XIX-XX Centuries
The research project entitled „From repairs to Silver Restoration of Cultural Property .
Century
XIX -
XX is an important step in an effort to explain why restoration is a science
and implicitly mobile heritage restoration involves besides knowledge of chemistry,
physics, and mechanical biology

knowledge of history. This is not a job, from the
contrary, beginning with the place where the activity carries on (laboratories equiped
with more and more sophisticated equipment), continuing with specialists operating
here and the knowledge they have. I can say that, restoration it s an entire engineering,
too little known, and the results of it helped historical research over the years. If the last
century conservation and restoration of national heritage were presented in passing
in the auxiliary sciences courses in the faculties of history, today they are independent
specializations within the same university and beyond.
Why restoration of the mobile heritage from silver? Any material I would have chosen,
would be appropriate for a scientific approach of restoration, because those themes
of research at academic standards in this area are only just beginning, and diversity
of the silver objects found in our cultural heritage is low, both civil and religious ones,
and over time they have had a spectacular development and evolution.
When we decided to approach this research, I realized, as I said, that is somewhat
virgin and practical topic from the standpoint of cultural restoration of silver as inde¬
pendent subject was not approached. The time of the technologic restorer, which
deals only with the problem

the object presented, passed. We are in an era when
the object is viewed unitary, historycal, technology, saving indefinitely. All this makes
the subject, wherever it is, unique.
Period aproached in this research is that of the

th and
20
th centuries, and as
territory it would be researched the south of the Carpathians because for a research
of the whole Romanian space takes long time, impossible to cover in the limited
period of research. According to the map from

In the first chapter of the research „The history of processing silver in the Romanian
space or other areas (from prehistory to modern times) ,

have considered necessary a
brief overview of traditions in this field of silver crafting. Silver objects found in various
archaeological excavations dating back to antiquity are found in all museums in the
country.
To release the secrets of restoration, I have made a brief overview about the manufac-

turing of
silver,
in the second chapter entitled „Processing of the silver in the Romanian
Country and its importance in history art , and here I didn t left a side the evolution of
forms of organization of craftsmen
-
from the first workshops, continuing with guilds
and associations and federations, cooperative type from the socialist age (INCOOP
-
National Institute of cooperatives, UCECOM
-
Union Consumer cooperatives).
To argue that fact that the craftsmen have high

level creative act of art,

From the category of master
craftsmen and silversmiths are Gypsies or Roma or
„zlătarii .
I made a brief history of
them. I m focusing more on socialist and post
-
socialist period, the influences that
have gone on the crafting in the Romanian Country. This brief presentation was made
on the basis of literature, but also
і
have spoken with some masters from the areas
Giurgiu
and Bucharest.
Methodology of decoration objects is different from one age to another, from one
category of masters to the other masters, but to get to the final object, the metal passed
through standard steps of processing: hammering, flat terrain, polishing, polishing,
engraving, marking, casting, gilding, glueing, electroplating. Marking must not be
forgotten, cause specifies the purity and quality of the metal, and thrue this the object
from silver contains truthfull information. This applies in

such as jewelry, ornaments and jewels.
The fourth chapter

„Distinction between craftsman-restoration is a journey into
the evolution of restoration mobile heritage and restorations of objects made from
silver, with a relatively small length but with
ups
and downs. Legislative gaps also had
their importance, and that is why I introduced legislation to Annex,
wich
is the base of
the
metalic
restoration activity. I have also considered important including the industry
associations (ATRC
-
Transylvanian Association of Restorers and Conservators, ACCRO
-
National Association of Conservators and Restorers of Romania,
ECCO
-
the European
Confederation of Conservator
-
Restorers Organizations).
In chapter „Repair or restoration of cultural metal assets are detailed all the problems
the restorer faces when the artifact reaches laboratory/workshop and on their work
table, starting from technological investigations and finishing with the technologic
flux applied different according to the problem you have. Investigations for the mobile
heritage are allways undestructive, while for the metal material ones, the frequent
method knowned is the one with FT-IR. Regarding the technological flux, which I tried
to point out, was that each artifact has its problems and the methods of restoration are
its salvation for endless periods of time. Restoration work is proceeding according to

in dedicated facilities: laboratories or workshops. In this chapter I

The last chapter entitled „Modern methods of restoration of movable cultural pro¬
perty from silver It s one of the restoration technology. In addition to the unabridged
restoration methods depending on the source artifact, depending on its conservation
status, I thought it fitting to introduce and restoration of artifacts from other museums,
in addition to those
і
have restored, among time in different laboratories through the
country.
Since the beginning of this scientific approach I followed two directions: theoreti¬
cal (based on documents from the National Archives, articles of journals, Archives of
the laboratories) and other practical (including a rich video and photo material). If in
the common language the restorer it s the doctor of the inheritance, his presence
is felted by the objects he saves. Although the field is new, it s kinda old, cause man
with innovative spirit and enterprising spirit repaired . What is the difference? Repair
or restore? There were questions on
wich

have tried to answer in this thesis through
many arguments regarding restoration as a sience.
Restoring metal objects developed concurrently with restoration of ceramic, imposed
both by archaeological discoveries and technological flow methodology. In the early
60s
there were the basics of restoration of metal restoration trough the clujan group
led by Joseph Korody, in the late-twentieth century we can already speak of a scientific
restoration based on a theory of restoration, on the equipment in the field of restoration
wich
parents of restoration in Romania could only dreamed about.
Hoping that this research is a brick added to the protecting cultural heritage
Romanian, consider this topic inexhaustible as long as, there are still in the land of the
country inventories
wich
were not taken in daylight and as long as we have a history
and culture rich.
At the end of this research I would like to point out that this adventure of finding the
stiver mirrage began over
15
years ago, when I first entered a restoration laboratory.
Later, when on the working table reached silver cultural goods that were part of Buzau
County Museum and inventory that were to be part of the Treasury department of the
same museum, the idea of a foray into my silverware widened and over the passing years
I realized a few studies on this topic, but not at the same level in terms of documentary.
I felt it necessary to add a glossary of specific terms. Annexes include actually more
practical side: the Object Catalogue, Case Study, Restoration of silver artifacts, century.
VI, Virginia County Museum, Golden Hands video material; Rehabilitation metal and
ceramic restoration laboratory of the Museum of Bucharest, legislation. At the end of
the thesis I present bibliography.
