marked the hundredth anniversary of the death of JUDr.
Václav
Count of Kounice, one of the most distinguished
personalities of political life in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy at the end of the nineteenth century and a man who had an immeasurable
influence on public and social life in the
Uherský Brod
area. His life and work were continually confronted with the complex plotlines
of the period of imminent
démocratisation,
nationalisation and social radicalisation of society at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth
centuries. His endeavours were continually reflected against the backdrop of these developments as the image of a man and active
politician who was not indifferent to the interests of the broadest classes of humanity. Although
Václav
of Kounice himself came from
an ancient aristocratic family, he was one of the few of his class to give precedence to integration into the newly forming civic society,
for which he did not hesitate to use his position and influence, over the exclusivity of life among the privileged aristocracy. His political
activity in the years
1883-1897
in particular is a reflection of his social thinking and his tendency towards a more socially just society
in which the principles of justice and equality in the rights and obligations of its citizens would be asserted more emphatically and act as
a guarantee of the free development of the Czech nation and a basis for its civic freedoms.
JUDr.
Václav
Count of Kounice came from the Czech line of an ancient Moravian aristocratic family. He was a Member of
the Czech Provincial Assembly and Imperial Council; from
1897
onwards he owned the
Slavkov
and
Uherský Brod
seigniorial estate.
He was born in Dresden on
26
September
1848
as the tenth and final child of Michael
Karel
of Kounice
(1803-1852)
and
Eleonora,
née
Voračická
of
Paběmce
and
Bissingen
(1809-1898).
He studied law at the Charles-Ferdinand University in Prague, where he obtained the
title of doctor of law in
1873.
From an early age, under the influence of his mother and his teacher Ferdinand
Schulz,
he inclined towards
the Czech national movement. After his studies, he engaged actively in politics as an adherent of Czech nationalism, and in
1877
married
a woman from the citizenry- the actress
Josefina
Čermáková
( 1849-1895),
daughter of the goldsmith Jan Jin
Čermák
and his wife Klotilda.
In
1883,
he was elected Member of the Provincial Assembly for the Landowners Party. In order to better support the Czech national
movement and socially weaker sections of the population, he became Provincial People s Member for the
Slaný-Kladno
constituency in
1887
as a supporter of the Czech Liberal Party. In
1885
and
1891,
he was elected Member of me Imperial Council, where he again supported the
political interests of the Czech nation. In the years
1873-1895,
he surrounded himself with a group of Czech-thinking intellectuals and artists at
his home in
Vysoká
u
Příbrami.
Visitors to
Vysoká
included such distinguished names as
Ladislav Stroupežnický,
literary manager at the
National Theatre, the novelist, dramatist and poet Julius
Zeyer,
writer and Catholic priest
Václav Beneš-Třebizský,
chairman of the
physical exercise organisation
Sokol
prof. dr.
Miroslav Tyrš
and many others. The well-known political figures to visit were largely
members of the Czech Liberal Party.
After the death of his first wife and his brother
Albrecht
of Kounice
(1829-1897)
he gave up his political work and took over the
administration of the fideicommissum family estates in
Slavkov
and
Uherský Brod
in Moravia. Over the course of time,
Václav
of Kounice
grew to love the
Uherský Brod
area, where he took over the administration of his estates at the same time as in
Slavkov.
Kounice s first short
visits to
Uherský Brod
came at the end of the eighteen nineties, at a time at which
Uherský Brod
town council was taken over by a purely
Czech administration, which asserted its public plans for the further development of
Uherský Brod,
following the elections of
1890.
The
Czech-oriented town council endeavoured
-
following several decades of German administration of the town
-
not merely to achieve an
economic and business revival, but first and foremost to arouse a Czech national consciousness by supporting Czech patriotic organisations.
It also endeavoured to establish a Czech educational system in the town. With the help and dedicated work of many local Revivalists and
teachers,
Uherský Brod
began to resemble a Czech town with a rich history and popular culture at the end of the nineteenth century.
These noble endeavours and the immense enthusiasm of the new administration of the town came to a climax at the time of
Kounice s arrival in
Uherský Brod. Václav
of Kounice was already so well-known for his attitudes and opinions before his arrival in the
town that the members of the town council and the administration of the estate welcomed him unreservedly with open arms as the new
owner of the estate. As
Václav
of Kounice was far from indifferent to the awakening national efforts in the town and the surrounding
area, he became familiar with the leading figures in
Uherský Brod
at that time during his first few visits, and the new owner soon
became acquainted with the mayor of the town, Imperial and Provincial Member
Ignát Seichert
(mayor in the years
1897-1900),

Jan Parobek,

His circle of friends was not, however, limited merely to
Uherský Brod,
as Kounice also found a number of friends during his
ever more frequent travels around the surrounding area. His most notable acquaintances in South Moravia included the popular painters
Joža
Uprka and Cyril
Mandel
and the architect of
Slovakien
descent
Dušan Jurkovič. Václav
of Kounice spent more and more time in
Moravia, where his closest friend in artistic circles remained the painter Josef
Kiír,
alongside Uprka,
Mandel
and
Jurkovič.
On one of his first visits to the
Uherský Brod
estate, he met
Josefina Horová(l
881-1961)
who was to become his partner of many
years and later his second wife. She came from the small town of
Zinkový u Nepomuku
in the Bohemian Forest area. She was born to the
family of the carpenter
Vojtěch Hora
and his wife
Barbora.
She came to
Uherský Brod
as housekeeper to her aunt
Barbora,
wife of the seigniorial clerk at
Panský Dům.
From
1902,
she worked as provisional accounts comptroller at the Kounice estate in
Uherský Brod.
Kounice himself, aware of his relationship with
Josefina,
entered into marriage with her in Prague after long acquaintance on

May
1908.
The newlyweds settled at
Obora
Chateau in the district of Drslavice not far from
Uherský Brod,
known among the old inhabitants as
Pepčín ,
which had recently been built (in the years
1902-1905).
Here, as in
Vysoká u Příbrami
in the past,
Václav
of Kounice established
a circle of friends with his second wife and they devoted themselves to educational work. The culmination of their work consisted of help
for poor students, for whom they established the Kounice Student Halls of Residence Foundation, for which they donated house no.

in Bmo, as he fell seriously ill after a visit to Krakow and died on

1913

Panský Dum

Mourning for the respected Count was held in
Uherský Brod
on
17
October
1913.
His burial was held in the presence of his family and the
public in
Malvazinky
in Prague on Sunday
19
October of the same year.
