Punishment for Tyrants
The Protestant and the Liberal
Doctrines of Resistance
Summary
The present work is currently the only one which identifies and thoroughly
analyses the interconnections between three problematic spheres in the history
of the Protestant and the Liberal doctrines of resistance. The first of them en¬
compasses their sources (to which is devoted Part I); the second relates to their
development during the Reformation (Part II); the third includes John Locke's
doctrine of the natural individual right of resistance and its transformation into
the concept of civil disobedience of Henry David Thoreau (Part III). The author
comes with an innovative solution to one of the burning questions that stem from
the object of exploration
-
this of the sources. In the first place, it is proven that
because the concepts, which formed the aggregate of ideas of resistance during
the Middle Ages, have emerged to a large extent from the interaction of the main
institutional actors, the correct approach requires that all of them are 'charged'
as sources with different weight. In the second
palce,
it is demonstrated that the
predominant part of the arguments in the Protestant doctrines of resistance are
not a result of 'intellectual piracy', which robs the Catholics, but are a product of
their own creators.
While mapping the road, traveled by the Protestant and the Liberal doc¬
trines, within the chronological boundaries of the object, the author illuminates its
darkest 'sections'. He establishes the reasons for the conflicting interpretations of
the Roman law; explains the relationship between the English constitutionalism,
during thirteenth and seventeenth centuries, and the doctrines of resistance; de¬
fines the character of the 'exchange' of radical postulates between Lutherans and
Calvinists. In the dissertation for the first time is outlined a periodization of the
birth and the development of the examined concepts. The author distinguishes
between four stages (ideas of resistance, doctrines, natural individual right and
civil disobedience). The periodization is built upon the dissertation's theses of
the 'uneven pace' with which the doctrines of resistance marched through and
were modified during the epochs, the principle difference between the concepts
of individual and his rights during the Middle Ages and the Bourgeois revolutions
and, most importantly, the intrinsic connec tions between the postulates that sup¬
port the mutiny and these of the limited government. The suggested periodiza¬
tion provides an indepth reading and serves as a compass into some of the most
debated pages in the constitutional history of the Modern world.
