Abstract
In the 19th century, the symphony began to dominate musical endeavours. Within it
the basic aesthetic imperatives of the time were sharpened, with a network of various
poetic principles being built from it and a hierarchy of normative values defined. The
most typical compositional demands of the time were reflected and aroused by the
symphony as the central genre of the period. The nineteenth-century symphony was
born out of the dilemma of defining musical autonomy, now conceived as a worship
of the musical genius of its creator instead of its previous symbolic magnification of
the glamour of the court. The number of works does not likely exceed those written
in last magnificent decades of the 18th century, when the genre was established as an
outstanding reflection of a relaxed enthusiasm over collective instrumental music ma¬
king. However, the meaning of the symphony fundamentally changed to now repre¬
senting a weighty, glorious, sophisticated monument raised in the eternal memory of
the triumph of the composer s genius. The structure of the symphony now sought for
undreamed-of dimensions of an extremely calculated complex and multi-layered ro¬
unded form based on broad intellectual, even philosophically founded, argumentation.
The present book can offer only a very narrow selection of some of the most im¬
portant works from the nearly unmanageable treasure of symphonic compositions
from the 19th century. Formerly, a drought
ofinformation
prevented a broad view
into historical horizons, not only into the marginal but also into the most powerful
cultural centers. In contrast, the current flood of information rolls over all shores
such that the plethora of data drowns our knowledge in an endless ocean where
it is even difficult to find the strongest maelstroms, let alone perceive the main
streams in their direction and strength.
The text offers a general introduction to a number of complex issues. It attempts to
be thoughtful with regard to some of the often under-explored, if not completely
neglected, factors in the cultural environment and praxis. Such is addressed prima¬
rily in the second part of the book, being dedicated to some of the national and re¬
gional compositional schools
-
their representatives and most relevant works
-
that
traditionally have been only sporadically mentioned. Hence, the text focuses on the
individual features of specific milieus and on the definitive relevant characteristics
of their cultural development. Furthermore, elements of the general characteristics
of spirit of the time are discussed within the context of concrete works.The reader
can then follow the outline of the historic-cultural image of a particular environ¬
ment with its idiosyncratic spiritual condition and intellectual stimulus while also
finding the autonomous characteristics of individual compositional poetics and
specific features of concrete musical works as revealed by structural analysis. For

that reason the text is enriched by numerous musical examples that serve as deta¬
iled characterizations of a composer s procedure or individual approach. The latter
is revealed through a narrow hermeneutical space as well as with the help of the
semiotic
chase of secret clues, signals, and signs, and from forms set in motion
by sound

crystallized by a pure structural analysis.
The first part of the book focuses more on the general characteristic of the symphony
in the 19th century. We seek to answer to some broad questions raised from con¬
fronting the symphony as a genre so quickly established with its public and creators.
Comparing the contemporaneous world of opera with the symphony, it becomes cle¬
ar how the latter turns the characteristics of the former upside-down with respect to
the reception and interpretation of music. At the same time, the connections of the
symphony to the rich tradition of the 18th century are discussed. As maybe presumed,
we do not overlook the distinctive division between the advocates of programma¬
tic and absolute music, between illustrative meaning and formalistic non-conceptual
sense, or between the outer-musical and the pure musical world. Although such
distinctions may seem to be completely fruitless and senseless today, these divisions
represent one of the most influential and powerful struggles in the history of music.
It alone accounts for rancorous aesthetically founded attacks that then had a marked
consequent productive impact on the development of the symphony. At the same
time, the text logically offers a reflection on the conditions of the autonomy of musical
language, its aesthetical referential system, and symbolic signs and meanings. In this
context, it approaches the question of the identity of a musical work, the meaning of
progress as an aesthetic category, the establishment of the concert hall as an artistic
temple, the restoration of the conductor s authority, etc. The book also outlines the
main characteristic features and historical borders of romanticism. While such a mat¬
ter might be seen at first sight as purely terminological, it indeed opens to discussion a
number of issues fundamental and essential to the context and present understanding
of music in the 19th century. The book attempts to resolve all of these most general
questions of the time by their seemingly paradoxical juxtaposition with individual
compositions, an understanding derived from the interpretation of concrete works
and their connection to the fate of the most relevant composers.
The general treatment of the period is thus developed from individual stories, whi¬
ch are then integrated vice-versa into a general view

receiving their meaning and
sense through the broader image.
The book is intended for all who want to deepen their knowledge of the topics co¬
vered. At the same time, it looks for its reader among all music lovers, those deligh¬
ted and inspired by music

the latter also being the main reason for its conception.
