Abstract
We believe that this book is of real help both to the sociological research that
focuses on religiousness in Romanians and especially to the field of social welfare in
Romania. In our scientific approach we also pondered upon a very important issue
relative to the Romanians religiosity, namely the Church s presence in the public space,
and more precisely, in public organizations who operate in social work (child
protection). Several sociological studies have been conducted in Romania relative to the
Romanians religious affiliation, their values, their confidence in institutions, the
Church s presence in the public arena, etc., yet we know of no studies about the
Church s presence in an institution (such as the Directorate General for Social Work
and Child Protection
-
DGASPC) or about the religious orientation of the employees
working in social work establishments. This may lead to other research on themes
similar to the one we have just mentioned, which could provide important outcomes for
sociological research focusing on the Romanians religiousness and values. However, in
what regards the relationship between public social welfare and church-provided social
care, research itself is very important, as it takes into account the quality of life in
Romania. Their low standard of living and the issues related to their family lives make
the life of Romanians very unstable. In this context, the Church plays an important role
in Romanian social welfare, and our research, which also takes into account the national
Romanian culture, shows the links between the Church and the public welfare system in
Romania.
Our study is divided into two main parts: a theoretical and a practical one. The
contents of this book are structured as follows:
1.
A theoretical part relative to the sociology of religion;
2.
A theoretical part relative to religiosity;
3.
An informative part relative to the Church s social mission as well as to child
protection in Romania;
4.
Research A, at the national level: the relationship between the local Church and
DGASPC;
5.
Research B, at the regional, county level: a quantitative study on the religious
orientation of the people employed by DGASPC CS.
The sociological theoretical part is detailed in Chapter I of this book, titled:
Classic and contemporary approaches in the exploration of the religious phenomenon;
the chapter encompasses the exposition of several theories put forth by sociologists in
the history of this science, and analyses them in relationship with religion. In this
chapter we discuss various definitions given to religion, and we treat scientifically the
fact that most sociologists see religion as a social phenomenon; finally, it is in this
chapter that we also analyse the relationship between religion and social involvement in

society. The bibliography of this chapter includes the great classical sociologists as well
as contemporary scholars.
The second chapter sets the theoretical grounds relative to religiosity in
relation to our research topic, so it bears the title: Religiosity and contemporary social
welfare. Here we have approached religiosity in general. We drew a parallel between
secularisation and religiousness in today s Europe then we discussed Romania s case in
order to analyse the Romanians religious behaviour; the final part of the second chapter
focuses on an analysis of the relationship between religion and its presence in the local
public space, with a particular interest in its presence in social services.
The theoretical part on social welfare (the field of child protection), as well as
the informative part on the Church, are presented in Chapter III and Chapter IV. We
focus on child protection and illustrate the dynamics of the evolution of this societal
openness with statistical data displayed in various graphs, analyses relative to the field
of child protection and its development in post-1990 Romania; one of our sources is the
website of the National Authority for the Protection of Child Rights. Also, we presented
in an informative form the Romanian national social welfare system. The chapters also
include a summary description of the Church s social mission.
The national-wide research: the relationship between the local Church and
DGASPC is presented in Chapter V entitled The relationship between DGASPC and the
Church in Romania, subchapter A study on the complementariness of the Church and
the state in the field of Romanian child protection service (at the national level). This
subchapter is a qualitative study that involves data collected through a psycho-social
investigation conducted in all the

DGASPC units in the country

counties and

sectors of the capital city). We should mention the high proportion of positive answers,
significantly higher than in the psycho-sociological studies conducted in the period
2000-2010,
in which response rates were seldom higher than 20%-30%. In the case of
our research, this ratio is very high: almost all the DGASPCs in the country sent us
official and customised answers; only three DGASPCs were contacted by phone and
provided an answer through this means of communication.
The regional, county-wide research. A quantitative research on the religious
orientation of the people working in DGASPC CS is also presented in Chapter V, in the
subchapter Religiosity, relational patterns and community involvement at the level of a
specific county unit (DGASPC CS). This subchapter is a quantitative study which aims
to analyse within the inner workings of a county unit the trends highlighted by the
previous national-wide study. This study involved the employees of the DGASPC of
Caraş-Severin
County, on a sample of

respondents. They had to answer a
questionnaire designed starting from three main themes relative to the religious
orientation of social service employees. These are: the assessment scale of non-formal
community involvement, designed sui-generis, and made up of

items, on a scale from
0
( not at all ) to
5
( to a great extent ) which describe various actions that focus on the
subject s involvement in a series of tasks which do not involve the explicit requirements
of their job descriptions; these actions highlight the employees availability to help
people in need in their spare time; the assessment scale of perceived social support,
created by Zimet
(1990
and
2000), Dahlem, Zimet
and Farley
(1988),
which measures
the degree of social support provided to a person by their significant other within the

routine
relational
patterns developed in their biographical experience. The scale
comprises statements assessed on a 7-step Lickert scale, from strongly disagree
(1)
to
strongly agree
(7);
the assessment scale of religious orientation
(Allport,
Ross,
1967),
which evaluates the subjects religious orientation. This instrument discriminates
between two types of religious orientation: intrinsic or extrinsic.
The results confirm the significant level of social involvement among the
employees of this particular organisation as well as the fact that community
involvement is strengthened by religious orientation, which becomes a significant
predictor variable for the subjects relational mobilization.
