he present book deals with the activity of the Ljubljana Opera during
World War II, i.e. between the years
1941
and
1945.
In spite of difficult conditions, the opera house continued to stage
performances during all this time. However, the management had to take
into consideration the curfew regulations and therefore needed to adjust the
starting time of the performances. Obviously, all
ofthat
did not influence the
audience, as the attendance increased by
25
percent as compared to the time
before the war. The management was even forced to add additional season
tickets, as the spectators complained that they were not able to get tickets.
Ljubljana and its surroundings were occupied by Italy in the first days of
April
1941.
After the surrender of the Italian forces in September
1943,
the
occupation was extended by the German army until
9
May
1945.
However,
neither of the occupying authorities interfered with the programming of
operas, operettas and ballets. Together with the standard Italian and German
repertoire (Verdi, Rossini, Mozart, Wagner), French and Slavic composers were
part of the programme throughout all this time.
During the four theatre seasons, there were numerous world premieres of
works by Slovenian composers
(Janko Gregore,
Janez Dobeic,
Hugolin
Sattner,
Samo Hubad),
mostly operettas and ballets. Some works of other composers
(Gluck,
Mascagni,
Petri,
Ricci,
Lehár,
Dostal, Mozart,
Grieg and Ravel) were
also included in the programme for the first time. During the war period, there
were altogether
60
premieres of operas and operettas as well as

shorter
ballets.
The management devoted a lot of attention to attracting young artists with
singing competitions in
1941
and
1942
and the opening of an opera studio in
1942.
There were also auditions for chorus singers, while in
1944,
the opera
house opened an opera ballet school in order to raise new generations of ballet
dancers. In the last war season
1944-45,
the opera house had three permanent
conductors, three directors, two choreographers,

opera and
4
ballet soloists,

chorus members,
22
members of the corps-de-ballet and
61
musicians
within the orchestra.
All of this bears witness to a lively cultural life of the music theatre, which
did not join the so-called »cultural silence« that had been dictated by the
Yugoslav Communist Party in
1942.
The latter s supreme authority decided not

to include the theatre in this instruction, as they were frightened that too many
people would lose their jobs and that the occupation forces could take over the
Slovenian theatre. In spite
ofthat,
after the end of the war, in July
1945,
some
of the leading opera and dramatic artists were arrested. They were sentenced
to forced labour, confiscation of their property and loss of their civil rights.
Nevertheless, most of them were soon able to return to work, as already in
August
1945
an amnesty was declared for all the persons collaborating with the
occupation forces in the cultural domain.
After the war, life returned to normality very slowly. However, the activity
of the
Ljubljana
Opera could not match the pre-war and war periods. The
number of new productions soon diminished only to a third. In the first
decades, this was compensated by a higher number of season tickets, but in the
1980s
the number of visitors decreased again.
We can therefore describe the World War II period as one of the more
prosperous times for the Ljubljana opera house, alongside with the pre-war
seasons in the
1930s.
