SUMMARY
THE REPRESENTATION OF CZECH MEDIEVAL NOBILITY
Starting points
A book with such a lapidary title does not have a subtitle. It is quite in¬
tentional. The reason is that there are several categories that could or
perhaps even should appear there. There are many more than would
be acceptable in such a case. But if we attempted to formulate a cou¬
ple of key terms, they would be context and means of expression .
Moreover, the means (forms), through which representation came to
be realized, and the context, in which it was realized, are a part of one
and the same unit of meaning. One did not exist without the other and
even could not exist. Every message
-
ifit
was not to miss its target ef¬
fect
-
had to meet one elementary condition: it needed to carry a whole
spectrum of means of expression that were intelligible both to the au¬
thor of the message and to the circle of its recipients.
If we ask after the bearers of historical memory in the medieval
society, two media automatically occur to us: human memory and the
written word. (The late medieval invention of the printing press had
only a marginal influence on the medieval period and only in very spe¬
cific contexts.) We can, therefore, ask: oral tradition or written sources?
The answer is that the widely held notion of a linear development from
oral transmission to written word and to printed word is both decep¬
tive and misleading. It is evident that oral transmission and the written
word co-existed for centuries and that the written record never in the
course of the medieval period eliminated the weight of oral testimony.
The majority, illiterate population had only one medium for remember¬
ing available to them, that of their own memory.
The other snag is the fact that what was written was that which was
supposed to be remembered . The fragmentary nature of the witness
of the written sources, caused not only by all kinds of losses but also by
the fact that much had never been recorded in writing at all, presents
450

limits - in combination with the selectivity of the sources and the mis¬
interpretations, both intentional and inadvertent
-
that a historian
must take into consideration and must, where possible, try to be recon¬
ciled to them. Both the former and the latter are treacherous and both
have repeatedly posed an open challenge. In the first instance, the goal
was to uncover the intention (and the time and person(s) who stood
at the birth of a given
fabulation
and who had a stake in it) and, in the
second instance, to confront the remembered and the documented ;
here the historical remembering found a wide scope for as early as the
early medieval period and, compared to the qualities of human mem¬
ory, its outcomes do not appear flattering. To look for historical truth
would indeed be foolish.
Material monuments, if we can thus describe a large and internally
very heterogeneous group of all other bearers of historical memory ,
initially seemed to have the advantage of offering a more immedi¬
ate witness to a past reality, but let us not be fooled. Even here there
are many pitfalls. And it is not only the ubiquitous fragmentation of
sources (and resulting doubts about the representativeness of extant
collections), but also another important aspect
-
that is the loss of the
(historical) context: to connect the witness of written and material
sources tends to be, due to the circumstantial selectivity with which
our sources survived, very appealing but can only rarely be realized.
In comparison with the reconstruction of noble genealogies and
property holdings, to which the sources usually witness directly (with¬
out underestimating the interpretative difficulties of both), the ques¬
tion of representation involves searching for and filling in links between
given facts (we leave aside, for the moment, the numerous question
marks that plague the very construction of facts
-
falsifications, tenden¬
tious literary and narrative texts, and variously dated and interpreted
building development or of a painting decoration of a noble castle,
monastery or church). And not only that, we often have access to de¬
scriptions of events, for which we (roughly speaking) know the actors,
circumstances or its result. The large majority of sources do not offer
the wider context of the story
-
the role of the historian is at least to
attempt such a reconstruction.
THE REPRESENTATION OF CZECH MEDIEVAL NOBILITY
451
Conception
I understand the subject of noble representation as one whole unit of
logically interrelated components, with which individuals (or families)
represented themselves to (or against) their surroundings
-
to their con¬
temporaries and future generations. The following thus all belong to
this theme: decorative castles, noble monasteries with necropolis, ar¬
tistic patronage and spectacular festivities and much else. All of these
had their own public, the recipients of their messages, and created the
image of the individual and his family. In order to create an image that
corresponded with the social status, it was necessary to choose such
means of expression that adequately expressed such a status. It is a set
of (retroactively) constructed components or, if we wish, colors of
one spectrum , with which the medieval people were well acquainted,
whose symbolic language they understood and which they were able ac¬
tively to use; however, it is only the modern historian, who puts all the
components together into one whole. The most fundamental point of
departure is the search for the interconnectedness of meaning: the ma¬
terial, which we have on our hands, is not linear but
cyclical , and its
individual sectors are mutually closely interrelated, and they are even
dependent on each other and complement each other in their witness.
The reconstructed model is the only thing that we have
-
medieval
sources do not offer any explicitly and completely formulated founda¬
tion. The losses of material, both written and material, as well as the
limits of the narrative ability of extant sources can, in part, be compen¬
sated at least by one unimpeachable positive: that is the stereotypical
nature of the most fundamental models (the context and the means
of expression). Any reconstruction in the case of positive survival of
sources automatically creates a basic framework, which can be applied
in a similarly stereotypical way, with which it functioned at the time,
which is the object of our interest. It is this very framework of mean¬
ing, or rather these parallel frameworks of meaning, that enables us
to approach even those cases, for which direct witness is not available
or which have such a fragmented character that their interpretation is
possible only based on and with the help of analogies.

Structure
The reflections on the structure of the work, dedicated to the noble rep¬
resentation as a category that contains a set of elements, with which
the individuals and families declared (and identified) their social sta¬
tus (their social capital ), were based on several assumptions. Two of
them determined that the book be divided into two sections
-
I. Con¬
text, II. Means of expression. The first assumption is that no medium
for representation came into being purposelessly; they were always used
with relation to the potential audience ( the recipient of the message ),
which then determined the use of a particular means of expression.
Second, it is clear that representation, both personal and family, was
based on (and necessarily required) several stabilized types of contexts,
in which it came to be realized. Residential courts and towns, noble
monasteries and
nécropoles
(in monasteries or churches) were among
the most fundamental. The spectrum of means of expression and the
spectrum of contexts, without which they would not be capable of ex¬
pressing anything
-
these are the two aspects that shape reconstruction,
thus determining the fundamental structure of the work.
The context and the means of expression were inseparable catego¬
ries, whose mutual interconnectedness gave rise to an entire spectrum
of variants of meaning. The
monumentality
of architecture, both secu¬
lar and ecclesiastical, impressed all spectators. Only select individuals
had access to the representative spaces inside a residential seat, into
the church presbytery or the cloister inside a monastery, but everyone
could watch a noble entry into a residential town or the Corpus
Christi
procession passing through its streets. The whole spectrum of festivi¬
ties and ceremonies had their public and private elements: the first
took place in the context and spaces accessible to all, that is especially
in town streets or in parish churches, the latter behind closed doors of
noble residences or in the closed sacred spaces (for example, monas¬
teries and noble chapels). Finally, the record of noble traditions
-
no¬
ble historiography and constructs of family histories were basically an
elite undertaking, limited to the circle of the initiated in the context
of noble monasteries and to the intellectual elements of the residen¬
tial court. The elementary awareness of family origins and eventually
about famous ancestors was, however, at the same time one of the
key components of noble legitimation in public. The context or, in
THE REPRESENTATION OF CZECH MEDIEVAL NOBILITY
453
the wider sense, the stage for representation was usually any (public)
space: the chambers in the Prague castle, the site of a tournament or
a lodging inn because here and also in a number of other places the in¬
dividual proclaimed his social status and visibly expressed his place in
the social hierarchy. In all contexts, he used (for this purpose) a varied
spectrum of means of expression
-
it included oral, hewn and written
(and later also printed) word, gestures and ceremonial types of behav¬
iour and conduct, and representative architecture, spectacular expres¬
sions of piety (support of ecclesiastical institutions) as well as generous
charity and patronage. The coat of arms then had a specific role as an
omnipresent means of expressing personal and family identity while
remaining a representative symbol.
The reconstructed (and in the book presented) model of the noble
representation is based on a number of particular moments, which
are in their witness not only incontrovertible but also suggest a uni¬
fied interpretation. The attempts to combine the general and the spe¬
cific are here resolved by the fact that the one is formed from the other
and that one without the other would lose all sense, which then sug¬
gests that both must necessarily be present in the text and accounted
for. The weight of choice thus narrows down to the question of mu¬
tual proportion of elements, their balance and also the choice of suit¬
able and truly representative cases (without relying on the notoriously
well-known ones).
Development tendencies
The reconstruction of context, forms and means of expression of self-
reflection and representation of Czech nobility documents also the
longue durée
of trends and tendencies, whose roots are based deeply in
the medieval period. And this is not only a question of relativization
of a seemingly sharp transition, nor of opposition of gothic and
renaissance . When we focus on the period before the Battle of the
White Mountain, it should be entirely clear, how closely was that pe¬
riod linked with the medieval one. It took over older concepts, spec¬
trum of contexts and means of expression, which it adapted here and
there, but in any case, it prolonged the life of the medieval period. The
military architecture of the renaissance castles is nothing but a copy
of older building elements; already the later medieval period relied on
454

historicism while respecting older (original) building structures. He¬
raldic presentations, genealogies and
genealogie
fictions, references to
famous ancestors and moments of family history, representative seats
and ancient sacral places of family memory. The conflict regarding no¬
bility, about who is better, who ought to be subordinated to whom, and
where there were no unimpeachable documents, new ones were falsified.
Rituals and ceremonials suggesting the unchangeability of the order ,
visualization of the social hierarchies, luxury of residential courts and
pompa
funebris. The artistic patronage and intellectual interests, study
travel, pilgrimage travel and chivalric travel.
Nothing new under the sun. All of this and much more, which will
interest and charm us in the study of representation of early modern
nobility, was known as early as in the late medieval period. Its forms
are possibly more refined and the sources, both written and material,
needed for reconstruction, are much more auspicious. So much so that
we could be led to believe that the 16th century brought about a kind
of qualitative change, consisting in the development of new forms and
means of expression for individual and collective representation. How¬
ever, the continuity with the middle ages is unmistakable. And this is
the attractiveness of investigating the long medieval period
-
in this
case the study of noble representation in the early modern period. And
if we are rather reserved when it comes to innovating the spectrum of
instruments of expression, we shall undoubtedly be interested in the
ways, in which the inherited forms continued to develop, be refined
and adapted to the changing needs of noble self-representation.
