Kralice na Hané.
Biritual
Burial Site of the Linear Pottery Culture.

In the years
2005
and
2006,
a research was performed at a biritual burial
site of the Linear Pottery Culture discovered in an industrial zone of the
town of
Prostějov,
in the cadastral area of
Kralice na Hané.
The outcomes
of the research were processed and evaluated as part of the scientific
research project supported by the Grant Agency of the Czech Republic,
No.
404/08/0414
(Šmíd
2012).
A mere remnant has been preserved of what used to be a biritual burial
site of the Linear Pottery Culture situated in
Kralice na Hané,
the origi¬
nal area of which is assumed to have been ten times larger. Nevertheless,
in the Central European context it is considered a historic site of unique
importance. It has allowed for the first more comprehensive view of the
development of the burial rite of the Linear Pottery Culture towards the
end of its later development stage, when the very first extramural burial
sites emerged in the Middle Danube region, but mainly in the course of
the following stage. At the same time, it may serve as a starting point or
an alternative when addressing the issue of an urgent lack of burial sites in
the following Neolithic periods and finally also the Early Eneolithic Age.
It has been stated that the settlement was found in a floodplain surroun¬
ding the local watercourse, on degenerated loess or clay soils with a high
groundwater level, i.e. at a locality where no such settlement had been
expected, all the more so that the floodplain is surrounded by loess soil
drifts on which a dense network of settlements dating back to the same
period has been found (Fig.
4).
The location of the settlement and the asso¬
ciated burial site in the inundation of the watercourse was a decisive factor
owing to which the site survived to this day. We assume that no significant
loss of soil occurred in the floodplain area, as has been the case in the
surrounding sloping terrains, even on the contrary. An analysis of grave
goods has revealed that the necropolis served for the burial of the deceased
starting at the end of stage Ib, i.e. at the end of stage I of the Linear Pottery
Culture, until the start of its stage III

the
Šárka
stage. From the beginning
(at the turn of stages Ha and Ib) until the end of stage
Ila
the burials had the
form of cremations as well as inhumation graves, and starting at stage lib,
cremation was the exclusive method of burial. It has been shown that the

degree of preservation of both these burial groups, especially the crema¬
tion type, has been substantially affected by the burial depth. The fact
that cremation graves were shallow is the main reason why no burial sites
have been found in loess drifts. The former extensive
nécropoles
are then
only indicated by groups of few inhumation graves
(Blatnice, Blučina,
Moravský Krumlov, Předmostí, Rybníky, Těšetice—Kyj o
vice, Vedrovice

as well as burnt
stone
tools, found on sites with no apparent settlement
traces. Insignificant differences in the values obtained from susceptibility
measurements of burnt and not burned shoe-last adzes somewhat cha¬
llenge our assumption that higher susceptibility of burnt stone artefacts
can be an indicator, or rather, one of the clues during the search for old
Neolithic burial sites. However, it is only a matter of time when cremation
burial sites will be discovered at other locations, mainly in areas where,
like in
Kralice na Hané,
the original soil cover has not been significantly
disturbed. Cremation graves of the Linear Pottery Culture in
Prostej
ov-
-Čechůvky
can serve as an example. They were uncovered in the site of
Kopaniny
under a thick cultural layer dating to the period of
Lusatian
Urnfìelds,
situated in the vicinity of a group of inhumation graves of the
Funnel-necked Beaker Culture.Therefore, they were considered a later
part of the same burial site. Cremation remains rested in shallow pits of
approx.
50
cm in diameter. It was only subsequently that a fragment of a
shoe-last adze was identified in one of the graves, excavated as a whole
(Šmíd
2011).
Clusters of pottery were detected in the surroundings of the
finding, only some of which have been saved from the excavator bucket.
The group of graves was situated
40 - 60
m
to the north of the group of
long houses of the Linear Pottery Culture, i.e. nearly identically with the
Kralice
Neolithicagglomeration.
The newly uncovered burial site with cremation graves in Polish Modl-
niczce near Krakow is only a proof that cremation of the deceased was
adopted during Linear Pottery Culture on the substantial part of its terri¬
tory and became more or less a general occurrence.
Kralice
and Vedrovice
nécropoles
are two of the oldest burial sites of the Linear Pottery Culture.
It has become apparent that cremation as a sophisticated form of burial had
been present since the very beginning of the existence of these burial sites.
