| adam_text | The book is dedicated to the study of the repressive measures of the
Communist regime in the field of the traditional pottery of Ukraine
during 1930S-1950S on the territory of the former Opishne District of the
Poltava Region. This is the first fundamental study of the above-mentioned
issues in the history.
On the basis of the archive and literary data, materials of the original field
studies the main manifestations of the repressive actions of the occupation
government directed against the representatives of pottery and ceramology
have been detected and systemized. They belonged to different aspects:
•
The so-called dispossession of the rich peasants who did not support
the collective forms of the household managing in the early
1930s.
Not
only rich and middle households, but also poor ones were dispossessed.
•
The
1932-1933
Famishment that lead to death of hundreds of potters
around the entire territory of Ukraine. Sometimes entire potter s
families perished. Some of the pottery masters became victims of
cannibalism.
•
Charging of potters with political (anti-Soviet propaganda) and
economical (jobbery, tax dodging) crimes and sentencing to
imprisonment for different terms or shooting.
•
Persecution for belonging to a certain religion: from deprivation of
the suffrage rights in the
1920s
to imprisonment for different terms
during the 1930S-1950S.
•
The purge of the party and state establishment of the late
1920s -
the
early
1930s,
which affected the management and teaching staff of
pottery schools and the related workshops directly or indirectly.
•
Conviction of the pottery factory workers in the late
1930s -
the early
1940s
to different terms of imprisonment.
•
Conviction of workers and graduates of the pottery schools in the late
1930s -
the
1940s
to different terms of imprisonment or shooting.
•
The complication of the transfer of potters from collective farms to
pottery co-operative associations in the late
1940s -
the early
1950s.
Persecutions for the unauthorized transfer.
•
Persecutions of potters by fiscal bodies for home pottery and by
sanitary bodies for making glazed crockery.

(Fedir
Zadorozhny, Feoktyst Moklyak, Lavrentiy Onyshchenko, Ivan Pichka),
pottery factory workers (Larion Hladyrevsky, Opanas Lysenko,
Petro
Shyray),
the staff and graduates of the pottery schools (Dmytro Bilyk, Yakiv Korytsky,
Hryhoriy Krempokha, Lyubov Ostryanyn, Serhiy
Reva, Paraskoviya
Shyray),
a ceramologist (Yakiv Ryzhenko) have been provided. The personalities
include biographical data, materials of the criminal cases with scientific
comments and the bibliography related to the each repressed person.
The research shows the methodical extermination of the handicraft
pottery in Ukraine during more than
30
years by the occupation government.
The
1930s -
the
1950s
repressive actions against figures of the Ukrainian
traditional pottery had a negative influence on its state and quickened the
decline of the pottery art trade in Ukraine.
