SUMMARY
SUMMARY
Pottery from early collections of the National Museum
In memory of the French archaeologist Joseph Déchelette.
The Stradonice oppidum in central Bohemia still belongs
among the key sites of the La Tène period not only in the Czech
context, despite the many modem investigations of Czech and
European oppida and central places. Although European ar-
chaeology acquainted itself with the astonishing wealth of finds
from Stradonice already at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries,
they were last published by J. L. Pic in 1903. In spite of the
recent complex publication of the find corpus and documen-
tation of the archaeological excavation lead at Stradonice by
A. Stocky in 1929 (Venclová - Valentová 2012), most of the
older finds have not been scientifically evaluated. The present
publication of the pottery from Stradonice, coming partly from
the excavations by J. L. Pic in 1894 and 1902 and from older
activities at the oppidum, but mainly of the pottery acquired
through purchase of the Berger collection, aims to at least par-
tially redress this situation.
The scientific evaluation of old pottery collections unfortu-
nately suffers from limitations by all the problems often en-
countered at old museum collections in general: unknown find
context, missing documentation makes it impossible to con-
sider stratigraphy, contamination of the assemblage by other
non-Stradonice components cannot be excluded. The assem-
blage arose out of the perspective of collector’s attractiveness
֊ it is a selection that deforms the original reality. Its statistical
evaluation as a self-contained assemblage is impossible since
it was created through special-purpose selection of the original
reality, through mixture of variable composition from varied
sources. Therefore, we only state the number of individuals
from each group that was evaluated. Pottery analysis, although
indispensable for the future final assessment of the site’s impor-
tance, suffered from very low representativeness of the assem-
blage. The collection ֊ with exceptions ֊ does not include com-
plete shape spectra of the particular groups nor does it reflect
the usual structure of pottery assemblages from settlements; its
structure is not comparable with data from other sites. Upon
its creation, fine pottery and especially painted pottery was
given absolute priority; coarse pottery together with graphite,
storage and technical pottery constitute only one fourth of the
assemblage. Some special categories of pottery (lids, covers,
colanders) are well represented precisely due to their conspic-
uousness from the collector’s perspective; their accumulation
in the assemblage has been used for a more detailed analysis.
Separation of the Kobyly group pottery was also important,
but this requires independent attention. The painted pottery
assemblage from the Wien collection was also processed in
full. The use of the central Bohemian classification typology
as developed by N. Venclová (Venclová 1998) also represented
certain - although envisaged ֊ problem at pottery analysis. The
non-standard nature of the assemblage was such that categori-
zation of some pieces according to this typological classifica-
tion was problematic. This is partly due also to certain exclu-
siveness of the social-economic status of the oppida among the
lowland settlement units. For this reason, a catalogue using the
traditional verbal description alongside reference to the clas-
sification typology accompanies the text, a simple descriptive
system respecting the decoration particularities was created for
the sake of analysis of the hundreds of fragments of painted pot-
tery. The material published may help to study pottery invento-
ry from other oppida and in some cases it may inspire a more
thorough research interest in certain La Tene pottery category
in the regional, Czech and European context.
1. Sources and documentation
1.1 J. L. Pic and J. Déchelette - “founders” of the Stra-
donice oppidum. Owing to the prompt publishing of the cur-
rent information about the oppidum abroad and thanks to the
immediate, slightly modified translation of Pic’s publication by
the renowned French archaeologist J. Déchelette, Stradonice
entered the context of the most outstanding European oppida
then known. Déchelette’s interest in the Stradonice oppidum
resulted in intense contact with J. L. Pic. His strong interest
in the Stradonice oppidum allowed J. Déchelette to formulate
his own propositions and hypotheses about its importance and
chronological setting.
1.2 Field research at the oppidum in the 19th and early
20th century. The first archaeologist to visit the site was Ludvik
Snajdr in April 1879. Regular systematic excavation at Stra-
donice, initiated in 1894 by J. L. Pic, did not take long to detect
settlement evidence. In spite of an equally successful second
field season in 1902 which documented settlement features
and a stone wall, J. L. Pic did not continue the excavation. He
apparently drew up no documentation. Albin Stocky accom-
plished a single field season of his originally long-term research
plan at Stradonice in 1929.
2. Critique of sources
2.1 Private collector’s activities

SUMMARY
chased the collection from Berger’s heirs and deposited it in the
National Museum as the so-called land deposit; later it became
pan of the Museum’s holdings. The original inventory of Berg-
er’s Stradonice collection lists altogether 14 197 items, a more
detailed list compiled by Albín Stocký and Václav Landa in
1913 included more than 22 thousands items.
Smaller private collections. The National Museum holds
only smaller private collections comprising tens of items.
2.2 Stradonice in the earliest collections of the National
Museum. The first finds from the Stradonice oppidum were re-
corded in years 1867 ֊ 1889. Museum’s acquisitions list larger
assemblages of sherds and two whole vessels as early as 1878.
Leading figures of the Czech archaeology of that time, František
Beneš and Josef Smolik, acquired them. The newly established
Department of Prehistory, led by J. L. Pic as the custodian since
1893, faced the task of systematic investigation of the oppidum.
2.3 Stradonice in Czech museums. Since the very first
finds at the oppidum, their acquisition for private and museum
collections became a matter of prestige, as in some cases cor-
roborated by the dates of their acquisition.
2.4 Stradonice in museum collections abroad. The finds
from Stradonice, originally in private collections, reached some
important European museums that purchased them feverishly
for their collections fearing the early exhaustion of their source.
3. Pottery
3.1 Fine pottery
3.1.1 Pottery with burnished decoration. This group is
represented by 48 vessel parts and 5 whole vessels. The group
is characterised by carefully burnished surface of the vessels
and their wheel-turned production from fine material. Minor
variations in material are exceptional. When vessel shape can
be determined, these are goblets and bowls, among documented
vessel shapes belong also bottle-shaped and barrel-shaped pots.
Burnished decoration appeared sporadically also on lids and on
a storage vessel with narrow neck, made of coarse material.
3.1.2 Pottery with hairline combing. The collection holds
176 pieces bearing this decoration type, and four complete
vessels. This pottery represents a specific group that has to be
differentiated from rough combing or individual incisions; iso-
lated specimens stand in between the two groups. This fine thin-
walled pottery was produced in the form of table or drinking
service which determines also its shape variability; the material
is consistently non-graphite. Graphite coating of the whole ves-
sel surface or its part was detected in some cases. The group is
formally uniform over a broader territory and is typical mainly
for Bavaria and the Danubian region. Hairline combing at Stra-
donice is documented since the 2n 1 settlement horizon as de-
fined by A. Rybová and P. Drda, crossbred and latticed motives
since the 4!h horizon, i.e. around the mid-1st century BC; data
from Závist confirm the LT D1 stage.
3.1.3 Pottery with morphologic-decorative elements. Al-
together 79 pottery fragments where this decoration type was
used as basic, i.e. in absence of other decoration type, and one
vessel bearing this decoration were included in this group.
The group includes also 22 fragments with burnished decora-
tion that uses these elements regularly to delimit the burnished
bands, and 13 fragments with hairline combing decoration that
is also complementary. Sporadically, this decoration combines
with stamping and four times with painted decoration. Comple-
mentation of the paint by a relief rib is occurs very sporadical-
ly. Fine pottery with morphologic-decorative elements is rather
monotonous in terms of surface treatment and material, but the
shapes represented are diverse. Vessel surface is always mark-
edly burnished to polished, carefully elaborated - this relates to
the fine, floated fabric used and wheel-turned production. The
group consists of pots of different shapes, a fragment of a bar-
rel-shaped pot with seven ribs preserved, or a similarly shaped
fragment with three ribs, distinctively represent the group, a rim
fragment of a situla (var. 310) with two sharp ribs at shoulder is
a conspicuous shape. Bowls var. 722 and 733 occur. Numerous
wide lugs appear at shoulders of infrequent goblet-like vessels.
Most fragments in this group come from bottles.
3.1.4 Stamped pottery. It represents a rare phenomenon in
the late La Tene period not only locally, but also in the sur-
rounding areas. The collection holds three sherds: fragment of
a fine vessel with one “eye” stamp of concentric circles pre-
served under a relief rib at the neck; bottom and wall fragment
of a fine vessel with hairline combing which terminates above
the bottom in a row of tiny stamps executed by means of a small
tube; and a fragment of a shoulder of a light vessel from float-
ed material also with concentric circles. Rectangle-stamping is
shown on the surface of a vessel densely covered with deep-
ly imprinted “trabecula” in rows, reminiscent of the “diamond
cut”; less dense rectangular stamping covers the surface of
a graphite vessel of markedly silver colour. The use of rectan-
gular stamping is rare and attests for inter-regional influences,
since it abounds in assemblages to the south-west of the Czech
basin.
3.1.5 Painted pottery. Due to substantial shape and dec-
oration uniformity of the painted ware at broad territories in-
cluding Bohemia, only pottery decorated by the so-called batik
technique, which distinguishes it from most other painted ware,
was selected for analysis. Ch. G. Cumberpatch considers the
decoration to be made by means of wax, and within our territo-
ry he considers it characteristic for central Bohemia. It was used
mainly for creation of singular motives within the painted dec-
oration, which was composed in an entirely different non-geo-
metric style - not in the horizontally conceived segmentation,
but in dots placed unevenly on the surface. White, rarely also
red dots on grey to black background are - in Bohemia - typical
exclusively for Stradonice. There are 21 specimen preserved in
the collection, the collection in Wien includes three more. This
motif is the second most frequent after the lattice. It does not
combine with other motives, although such cases are known
from abroad. Stradonice are so far the sole source of paint-
ed dots on pottery, except for a single sherd found at Zavist.
The painted dots have not been documented at Stare Hradisko
or other sites in Moravia. It is therefore possible to consider
virtually zero spread and local production. There are two dis-
tinctive centres in the adjacent areas: the Manching oppidum
in Bavaria, and Basel in today’s Switzerland. The dots motif
can therefore represent a possible hint to identify production or
at least consumption centres in certain areas. Key to the local

dating of the painted pottery, including the sherd with dots, is
a find from the lower Zavist oppidum. belonging to a relatively
late time horizon - most likely the course of the fourth decade
BC. Although La Tene painted pottery spread over vast regions
of western and central Europe, the batik technique group with
dot motif is locally very restricted. Apart from this motif, the
semi-globular bowls “bol Roanne with incised wavy lines
were studied in detail and they also seem to be a characteristic
Stradonice product.
3.1.5.2 Painted pottery from the Wien collection of Stra-
donice artefacts. The majority of the earliest pottery finds
from the oppidum is deposited in the Naturhistorisches Mu-
seum Wien. They date back to two collector’s assemblages.
The Wien Museum acquired the “Collection Grosse” in 1882,
and purchased “Collection Franz von Hochstetter” already in
1878. They both contain not insignificant number (51 pieces)
of painted pottery sherds including ones with the characteristic
Stradonice dots.
3.1.6 Fine undecorated pottery
Altogether 62 vessel parts with significant pottery attributes
and 19 whole vessels were analysed. Barrel-shaped pots, pro-
filed bowls var. 720 and 730, but also smaller bowls with in-
flaring rim are characteristic for this group. Bottle-shaped indi-
viduals feature a rib at the neck or at the neck ֊ shoulder joint
and therefore fall into the group with morphologic-decorative
elements. Simple pots with highly bulging walls var. 213 and
pots with indented very short neck var. 233 belong here as well.
3.2 Coarse pottery. It is represented mainly by the charac-
teristic central Bohemian (or eastern Bohemian) pottery with
grating at the bulge, namely pots and bowls, and partly also
by pottery with impressed decoration and combed or individual
lines, or exceptionally by pottery with morphologic-decorative
elements. Vessels without grating or decoration belong into this
group as well. Coarse pottery shows relative variability in terms
of fabric, but pottery made from sandy material prevails. Coars-
er fabric with macroscopically significant admixture of temper
or gravel appears sporadically.
3.2.1 Pottery with grating. This uniform central / eastern
Bohemian pottery group is represented almost exclusively by
pots and bowls with inflaring rim. Altogether 77 vessel units
and eleven whole vessels were analysed.
3.2.2 Pottery with impressed decoration. Within the cat-
egory of coarse pottery, this group involves decoration by en-
graving or rough combing. Sherds belong to pot-shaped, often
massive shapes. Altogether 39 pottery fragments, one incom-
plete and one whole vessel were analysed. Pot with slightly in-
flected neck (var. 221), and to lesser extent pot-shaped vessel
with slightly bulged walls (var. 212) appear the most frequently.
Most vessels were made from sandy fabric, in one case with
admixture of fine mica; only four fragments were made from
material visually classifiable as markedly coarse; wheel-finish-
ing prevailed.
3.2.3 Pottery with morphologic-decorative elements. Ves-
sels with ribs and lugs applied to the outside surface, which
apart from the decorative effect form part of the vessel’s tecton-
ics, fall into this group. This group is however represented by
sporadic pieces only, since its core is among fine pottery.
3.2.4 Coarse undecorated pottery. Altogether 62 ves-
sel parts and 18 whole vessels were analysed. This group in-
cludes exclusively pots and bowls, almost evenly represented,
although bowl-shaped vessels slightly prevail.
3.3 Graphite and storage pottery. Pottery made from cla -
ish material with admixture of graphite or graphite particles
belong into this group. For the purpose of this text, storage pot-
tery is included into this group, since most of it in the collec-
tion is made from graphite fabric. Altogether 35 graphite v es-
sel parts, ten whole graphite vessels, 11 rim sherds of graphite
storage vessels, and 8 fragments of storage vessels from coarse
non-graphite material were analysed. Pot with thickened round-
ed rim, vertically combed walls and frequent cock-tread signs
at the bottom, most often simple, with slightly inflected neck
or indented and slightly inflected neck is the typical represen-
tative of the group. There are two cases of lids from graphite
fabric, and two colanders, a miniature vessel - a bowl which
could have served also as children’s toy ֊ is a specific case.
Wall surface of a vessel with high content of graphite and of
conspicuous silver colour is densely covered with rectangular
stamp. The use of rectangular stamp is rare and the sherd proba-
bly suggests interregional relations with areas to the south-west
of the Czech basin. Graphite technical pottery is represented by
discs with drilled hole; the discs were cut off sherds. Graphite
is absent from the group of fine pottery with hairline comb-
ing. a massive barrel-shaped pot with high content of graphite
bears decoration of one horizontal line made by means of trac-
ing wheel above the bottom, another such line circumscribes
the vessel a little higher. Decoration by tracing wheel is rare
also at other late La Tene sites, probably this is also an evi-
dence of interregional contact with areas to the south-west of
the Czech basin. Storage vessels. This group includes large and
massive pot-shaped vessels with average rim diameter of 40 -
50 cm (most often 40 and 48 cm). They often copy shapes of
pots with inflected and indented neck and their classification
among pots is purely functional. Altogether 19 fragments, out
of which most fall at the same time in the category of graphite
pottery, were analysed; sandy and coarse fabric is represented
very weakly. Graphite storage vessels have their walls covered
with vertical combing (the same as graphite pots) and they
without exception feature a relief rib. Non graphite storage ves-
sels have no rib. a massive fragment of an ochre storage vessel
from coarse material, the surface of which stains, wheel-turned
and decorated with a rough incised lattice, is apparently of dif-
ferent provenience.
3.4 Signs at vessel bottoms. They belonged almost exclu-
sively to the “cock-tread” type which appeared at graphite ves-
sels only and for which it is characteristic, a bottom fragment of
a large graphite vessel shows this sign in an indication of a cir-
cle. The assemblage includes identical “cock-tread” signs of the
Kappel la type, and one sign of Kappel lc/Zeidler C3 type with
the main line bent. The recent study by Zeidler brought in a new
view - his explanation of the signs as alphabetic signs of the
vessels’ owners seems to be probable. Apart from these, there
is one incidence of parallel lines, and on incidence of multiple
concurrent incised lines.
3.5 Special pottery shapes. Special shapes include lids, col-
anders and infrequent vessels with handles. Their abundance
and variability in the collection enable closer analysis of these
categories, a loose set of 125 pottery lids, including eight corn-

SUMMARY
piete ones, allowed establishing of certain typology relating to
analogous shapes in nearby Europe. The characteristic Stradon-
íce lid of type 1, decorated by fine combing and with a disc-
shaped handle, dates after year 50 BC and corresponds to the
western group concentrated at the upper Danube and the Salz-
burg basin. The Stradonice corpus of almost fifty fragments of
v essels with perforations - colanders (including four complete
ones) enables further classification. The whole assemblage can
he divided in pottery for food and drink processing (group i and
11 ֊ colanders), and technical pottery (group 111 - lids) which
may be described also as colanders but is functionally different.
Vessels with handles are documented by seven rim sherds of
bowls with vertical handles either formed directly from the rim
and with the opening punched through, or stick to the rim. They
are mostly made from sandy material which does not differ
from the standard of the common La Téne pottery from central
Bohemia, a massive circular handle, heavily flattened at sides
and with a small, additionally drilled hole that may have served
for rope insertion at transport, does not possess any analogies.
4.0 Technical pottery. Twelve discs cut off vessel sherds
are deposited in the collection, a group of covers, consisting of
perforated pottery of simple non-segmented shapes, with holes
in part or the whole of the wall, and a typical large circular
opening’ in the bottom, executed always before firing, belong
into this group. The hole was meant to drive away the vapour
or heat, but above all to regulate the intake of oxygen and the
flames. There are three definite specimen, one of which gives
testimony of the effect of heat does to its surface.
5.0 The Kobyly-group pottery. Several fragments, con-
spicuously different from other pottery production, represent
bowls with bent wall decorated by very fine hairline combing
in horizontal wavy lines and marked stamps at the outside.
They are made from fine material and wheel-turned. By their
complex fine decoration and distinctive shape they represent
a typical element of the La Téne part of the Kobyly group in-
ventory. a bowl with fine wavy lines and bent wall was found
also at the České Lhotice oppidum and similar bowls appear in
the late horizon in Msecké Żehrovice. Identically shaped bowls
are generally a characteristic shape of pottery in LT C2-D stage.
Chronologically, this group belongs to LT-D1, approximate-
ly to the decades around year 100 BC. The La Tène Kobyły
group pottery shapes at Stradonice are not an entirely new find-
ing ֊ already J. Bren pointed out the striking similarity of some
vessel shapes from the Trt sov oppidum and the Kobyły group
pottery, and he considered possible the infiltration of the latter.
More recently, the Kobyły group component, together with the
Przeworsk group, were mentioned in relation to the analysis of
the material obtained in the 1980s by A. Rybovâ and P. Drda.
Finds of iron Kobyły group belt hooks in the Stradonice collec-
tion at the Museum should be noted as well.
6.0 Pottery imports (Jan Kysela). Fragment of the Mara-
bini 1 type goblet belongs to the earliest group of thin-walled
pottery, produced probably in southern Etruria or northern La-
tium since the beginning of the 2nd century BC. Production of
this goblet type ends during the 2nd half of the 1st century BC.
In Cosa and at Magdalensberg, the latest finds appear in lay-
ers dated to the years 30-25 BC. There are three amphora rim
fragments among the finds from Stradonice; two of them were
repeatedly published. Two of the fragments can be classified
as mid-Adriatic, i.e. Lamboglia 2 (the Po river valley and Pi-
cenum), one as Tyrrhenian Dressei 1 (Cosa). Dating cannot be
determined more exactly than “turn of the 21 1 century or the 1st
half of the 1st century”. The number of amphora finds at Stra-
donice is minimal, but still quite radically changes the percep-
tion of wine trade in the transalpine Europe. Up to now, it has
been oriented exclusively westwards, perceiving the fragments
from Stradonice as the last elements of a distribution chain
spreading to central Europe from Gallia. The Adriatic origin
of two out of three Stradonice finds contributes an unexpected
constituent part into this rather univocal model.
