Zusammenfassung:The Profane Museum, one of the least-known sectors of the Vatican Museums, was created to bring together works and ancient discoveries of a 'non-Christian' nature. Following the restoration of the museum spaces and the artefacts they house, and accompanying the exhibition of the same name, this catalogue, available in three languages, celebrates the Museum's history, focusing on the papacy of Pope Pius VI, the period in which the collections reached the peak of their splendour. Ancient gemstones, cameos, medals and coins, items of everyday use, and above all the magnificent works of the goldsmith Luigi Valadier: this valuable evidence of noble traditions and refined craftsmanship is brought together from prestigious institutions: the Louvre, the Hermitage, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, the Italian National Institute of Graphic Design and the Vatican Apostolic Library - returning, for the occasion of this exhibition, to the place of their original conservation, the Profane Museum. The catalogue, including essays were written by experts from the loaning museums, begins by describing the institution of the Museum in 1767 by Pope Clement VII and, through detailed archival research, traces the events relating to the acquisitions and the formation of the collections. The technical notes relating to the artefacts, accompanied by rich illustrations, provide information on dimensions, materials and production techniques, alongside the provenance and history of the items in the various collections they belonged to, thus demonstrating their great antiquarian value as well as their artistic and archaeological prestige.
