This publication deals with two late-romantic violin sonatas by the Swiss
composer Hans Huber, No.

The works are described and analysed, furthermore performance-related
problems are discussed.
The publication is based on the author s extensive research and perfor¬
mance experience. Dr. Marucha has dedicated herself to reviving and presenting
this part of the late 19th/early 20th century European music history which re¬
mains unknown, forgotten and has been unfairly underestimated.
In Chapter One Hans Huber, the most notable post-romantic Swiss com¬
poser is portrayed. Huber received a thorough education. As a young boy he
studied piano, music, history and plainsong at the Solothurn Institute, and sung
in a church choir. He continued his studies at the Leipzig Conservatoire, where
one of his teachers was
Carl Reinecke.
He soon achieved success both as a pia¬
nist and composer. Huber settled in Basel, where he became a founding member
of the local conservatoire and then from
1896-1918,
it s director. In
1902
he
received an honorary doctorate from the University of Basel.
Huber s works show a distinct nationalistic character, if only to mention the
once famous 1st Symphony Tell and the two
Festspielmusik
written to cele¬
brate Swiss national holidays. A most prolific composer, he wrote two operas,
eight symphonies, an oratorio, several masses, four piano concertos, four cello
concertos, nine violin sonatas, two violin concertos, songs, choral works and
chamber pieces for various of instruments. However, the popularity of his music
did not last long on the concert stages. It soon vanished from mainstream
repertoire which is most unfortunate. The author argues that Huber s music
demonstrates the finest qualities of the late romantic period such as a wealth of
melodic ideas, epic breadth, elegiac tranquility alongside dramatic force and
solemn timbres.
Hans Huber s output is not only important in terms of Swiss and European
music history. His music, first and foremost, bears remarkable artistic and
expressive qualities.

Summary
In Chapter Two the author looks at the origins of the pieces she has selected
and discusses their characteristics. For each movement there is an in-depth
analysis of the structure, texture, it s rhythmic content, interaction of the two
instruments and the use of particular registers.
The subject matter of Chapter Three is performance. The elements of
technique and means of expression essential for a competent execution of the
piece in question are explained.
Dr. Marucha s work is the first major publication in Polish devoted to Hans
Huber. The author hopes that through her book she will be able to acquaint
violinists with Huber s music and bring it back to concert halls. The author
believes that Huber s works are a valuable contribution to European culture and
deserve to be performed.
The pieces presented in the book were recorded for the first time on a CD
(AP0266) which was released in
2012,
and features performances by the author,
Dr.
Agnieszka Marucha
(violin) and pianist
Tomasz Pawłowski.
The recording
was made in association with the Embassy of Switzerland in Warsaw and the
Fryderyk
Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. The CD has been highly
praised by the music press across Europe. Excerpts from reviews are enclosed.
