been derived from the second page (headed ‘Old forms of Mss Lectures’), of a four-page manuscript entitled
‘Comparative Study of the Constitution: List of Papers etc’ Dicey Papers, All Souls College, Oxford, Codrington
Library, MS 323 (see Editors Introduction, pp xvii f. below). On that page, the Introduction and chapters 1, 4, 5,
6 and 9 were dated May 1897, chapter 2 was dated June 1897, chapter 3 was not dated, and chapters 7 and 8 were
dated July 1898 and August 1898 respectively Most of the original lecture manuscripts were also dated and, if so,
their dates have been footnoted at the start of chapters. These dates are the dates when lecture texts were first writ-
ten, rewritten, or re-used.
^ Part IPs title, the chapter/lecture headings (excluding the Introduction), and their sequence have been derived
from a manuscript lecture schedule headed ‘Easter Trinity Terms 1900: Comparative Study of Constitutions’,
Dicey Papers, All Souls College, Oxford, Codrington Library, MS 323 (see Editor s Introduction, pp xvii f. below).
In later manuscript notes, the schedule was recorded as a ‘New Series’, and ‘written 1900’ was added beneath the
titles to chapters/lectures 1, 2, 3, and 5, marking those lectures that had been written out in full. Dates written on
the original manuscripts of lecture texts and analyses have been footnoted at the start of chapters.
