monograph entitled Horyzony
opery
( Horizons of the
Opera ) edited by Dobrochna Ratajczakowa and
Katarzyna
Lisiecka is a presentation of thirteen studies concerning the opera issues,
observed from the interdisciplinary perspectives of: the theory of litera¬
ture, musicology, theatre studies, film studies and of culture. All articles
composing the monograph aim at a possibly comprehensive portrayal of
the attractiveness of the opera
—
the subject of study shared by all authors.
The publication is addressed to the audiences interested in art, theatre,
broadly understood humanities and a cultural and aesthetic reflection.
According to research principles into musical theatre, pursued in the
humanities in Western Europe and the world, the presented articles deal
with, on the basis of the most recent literature on the subject, their own
queries and scholarly findings, the questions concerning individual oper¬
atic compositions, and also

The volume starts with the articles by Anna

( Shepherdess,

historical and literary sources (mediaeval and Renaissance) as an inspira¬
tion or the subject for dramatic and musical compositions. Anna Igielska
brings attention to Shakespearian roots of Verdi s opera, recalls the folk
origin of ballads, their popularity in the general circulation of the English
culture of the Elizabethan time the influence of those phenomena on the
songs occurring in the work by Shakespeare as well as the opera by Verdi,
significantly enhancing the meaning of both works. Barbara Judkowiak
provides an in-depth analysis of various plots of the story about
Griselda
focusing on the motifs, topics and
topoi
(love, faithfulness, devotion, hero¬
ism) forming a universal heritage of the European culture, which in a fine
way express the meanings found at many levels of the operatic work.

European culture,
and, at the same time, present a valuable analysis of the contents and
form of the selected plots and genre questions, musical and dramatic, ob¬
servable in the operas of Polish composers. Between the two abovemen-
tioned studies readers shall find the analysis of operatic motifs appearing

Three Visions of the Opera in Count Monte

by Alexander Dumas ). It refers to the question of relationships
connecting the subject matter of the opera with epic poetry and their mu¬
tual bonds concerning the formal structure of the composition. The author
stresses the significance of the references to the opera included in Dumas
novel, which influence the structure of the storyline, presentation of the
inner motivations of the protagonist, as well as credible construction of the
background of the era in which the action of the novel takes place. Also
Anna
Lubońska
points out important relations between the creators of
the operatic and literary works. In the study titled Thomas Mann

around the
Musical Legend
in Three Acts of
Palestrina ) she combines the subject matter of the opera by Hans Pfitzner
with ideological and biographical elements appearing in the opinions of
Thomas Mann and the composer of the opera and concerning their out¬
looks on art and its social and cultural tasks.
References to great masterpieces of the musical theatre and their
close relationships with song, drama, film, are, in turn, the point of depar¬
ture for research for several further studies. Joanna
Maleszyńska (O pio¬
sence w operze
[ About Song in the Opera ]) analyses lyrical vocal forms
in the selected operatic works: Gretry s
Ryszardzie Lwie Serce
( Richard
the Lionsheart ), in Mozart s Don Giovanni, in Flotow s Martha and in
Otelio
by Verdi. She demonstrates their different meanings and functions
in structuring the message of the composition.
Katarzyna Lisiecka (Z poetyki libretta. Kilka uwag o dramatycznych
i epickich walorach dzieła operowego)
[ From the Poetics of Libretto. Some
Remarks on the Dramatic and Epic Qualities of the Operatic Work ] treats
of the problems connected with the relationships between libretto and the

visual part occurring in the opera composition. Proceeding to the analy¬
sis of meaning of the verbal layer of the opera and its relationships with
other dramatic forms, the author presents the area of theatrical and visu¬
al interdependencies taking place between the means of expression of the
operatic theatre and dramatic theatre, for which the opera is a source of
important inspiration.
Krzysztof Kozłowski
in his sketch entitled „Wagner

Wagnera . O polskiej recepcji „Pierścienia

takes a look upon the ideas and concepts characteristic for stag¬
ings of musical dramas by Wagner on Polish scenes in the recent twenty
years. The leading motif for him is the problem of transferring the mean¬
ings inherent in this work as confronted with various director s interven¬
tions taking into account
—
to a greater or smaller degree
—
the social and
political situation in which the staging was produced.
The article by
Małgorzata Choczaj Estetyka filmu i opery.
„Otelio
Franco Zeffirellego
( Aesthetics of Film and the Opera.
Otelio

Zeffirelli ) introduces a film expert perspective into the sphere of reflec¬
tion on the opera theatre. The author demonstrates the way the means
of director s art contribute to the creation of an intensified film aura en¬
riched by visual elements. In an in-depth analysis he defines the musi¬
cal and film masterpiece
Otelio
by Zeffirelli as a story of downfall and
annihilation of the protagonists, becoming inevitably evident at its dra¬
matic, musical and film-visual level. The search for interdependencies be¬
tween the drama and libretto in the opera, set in the context of reflec¬
tion on the fringe of literature and theatre, is the point of departure for
the two following studies.
Alina

lysing the selected musical dramatic works demonstrate the in-depth mes¬
sages of those compositions, as well as a broadly understood ideological
context of the era, in which they were written.
The volume concludes the text by Dobrochna Ratajczakowa entitled:
Straszny dwór Chącińskiego-Moniuszki w cieplarni mieszczańskiego

[ The Haunted Manor by
Chęciński-Moniuszko
in the Hothouse of
Bourgeois Theatre ] being an important proposal of a new reading of the
national opera by
Moniuszko
in the context of cultural and civilizational
transformations occurring in the 19th century. The metaphor of Crystal
Palace and „hothouse served the author as an important reference point
208
Horizons of the Opera
for the presentation of dependencies between theatre
-
including operatic
theatre
—
and the commercial aspects of culture in the times of the birth
of capitalism. The papers constituting the volume
Horyzonty opery
show
interesting thematic and formal relationships occurring within the opera
art, and also on its outskirts: musical-filmic, libretto-visual, dramatic-cul¬
tural, theatrical etc. They mark
—
valuable from the point of view of the
humanistic studies
—
the horizons of reflection upon the opera as a model
realization of the idea of synthesis and correspondence of the arts.
