Summary
Gustáv
Husák
The power of Politics
-
the Politician of Power
One hundred years since the birth of a personality is usually a good oppor¬
tunity to contemplate his/her life, fate or achievements.
Gustav Husák
was un¬
doubtedly a great personality. As
Ľubomír Lipták,
the Slovak historian, wrote
of him,
Husák s
problem was that out of several options lined up before him,
he had chosen to promote and push communism and totalitarian ideology,
instead of becoming an advocate of democracy. The work at hand seeks the
answers to multiple questions
-
was
Husák
a sovereign head of the Commu¬
nist Party or simply a puppet in Soviet hands? Did he alleviate the impact of
the August
68
invasion during the years of normalization? What was his youth
like? What was his role during the Slovak National Uprising? What did he ex¬
perience in prison during the wild 1950 s? Was he driven by anything besides
his fascination with power?
The collective monograph of Slovak and Czech historians called
Gustav
Husák:
The power of Politics
—
the Politician of Power is divided into seven
parts. Part I deals with the political situation in the Czechoslovak regimes in
general and
Husák s
position among the political elites.
Vilém Prečan
and
Stanislav
Sikora
interprets
Husák
as a political personality with a wide scope
and influence, they tracks his years of maturing within the student movement,
the war, his part in the
1948
Prague Communist coup, imprisonment and his
return to the political scene.
Juraj Benko
puts forth a genesis of the Com¬
munist movement in our region and summarizes the factors which influenced
the development of Communist ideology across the young intellectual elite in
Slovakia during the inter-war years. Adam Hudek offers analyses of histori¬
cal representations of
Husák,
concentrating especially on the perspectives of
Czech and Slovak Marxist historiographies on one hand, and the war-time
Slovak Republic emigre politicians turned historians on the other hand.
In the second part of the publication, the authors focus on the childhood
and political maturing of G.
Husák. Tomáš Černák
captures his childhood and
grammar-school times in two chapters, as well as his political activity after the
retreat of the Slovak National Uprising. Martin Mocko explores
Husák s ac-

tivity
in the Slovak anti-fascist resistance, with
Stanislav Mičev
linking on
his narrative with the description of
Husák s
role
and place during the Slovak
National Uprising of August-September
1944.
In this period,
Husák
is form¬
ing into one of the main organizers of the Communist party as well as the
resistance movement in general.
The third part of the book is dedicated to the first years of the post-war
era. The authors capture
Husák s
share of credit for the economic develop¬
ment of Slovakia
(Ľudovít
Hallon
-
Miroslav Sabol),
his relationship to the
Democratic party during
1945-1948
(Marek Syrný),
the governmental and le¬
gal position of Slovakia during this period
(Michal Macháček),
as well as the
participation of
Husák
in the February Communist Revolution in
1948
(Jan
Pešek).
The analysis of the trials with the so-called bourgeoisie nationalists is
a subject of interest for
Jan Kalous. Kalous
is concerned not only with
Husák,
but also with other members of the Slovak Communist elite and he points out
the way in which the regime eradicated any, often made-up, opponents. The
next chapter reveals how
Husák
later reminisced of his political co-prison-
w
ers.
Michal Stefanský
opens yet another topic
-
he maps
Husák s
attempts
at re-integration into political life. Milan Zemko links in with the analysis of
how
Husák
transformed from a pre-68 Communist reformer into an agent of
politics of normalization after
1969.
One of the key themes of this period is
Husák s
part in passing the law about the Czechoslovak Federation as a part
of
Dubček s
Action Plan from the spring of
1968.
Pavel
Žáček
captures, on
the other hand, why and in which ways
Husák
was a subject to surveillance by
the State Security Police.
The following three parts of the book have a common denominator
-
the
period of Czechoslovak normalization. The authors here seek answers to ques¬
tions of the functioning of this political phenomenon in the development of the
Czechoslovak totalitarian ideology, especially how this era manifested itself
after the August invasion in
1968
in the national dimensions (political, eco¬
nomic, socio-cultural) and the international dimensions (political, business,
economic). The influence of these dimensions on high politics and every-day
life is also examined.
Jan Rychlík,
an expert on the given topic, writes about
the Czecho-Slovak constitutive and political relations in
Husák s
perspective.
It is clearly deducible from his analysis that
Husák
was a disciplined and self-
aware Communist and a party member. He explains that
Husák
profoundly
stood, since his youth, behind the principle of equality with regards to the
Czechs and the Slovaks. He promoted federation of both nations, although its
eloquent execution was not possible, due to the existence of so-called ideology
1066
Summary
of realistic socialism with the Czechoslovak Communist party in a dominant
position and with Prague as a political centre.
Besides the listed chapters, the book possesses an untraditional introduc¬
tion and conclusion. The Introduction (by
Vlasta Jaksicsová)
offers a perspec¬
tive on
Gustav Husák
in connection to his personality profile in the flow of
history and the development of the Slovak intellectual elite. The conclusion of
the book, written by
Jan Rychlík
and Milan Zemko, offers two views
-
the first
one from a Czech, and the second one from a Slovak author
-
on
Husák s
po¬
litical life. A rich photo-documentation is a key part of this collective biogra¬
phy including also a list of the archives and archive funds used, a bibliography
and a name register.
The book
Gustav Husák
The power of Politics ~ the Politician of Power is
a result of the team-work of several younger and earlier born historians. They
offer a consensus in that
Gustav Husák
belongs to a range of controversial and
yet significant personalities of modern Czechoslovak history.
In the contemporary public reflection on important figures of our twentieth-
century history, some individuals have been placed in a hall of fame , others
were put to trial and declared to be condemned by history . From the mist of
a Communist past, some grey average figures can also be seen emerging, as
they were in fact the majority during the totalitarian Communist rule.
Husák
received the trial and condemnation, undoubtedly in many ways rightly so.
His current 100th anniversary is a great opportunity for historians and enthu¬
siasts alike to analyze the politics and the regime, which he impersonated and
helped to create, and which he eventually witnessed declining and falling. We
believe that our book will be a valuable contribution to that.
