PRIESTS AND PROTOPRIESTS OF THE
MEDIEVAL SERBIAN CHURCH
Serbian Church as an institution developed at the same time as
medieval Serbia. Furthermore, the clergy in the medieval Serbia
formed alongside other two social classes, the aristocracy and
dependant citizens. The forming of the social classes was a lasting
process and it happened gradually, by members of clergy gaining
certain privileges. The end of the process of forming and closing of
this social class happened in the first half of the 14th century. During
that period, legal regulations were made, banning the transfer of
meropahs and sokalniks to higher social ranks. By the beginning of
the 15th century, Serbian clergy gained enough strength to resist
weakening of the Serbian state and its ruin.
Protopriests were also secular parishes clargys with a
presbyter title, only they were bearers of a special eminence and
performed certain special functions. The first Serbian protopriests
were appointed by
Sava Nemanjić
and from the very beginning
there were two groups within this eminence. The protopriests of the
court had duties which included collecting church taxes. Protopriests
also performed the duties of permanent Episcopal vicars in cities
and squares, reducing the influence of Catholicism, monitoring the
work of parish priests and took upon themselves a part of the
Episcopal duties. The eminence of protopriests endured great
changes during the middle ages. The social position of protoparishes
was similar to that of parish priests.
The way of taxing church tributes that was established in the
Serbian church at the beginning of the 13th century represents a
complex system of tributes which were paid both by priests and
laymen. Vrhovina represents the tax which was paid by priests to the
bishop as a reflection of accepting his spiritual authority and it is a
permanent, annually determined tax. Besides that, priests gave
commemoration to the bishop or a gift which was arbitrary and

voluntary.
Bir
is a tax which was paid by laymen and collected by
priests and was also included in the Episcopal income. From the
Church point of view this was also a duty of the priest towards the
bishop, however it was not paid by the priest from his estate income,
but collected from the parishioners.
Priests in the medieval Serbia supported themselves from the
land and partly from the income of some church duties. They
received land to live on

ždreb,
from the nobleman landlord, as
their personal and provisional possession. The terms of inheriting it
are strictly determined, but the land itself can never be taken away
from the landlord. This provisional way of owning land included
duties towards the landlord. It was lawfully determined that the
landlord had to give
ždreb
to the priest, and the priest had duties
towards the landowner. They had to work in the landlord's vineyard,
give him wax and perform some other duties as well. They were free
from the major duties towards the state, however they had to pay
some others. The medieval sources also recognize the category of
the beneficiary priest. Those were the priests who had their own
land, and with that the features of noblemen. Beneficiary priests
(baštinici)
didn't have duties as landlords, however they probably
had some military duties like the other noblemen.
The priest's background was of crucial importance for his
social position. The priests coming from the noble class could not be
denied owning land or the rights granted by their noble background.
Those priests coming from the lower classes of society kept a lot of
features of those classes. That way the boundaries between the
social class of the clergy and the other two classes remained very
flexible.
The clergymen enjoyed a special reputation in the society,
based on performing church duties and their schooling. Their
freedom in performing clergy duties and liturgy could not be
affected by the civil authorities. Priests also had different personal
freedoms, such as greater freedom of movement or the above
mentioned tax reliefs. Civil laws rarely treat clergy as a separate
class, accept in the case of the most serious crimes (murder). Canon
law always demands from its

within its authority a greater
respect of the law then it does from laymen. The participation of

priest in
civil duties, especially as scribes or witnesses to contracts is
not a rare thing.
The basic duties of parish priests are liturgy and their duties in
the parish. The terms of literacy and knowledge of liturgy duties, as
well as moral qualities had to be considered during the election of
new parishes. Medieval sources show that the number of priests was
great compared to the number of citizens, and that there were
instances where authorities intervened to reduce the number of
priests. Also, the local community could not be split into too many
small pieces in order for each priest to get his own parish. So it is
more reliable to find parishes based on the data of the existence of
temples then on their parish priests.
Liturgy in the medieval church isn't very different from the
one today. Performing of the daily and yearly liturgies, holy secrets
and
molitîoslovanja(prayers)
were the basic duties of a parish in the
medieval Serbia too. Apart from that, in the middle age there was
much more attention on teaching, especially in the terms of giving
sermon after liturgy. Some eminent parish priests were the first
teachers, not only to the future priests, but also to the noblemen's
sons. In the conditions of medieval life, a parish priest was the
source of knowledge in the local community, the one who pointed
towards the life in accordance to the Christian principles. The role
and importance the clergy had in the medieval society represent one
of the basic features of this period of Serbian history.
