The historian of
Dubrovnik
and engaged intellectual,
Antun
(Antonije)
Vučetić
the most of his scientific work devoted
to the history of his native town of
Dubrovnik,
Already, during
his school days, he commenced with his archive explorations,
which were, by the end of his long and fruitful work, the source
of his historiographical studies and contributions. Old and signif¬
icant texts from the archives of
Dubrovnik
were published under
the title
Spomenici srpski
that is
Spomenici dubrovački,
while the
contributions to history and the cultural history of the ancient
Dubrovnik
were named
Sitnice iz dubrovačke prošlosti.
In addi¬
tion to that, his historiographical work was also made out of sev¬
eral general studies in which he mainly referred to the relations
between the Republic of
Dubrovnik
and other states
ofthat
time,
along with the position of the Republic in the Balkans and in the
Mediterranean,
In addition to his scientific engagements,
A. Vučetić
was
also engaged in other, for the time, a very important social and
cultural events in
Dubrovnik.
Long-term high school teacher in
Dubrovnik, Vučetić
was able to gain a nice reputation in the City,
following that to become an editor of literary journal
„Srđ
and
the head of the State Archives in
Dubrovnik,
and at the very end
of his life a founder of
Dubrovnik
learned society
„Sveti
Vlaho .
However, the work of
Antun Vučetić
as historian, scientist,
the leader and organizer of important institutions of
Dubrovnik,
was neglected and almost forgotten. In this way the huge mistake
was made, since the life and opus of
A Vučetić,
especially one
that took place ia important institutions of
Dubrovnik,
was an
indicative for understanding the epoch, namely the time of the

19th century and the first three decades of the 20th century. Also,
the appearance and work of this historian illustrated the activities
of Catholic Serbs in
Dubrovnik,
especially those who were not in
the forefront by their political activities, but they had defined,
thoroughly and truly, their personal and professional efforts
through the sense
ofthat
belonging.
