A BOLD HISTORY OF GRAND VISIONS
Throughout its history England s buildings
have reflected not only the taste of the people
who built them but the economic and social
attitudes of the times. Many buildings were also
expressions of power, faith or influence.
The Building of England takes us on a
fascinating tour through the history of English
architecture. From Saxon beginnings, through
the cathedrals and castles of the Middle Ages, to
the iron and glass architecture of the Industrial
Revolution and the sprawling suburbs of
metroland,
Simon Thurley shows us how building
on this small island came to be distinctly different
and how, by the nineteenth century, it had an
impact across the globe.

understand the history of English architecture
is to read the history of the nation. Well-known
buildings and styles are revealed to be part of
the fascinating and complex story of England.
Thurley shows how they reflect the beliefs, ideas
and aspirations of the people who commissioned

Simon Thurley
is a leading
architectural
historian and has
been the head of
English Heritage
since
2003.
Previously he ran
the Museum of
London and before
that was Curator
of the Historic
Royal Palaces.
He is Visiting Professor of the Built Environment at
Gresham
College and his books include
The Royal Palaces of Tudor England, Hampton Court
Palace:

Social and Architectural History and
Lost Buildings of Britain, He writes regularly for
the Financial Times, Country Life and other journals
and has presented many television programmes
including the Channel

series The Buildings That
Made Britain. He is an honorary member of the
Royal Institute of British Architects and the Royal
Institution of Chartered Surveyors and in
2013
was
awarded a CBE for services to heritage. He lives
in an 800-year-old house in Norfolk with his wife,
the historian Anna Keav, and their two children.
