In this study, the authors offer evidence
.
Freedom Charter did not, as suggested by the
ANC
Youth League, call for nationalisation of the mines
and the commanding heights of the economy; that
government ownership of industries does not lead
to the high economic growth that South Africa
needs to reduce unemployment and poverty; and
that nationalisation has not produced good results
wherever it has been applied elsewhere in the
world. They offer alternative policy solutions that
have the potential to empower the poor and
increase employment; measures that will increase
economic growth without affecting the job security
of existing workers or imposing an impossible
burden on government budgets and taxpayers. And
finally, they provide evidence that black South
Africans have advanced exceptionally well in their
working lives since the abandonment of apartheid.
Temba A. Nolutshungu, the compiler, has been an
activist since his schooldays. In the struggle against
apartheid he was a black consciousness pioneer
and was instrumental, along with his comrades, in
establishing the Black Mamba Youth Movement in
the late
1960s,
which was dedicated to the
overthrow of the apartheid system. He was detained
twice in solitary confinement under the Terrorism
and General Law Amendment Acts. As a director of
the Free Market Foundation (FMF). Temba
continues to be a protagonist of individual liberty and
an opponent of authoritarian government. He works
along with his colleagues in the FMF to promote
and foster an open society, the rule of law. personal
liberty, and economic and press freedom as
fundamental components of its advocacy of human
rights and democracy based on classical liberal
principles .
