From Score to Performance by
Maja Metels-
ka-Räsänen
is a study dedicated to the topic of artistic performance of the ti¬
tle opera presented from the conductor s point of view. The author describes
her own conductor s vision of interpretation of this piece, concretized subse¬
quently in the stage performance, the ways of achieving this vision and meth¬
ods of its realization by performers: actors-singers, orchestra and conductor, the
group of artists appointed in order to perform and transmit the opera work to
the listening and watching audience. She outlines the peculiarly complex range
of conductor s activities, with which one comes to meet when executing a mu¬
sical work in the form of opera. As it is shown in Chapter
1,
operatic drama in
its essence is played on stage by actors-singers through entrusted to them, cor¬
responding to the content of drama, roles, and they are accompanied by the or¬
chestra, but precisely, it is the conductor, who takes part in all of the elements
and phases of the musical preparation of the piece and after then

of the expressive realization of the course of drama. The conductor takes care and
responsibility for establishing a mutual, within the whole group of performers,
harmonious interpretation of the work.
In the beginning of activities, before the mutual harmonious interpretation of
the piece is reached, the conductor stays alone face-to-face with the libretto, the
score and careful own studies of their notations; clarifies text uncertainties, for¬
mulates musical and dramaturgical questions, searches for appropriate answers,
imagines details of performance and creates the vision of interpretation, con¬
structs the realization plan. From familiarization with the message and content
of the libretto and score, the conductor, for the purpose of achieving the possibly
most complete reading of the composition s notation, immerses deeply into the
questions related to the composer s aesthetics to get a thorough knowledge on
his specific musical language; analyzes in details the construction of the opera
together with the corresponding dramatic sphere. All these actions, which result
in the accurate, deep and comprehensive understanding, absorbing of the work,
constitute the fundamental key phase on the road of creating the sound-shaped
image of the work and its course in the conductor s musical mind.
On inspirations during the creation of interpretational assumptions for the per¬
formance of Balthazar the author writes in Chapter
2.
She underlines the impor¬
tance of word of the libretto, powered also by the composer, and the elements

of the composer s style, which emerge from the score, concluding with the seman¬
tic context and message of the opera. An important place in the process of creat¬
ing the interpretation had consultations with
Zygmunt
Krauze, whose some com¬
ments and advice concerning his music and Balthazar are frequently quoted in the
entire study.
The capstone of conductor s activities in the area of independent work with
texts of score and libretto is creating an own vision of interpretation based on
the born in the mind „alive music image and course of the piece, together with
defining the intended purposes and technical means to be used for achieving
the assumed effects. The author strove to elaborate these matters in the exten¬
sive material of Chapter
3.
Comprehensive analysis of the score, done from the
perspective of conductor, has been performed within the range of character¬
istic needs of the conductor s interpretation manner. It reflects a significantly
great value as a source material for understanding and getting to know the ways
and means of transmitting a musical piece from the composer s score notation,
through the conductor s vision of interpretation, to the real sounding form of
the work.
The described interpretation is subordinate to the major goal of establish¬
ing an artistic creation of communicating the work to the listener, in which the
specific for this opera, but universal in its dimension, thought of such values, as
freedom and its loss, enslavement, condemnation and punishment, meets the
characteristic spirit of
Zygmunt
Krauze s music, uniquely stable in its outside
contour and full inside of invention, intellect and expressive richness, creating
together a coherent timeless unity. The composer s masterpiece, based on the
text of libretto, breaths from the score the source poetic phrase of Wyspianski s
dramas. The meaningful timeless musical silence ending the work carries this
spirited entirety into the future.
The opera Balthazar in two acts (in four parts) for soloists, choir and orchestra
has been composed by
Zygmunt
Krauze for the commision of Warsaw Chamber
Opera (world premier in
2001)
to the libretto of
Ryszard
Pery t,
which is based
on three dramas by
Stanislaw
Wyspiański
-
Daniel,
Juliusz
II,
Skałka.
The perfor¬
mance of the
opera
and the present study refer in origin to the texts of libretto
and score, which have not yet been published.
The author would like this paper to be a contribution for development of
methodological basics in the realization of opera assignments by conductor, ani¬
mate a discussion in the major current of issues regarding the conductor s inter¬
pretation, and also initiate a discourse on the topic of conductor s activities in the
field of modern opera works. It can be a noteworthy material for scholars and
students of conducting, and a wider group of people interested in conductor in¬
terpretations and performing opera.
