fear
of the infringement of artistic and civil liberties. In
1947,
Czech society celebrated an
anniversary of F. X.
Salda, a
key figure of Czech literature and literary criticism. This
became an opportunity to pause on
Saldas
conception of the freedom of art.
The authors present the attitudes that the left-wing philosopher and sociologist
J. L. Fischer held towards democracy and freedom. Fischer employed the structurally
-functional method in the exposition of the criticized phenomena and in seeking the
ways of overcoming them. As early as
1930s,
he concluded that the crisis of democracy
had deeper causes relating to the general order of European civilization and culture
and to the crisis of values, namely freedom and equality („freedom can only be free¬
dom in order ). The author points out Fischer s pre-war works (The Future of European
Culture,
1927;
The Third Empire,
1932;
The Crisis of Democracy,
1933)
as well as his minor essays
from 1945-1946, in which he reflected the new political arrangements in Czechoslova¬
kia.
