SUMMARY
THE OLDEST PARISH REGISTER OF
THE HOLY TRINITY PARISH IN
BROD
The register of baptisms of The Holy Trinity parish in
Brod,
dating from
1701
to
1735
is one of the five oldest registers from
Slavonia
region, and thus a
historical source of great importance. Primarily, it bears witness to the presence of
the Franciscans in the town during the first couple of decades after the liberation
from the Ottoman rule. In addition to that, it is the most abundant preserved histo¬
rical source related to the history of
Brod
and
Brodsko Posavlje
region dating from
the first half of the
1
8th century.
The first half of the
1
8th century saw the beginning of keeping registers of
births, marriages and deaths in the entire
Slavonia.
The oldest
Brod
register provi¬
des us with an insight into the state of register keeping of the period. Its analysis
reveals the poor state of registers in the first half of the 18th century
Slavonia,
such
as entries with omissions, mistakes and chronological discontinuities, their relia¬
bility and completeness depending only on responsibility and awareness of the
parish priests themselves. In this respect, this analysis of the oldest
Brod
register
confirms previous research conducted in
Slavonia
and central Croatia. In the first
place, it confirms that the entire register keeping system of the time had not been
adequately supervised by the Catholic Church while the government authorities
had neither insight nor interest in the registers during that period. The true value of
parish registers was realized by the
Habsburg
crown only in the second half of the

18th century. Maria Theresa
(1740-1780)
and her successor Joseph II
(1780-1790)
included church administration in their reforms. Within the scope of the reforms,
the governmental supervision over the keeping of parish registers was established.
Mistakes, omissions and inconsistencies in the keeping of
Brod
register indicate
the necessity and value of the mentioned Theresian and Josephinian reforms rela¬
ted to church administration.
The pronouncedly poor keeping of parish records in
Slavonia
region at the
beginning of the
1
8th century should be assessed through the prism of general so¬
cial and church conditions. After more than
150
years of Ottoman rule, the church
authorities in
Slavonia
had the task of restoring or, more precisely, building their
infrastructure almost anew. The Ottoman rule had a general harmful effect upon
the Catholics in
Slavonia.
Many of them had been murdered, enslaved or simply
fled during those decades. Significant numbers of Catholics converted to Islam,
Orthodox creed or Protestantism. The Catholic Church suffered massive material
damages. Numerous churches and monasteries had been destroyed and Catholics
were allowed to restore them or build new ones only in rare circumstances, most
often with high taxes. The lack of clergy led to the increase of religious ignorance,
resulting in many religious misconceptions and heresies. In this respect, the appe¬
arance of parish registers in the beginning of the 18th century may be considered a
material proof of the Church restoration in
Slavonia,
and their poor keeping during
the first decades reflects the circumstances under which the restoration began.
The conflict over the diocese borders between the Zagreb and
Bosnia-Đako-
vo bishops is another example demonstrating how difficult the religious restoration
in
Slavonia
during those times was. The conflict also reveals the complexity of the
relationship between secular and church authorities of the time. The bishop of Za¬
greb participated in the conflict not only in his own interest, but also as an exponent
of the
Habsburg
crown's interests and one of the most prominent leaders of Croa¬
tian estates. Therefore, the victory of the Zagreb diocese in the conflict regarding
the jurisdiction over
Brodsko
Posavlje region also meant the victory of Croatian
estates' aspiration to unite
Slavonia
with the Kingdom of Croatia.

SUMMARY
Despite all of the above mentioned problems and conflicts, the Franciscans
initiated strong actions in
Brod
immediately after the liberation from Ottoman rule
in
1691,
which resulted in significant achievements during the following decades.
While under the Ottoman rule, the Franciscan province of
Bosna Srebrena
kept a
hospice in
Brod
and the Church of St. Anthony of Padua in the nearby place Pod-
vinje. As early as
1694,
the hospice in
Brod
was granted a status of residence. The
same year,
fra
Augustin
Jaharić,
the then
Brod
parish priest started building of a
wooden church. In
1708
the residence in
Brod
became a monastery and in
1710
the
Franciscans founded the high school of philosophy, the first high school in
Brod.
Less than two decades later, in
1727,
the building of stone church and monastery
began. Those two buildings are among the most important sights of
Slavonski Brod
even today. At the about the same time, the Franciscans started elementary schoo¬
ling in
Brod.
According to some statements, the Franciscan elementary school in
Brod
was already open in
1709.
The witnessing of Baron Franz
Trenek
confirms
that the Franciscans had such school in
1
720ies, although we cannot be sure how
it was organized. No later than 1750ies, the Franciscans had a lower (grammar)
gymnasium in
Brod.
Records dating from
1769
confirm that it grew into a higher,
six-year gymnasium
{humaniora).
All of the above indicates that during the first
half of the
1
8th century, the Franciscan province of
Bosna Srebrena
made
Brod
one
of the most important centers of their work. The successes were of great impor¬
tance, not only for the Franciscan province, but for
Brod
itself. The existence of
elementary school and gymnasium enabled the education of children. Moreover,
it can be asserted that such Franciscan work helped forming the
Brod
bourgeoisie,
which may be considered the origin of numerous famous names of the later deca¬
des, such as Ignjat and
Alojzije Torkvat Brlić,
Tomo
Skalica, Matija
Mesić,
Tomo
Matić,
many prominent
members of
Benčević
family and many others.
The contributions to biographies of prominent Franciscans who resided in
Brod
monastery during the period between
1701
and
1735
reveal other important
facts. First of all, the biographies of those Franciscans reveal that many of them
were highly educated intellectuals who had a significant influence on the state of
consciousness in the town. In an era of predominant illiteracy, such a number of

educated friars who stayed in
Brod
for shorter or longer periods of time certainly
helped the cultural and spiritual progress of the town. Their influence on the
Brod
bourgeoisie can be observed from the fact that during those very decades nume¬
rous young men opted for the friars' vocation. Three names especially stand out
among them
fra Ivan Narančić, fra Jakov Jović and
fra Minaci
Benčević
-
three
men of
Brod
origin who became the abbots of the
Brod
monastery. Besides
Brod
residents, the oldest
Brod
parish register reveals that the town was frequented by
friars from all regions forming the
Bosna Srebrena
province, from the Adriatic Sea
on the south, to
Buda
and Pest on the north. All those Franciscans from
Dalmaţia,
Herzegovina, Bosnia,
Slavonia
and Danube
(Bunjevci)
region gave their contribu¬
tion to
Brod,
enriching the town through their knowledge and skills and providing
the congregation with spiritual strength.
The analysis of the oldest
Brod
parish register provides us with noteworthy
insights into the borders of The Holy Trinity parish. Previous research of the su¬
bject ascertained the major places belonging to
Brod
parish. Numerous entries in
the register confirm that after the Treaty of Passarowitz in
1718,
Brod
Franciscans
restarted the baptizing of
Bosanski Brod
region just
like they did in the period pri¬
or to the Great Turkish War
( 1683-1699).
The mentioned localities and the network
of godparents reveal that
Brod
had a clearly marked gravitation area, bound by Dilj
to the north, stretching westwards to
Kobaš
and Oriovac and eastwards to
Garčin
and Oprisavci. Only the southern border of the gravitation area was obviously po¬
litically conditioned
-
during the period when the state border ran south of
Sava
River, the gravitation area included the
Bosanski Brod
region, but after the Treaty
of Belgrade in
1739
the state border ran along the
Sava
River.
The entries in the oldest
Brod
parish register also help us reconstruct the
immigration directions. According to the register, the largest number of immigrants
in the first decade of the
1
8th century came to
Brod
from Bosnia. Besides the immi¬
gration from Bosnia, an important direction of immigration came from all parts of
Slavonia
and Central Croatia. Some of the records mention the immigration from
Herzegovina and
Dalmaţia,
which can be ascribed to constant emigration from
those areas because of the hunger and general poverty. The immigrants coming

from the above mentioned areas were exclusively of Croatian nationality. The im¬
migration of people emigrating from
Dalmaţia,
Central Croatia and Bosnia and
Herzegovina created firm mutual bonds.
Besides immigration from Croatian regions, the
Brod
parish register also
contains records on immigration from Central Europe. Those were actually the im¬
migrations from the lands constituting The Holy Roman Empire of the German Na¬
tion, primarily from Austrian lands and Czech Republic. Some records show that
many immigrants came from Hungary and even from
Erdély
to some extent. Those
immigration directions reveal the ethnic composition of the immigrants. Among
the strangers, Germans were the most numerous, followed by the Hungarians, the
Czechs and other Central European peoples.
The influence of foreign immigrants was important primarily because of the
economic and cultural development. The German immigrants were mostly experts
of various profiles, civil servants or craftsmen. The register indicates that the fo¬
reign immigrants readily accepted
Brod
as their own home. It is observable from
numerous mixed marriages and mutual godparent relations. That can be considered
the early Croatization of the foreign immigrants.
The total number of Austrian, German and Hungarian immigrants was not
significant in comparison to the number of immigrants from Bosnia and Central
Croatia, but their presence was of great importance since they were predominantly
educated. This is the proof that the vicinity of the border and the presence of the
army had positive sides, because that was the reason why the town attracted many
craftsmen, as well as the doctors, engineers and other professionals.
The arrival of new immigrants to
Brod
was closely related to the forming
of the town elite that emerged during the first half of the
1
8lh century. The
Brod
parish register makes evident that the then town elite consisted of military officers,
civil servants, a small number of free craftsmen as well as the native tradesmen and
craftsmen. They protected their status in the town through intermarrying. Some
examples of religious conversions of Muslims, Orthodox believers or Protestants
or the baptisms of children born out of wedlock show that they took part in such

formal occasions as the representatives of the local community, or as prominent
members of the
Brod
society.
The oldest parish register of The Holy Trinity parish also provides us with
an insight into the name-formula in
Slavonia
prior to the passing of the Josephinian
laws. The anthroponomastic analysis points to the instability of the name-formula
in the
Brod
region at the beginning of the
1
8th century. Some of the nicknames had
stable surname forms that have not changed since the earliest entries in the parish
register until today. The examples of such surnames are
Benčević, Filajdić
and
Tadijanović.
Nevertheless, in most of the cases, the nicknames did not have stable
forms, so they appeared in various variants. Although the previous research main¬
tained that the introduction of the parish registers resulted in the stabilization of the
name-formula, the
Brod
register proves that the keeping of records did not contri¬
bute to the stabilization of the name-formula. This proves that the Catholic Church
did not succeed in enforcing the accurate and orderly keeping of the parish records,
which was very important from the ecclesiastical point of view because of the two
sacraments
-
the baptism and the marriage. Only with the strict supervision and
governmental regulation the parish records became a reliable and detailed source.
The 18th century saw a great demographic, economic and cultural renais¬
sance in
Slavonia.
The analysis of the
Brod
parish register presented in this book
testifies that the
Brodsko Posavlje
region also took part in the changes. It also
proves that the studying of 18lh century parish registers can significantly assist the
researchers in exploring many important historical subjects, such as migrations,
religious conversions, family structures and forming of the town bourgeoisie.
