OFTHE DIOCESE OF
ĐAKOVO
AND
SRIJEM
1944-1960
The Communist Party in Yugoslavia strove to be the only ideological and political
authority and destroyed any other source of authority. Since religion could not submit to
prohibitions, overt believers and their churches were driven from public life and put under
restrictions so that whatever they organized and did could at least be supervised. In its
struggle with religious communities the communist regime had to pay attention to popular
sentiment as well as to international circumstances. The Catholic Church was held in high
esteem by the people and had a great influence on them, not only as a religious but also as a
public institution operating in the field of education and charity work. An educated clergy
and material independence from the state as well as its international influence gave the
Catholic Church strength to be able to resist attacks. Consequently the communists had to
be more careful in the struggle against the Catholic Church than against other opponents of
the regime. The Catholic Church was perceived as a possible gathering center for opposition
political forces as well as the strongest ideological opponent.
The trial and conviction of Archbishop Alojzije Stepinac represented the climax of the
communist coup against the Catholic Church. However, by the imprisonment of Archbishop
Stepinac the government still did not succeed in putting the Catholic Church under its
control, but made the majority of the Croatian people as well as of the democratic part of the
world even less tolerant to the Yugoslav regime. By staging trials of members of the Catholic
Church and other opponents of the regime as well as by introducing a single-party system,
Yugoslavia created in the democratic world an image of itself as a totalitarian state.
The communist leadership of the Partisan movement even during the war took and
fostered repressive measures against the Catholic Church and its priests; and consequently,
numerous Catholic priests were murdered. However, such policies continued even after the
war, whereas, apart from the individual priests being murdered and exiled without a trial, the
legal banishment of the clergy, as it was called, was resorted to. Thus in the beginning many
summary trials ensued, in most cases ending in the death penalty; later the trials were placed
in
formal
legal frameworks, but remained under the direct influence of the Communist
Party and usually resulted in long sentences of imprisonment; over the course of time they
were gradually reduced.

The reason for that is visible in the programme standpoints of the Communist Party
of Yugoslavia, from which an anti-church attitude and a forewarning of a fight against
religious belief and the church in general can be seen. The CPY was, as well, under the
direct influence of the communist regime in the USSR that was engaged in a ruthless
showdown with religious communities. Furthermore, within the CPY a negative attitude
to the Catholic Church developed due to its alleged negative role, i.e. its affinity to the
Ustasha regime during the Second World War. Efforts were made to spread such an attitude
in society in general, resulting in the development of hatred for the Church, particularly
among communist activists who accordingly vented their hatred on certain priests. The
consequences were that priests were murdered and beaten outside the judicial processes.
Such a policy was carried out throughout Yugoslavia and Croatia, and so of course in the
diocese of
Đakovo
and
Srijem.
According to data collected in this book, which are not final,
in the territory of the diocese of
Đakovo
and
Srijem,
since the establishment of Partisan
control of one part of the diocese in
1944
(Srijem)
and the offsetting up of communist rule
in May
1945,
to the end of
1960 9
priests were killed,

more priests, quite likely killed, can
be added, as well as one seminary student;

priests were recorded missing,

were sentenced
to death and executed (and probably one more). In camps and prisons

priests were
imprisoned, serving shorter or longer penalties. Many priests were systematically placed
under arrest for hearings at State Security Administration, Bishop
Stjepan
Bäuerlein
being
among them too.
During the
1960s
sentences of Catholic priests considerably declined due to the
normalization of relationships between the Holy See and Yugoslavia; the result was the
signing of the normalization protocol in
1966
and the renewal of diplomatic relations
in
1970.
