This study offers a major reconceptualization of the Canadian Gothic
tradition by tracing the ways the transplantation of the genre within a settler
context was marked by a distinctive mode of ambivalence. While early
Canadian writers expressed anxiety about the applicability of the British
Gothic tradition to a ‘New World’ context, they nevertheless turned to the
Gothic for its vitalizing rather than unsettling potential. Faced with the
tensions implicit in the challenge of cultural and historical legitimation,
Canadian writers embraced the genre for purposes of national self-invention
by creating homemade legends that provided an illusion of origin and
memory ֊ an approach by which the strange would become comforting.
After charting this history of Gothic infusion, Canadian Gothic turns its
attention to the body of Aboriginal and diasporic writings that respond to
this discourse of national self-invention from a postcolonial perspective.
These counter-narratives unsettle the naturalizing force of this invented
history, rendering the sense of Gothic comfort newly strange.______________
