Pearl of the Orient- this is how national hero
José Rizal
calls the Philippines. This was not a description of the actual
state of the country during his time but a metaphor for their aspiration
of a liberated, free Philippines. It is a vision that is not easy to bring
into reality, nonetheless, it endures to this day.
Even more than
25
years after the fall of the Marcos dictatorship, many
challenges remain in the everyday life in the
7,107
islands. Agrarian
reform moves at a slow pace, poverty and social inequality are increas¬
ing, human rights violations remain the order of the day, machismo
continues to pervade, and traditional politicians
(trapos)
are at the
helm of the government. Nevertheless, the Filipin@s are counted as
among the happiest people in the world and the Philippines has one of
the most active civil societies worldwide. A contradiction? Perhaps, but
it is only one of many that makes the country exciting
-
and upsetting.
The aim of
Handbook
Philippines is to shed light to the different facets of
life (and of daily struggles and survival) in the Philippines. It consists
of a manifold of introductory articles on key sociopolitical, cultural,
and economic problems
-
from agrarian reform, labor migration and
social protection, education, and health and gender, as well as politics,
culture, civil society, and many more.
All contributors, Germans and Filipin@s alike, have gained extensive
knowledge on different aspects of the Philippines through their travels,
encounters with the people, and the sharing of daily life with them.
More than just offering various interpretations in understanding the
Philippines, they wish to support others who also want to contribute to
making change happen in the country.
