The main purpose of the thesis is to present the quantity, positioning and structure of
the landed estates and gentry
Ín
the western part of
Galicia
in the second half of the
19th century, which was the period of tempestuous political, economic and social trans¬
formations taking place over the whole
Habsburg
Monarchy territory. The Spring of
Nations as well as the consequent reforms introduced, especially the affranchisement
of the peasantry, caused not only the necessity to rebuild the Austrian regime, but also
had great affect upon the transformations within the landlords group.
The research that covered the years
1848—1855,
i.e. the times of realization of the
affranchisement reform in
Galicia,
presents quite a stable picture of the estate prop¬
erty and the landed gentry in West
Galicia,
although a few interesting phenomena can
be observed.
Above all, there were certain regional differences as far as the landed estates struc¬
ture is concerned. Namely, there were

landed estates in West
Galicia
and a pre¬
dominant number of them were a private property. The percentage of the national,
church, municipal and institutional property was low and did not exceed
10%.
The
Cracow district was exceptional in that the demesne constituted
54,35%
of the general
number of estates. At the same time a large quantity of church and post-Partition land¬
ed property was situated in that district (e.g.

church property were located in
the area of the previous Republic of Cracow).
The thing to consider here is the question why the legal structure of the landed
property in the Cracow district was so much different from what one may observe in
the other six
çyrkuls
(administrative areas) of West
Galicia.
The answer lies in the analy¬
sis of the internal politics of the Austrian government. It is common knowledge that,
having taken over the south-eastern border areas of the Polish Republic in
1772,
the
Austrian government also took over all of the Crown lands. Moreover, during the Jose-
phinism period as well as at the beginning of the 19th century, a majority of the monas¬
tic property was taken over. After the end of the Napoleonic Wars the Partition author¬
ities, seeking the ways of refilling reduced treasury, conducted a wide-spread campaign

of selling the national landed property. The results of the above mentioned actions
were as follows: if in ca.
1772
there were above
300
Crown localities in the southern
parts of the Cracow and
Sandomierz
voivodeships
—
which equalled the territory of
Galicia s western cyrkuls
—
then in the years
1848-1855
only
59
were left (the Barcice,
Niepołomice
and
Wiśniowa dominium).
The history of the church and Crown landed property in the old Republic of Cra¬
cow was different. The Cracow localities on the left side of the Vistula river were first
found under the Austrian rule in the years
1795—1809.
During that time the Partition
government took over the Crown landed property and turned to take over the church
estates. However, these action were cancelled in
1809.
During the Duchy of Warsaw pe¬
riod, the old Crown landed property and some of the church estates were incorporated
into the national property. They maintained that status for the Republic of Cracow pe¬
riod, however after the Free City of Cracow annexed
Galicia,
they were incorporated
into the demesne.
As a matter of fact then, the ownership structure of the landed property in the
Cracow district reflected the status prevailing at the end of the

8th century.
While characterising the land ownership structure in West
Galicia,
two more ques¬
tions are worth noticing. Firstly, institutional property was poorly represented in the
second half of the 19th century. Excluding the hospital and school foundations from
which mostly small parts of villages or towns benefited, only three private foundations
with greater estates were recorded
(Zakład Narodowy im. Ossolińskich
(the
National Os¬
soliński
Institute),
Fundacja Dydyńskich
{the
Dy
dynskì
Foundation) and Zakład Funduszowy
Rolmana i
Hallera
(the
Raiman
and Haller
Found Institute). Secondly, small landed estates
and partial ownership was prevailing in the whole western part of
Galicia.
Almost
70%
of the landed property fell into those two property categories. That was the evidence of
the great fragmentation of the landed property. Moreover, the author was able to sin¬
gle out the occurrence of a continuous area of partial ownership, stretching from the
west towards the east along the borders of the
Wadowice cyrkuł
and the Cracow district,
as well as the
Bochnia, Sącz, Tarnów
and
Jasio cyrkuL·.
One should notice at this point
that the defined area of partial ownership of villages corresponded with the territory of
the petty nobility concentration at the end of the 18th century (the
Sącz
concentration).
In the middle of the 19th century there were
2315
landowners in general in seven
districts of the West
Galicia
and the vast majority of them were private persons
(1843).
Defining the group of private landowners one should notice that the group was quite
stable but also internally very diverse. Most of the private landholders were aristocrats
and nobles. However those two social-professional groups were not homogenous from
the financial point of view. It seems that people holding aristocratic titles could possess
the largest estates, but also the smallest, partially owned landed property. The estates
of

aristocrats were partial ownerships,

aristocrats owned grand landed estates. In case of the nobles, the
proportion was opposite:

While characterising the internal structure of the private landowners group, one
should state that the majority of the estates belonged to Polish nobles and aristocracy.
The events of entering the landholders group by persons from other cultural circles
were rare at the time. Most of such people were Jews, but they generally acquired small
parts of villages or towns. Greater estates were sometimes passed to people descending
from German, Austrian or Czech aristocracy, but this was mainly connected with the
sale of the Crown lands.
The analysis of the so far coHected source materials allows to notice a very interest¬
ing phenomenon concerning the land property trade. Namely, in the years
1848—1855
the negative consequences of the Galician Slaughter were quite noticeable. It is general¬
ly known that during the bloody events of February,
1846,
many landowners were mur¬
dered, especially in the
Sącz, Jasio, Tarnów
and
Bochnia cyrku/s.
It turns out the legal is¬
sues concerning taking over the estates by their descendants lasted for years. As a rule,
however, the estates were inherited by the closest relations (children, spouses); there
were no cases of the land being passed into the hands of outsiders.
