I Have Always Proudly Claimed
My Allegiance to the Academy of Sciences
Prof. Ing. Rudolf
Zahradník,
DrSc.
(* 1920),
is a Czech
physical chemist who was the president of the Academy
of Sciences of the Czech Republic
(1993-2001).
He is
one of the founders of the Learned Society of the Czech
Republic, whose first president he was
(1994-1997).
He
is credited with the transformation of the Academy of
Sciences at the time when numerous institutes had to
be closed; he faced various pressures to dissolve the en¬
tire Academy. In the interview, he considers the Acade¬
my of Sciences as an excellent research institution and
highly appreciates the emergence of a new generation
of young scientists.
The Greatest Discovery Is Still Ahead of Us
The chemist Prof. Ing. Pavel Hobza, DrSc.
(* 1946),
is the most cited Czech scientist; his discovery of the
so-called improper hydrogen bond has rewritten chem¬
istry textbooks. After the first publication, however,
it took almost twenty years for the discovery to be re¬
cognised. He illustrates on this personal experience
that besides being gifted, a scientist must exert great
patience.
He has devoted his entire life to quantum and com¬
putational chemistry. In science, he attributes a signi¬
ficant role to luck, which has been on his side many
times
-
for instance when he in the
1970s
learnt by
accident that
Poldi Kladno
had purchased an unprece-
dentedly powerful computer. It was precisely the com¬
puter that scientists needed for quantum and compu¬
tational chemistry and on which they could work at
night. He is a member of he Learned Society of the CR.

One Is Inspired by an Important Idea
Only Once or Twice in a Lifetime
Prof. Ing.
Armin
Delong, DrSc.
(* 1925),
laid the foun¬
dations for electronic microscopy in former Czechoslo¬
vakia. He is the first laureate of the Czech Head national
award
(2005).
When
Armin
Delong was a boy, his father bought
him an electronic kit and thus determined his fate. He
dedicated his life to optical devices. For the first tabletop
microscope, he was awarded a gold medal at the Brus¬
sels World's Fair in
1958.
He considers the development
of microscopes to be exciting. He has always tried to
make sure that his devices found practical application
in industry or medicine as soon as possible.
Through his efforts, Brno has become one the
world's leading centres of electron microscopy. Profes¬
sor Delong stood at the birth of the three companies
which after the Velvet Revolution in November
1989
emerged when
Tesla
Brno had been closed
—
Tescan,
FEI
Company and Delong Instruments. Nowadays, mi¬
croscopes are exported to the whole world from there.
The scientist visits the last-mentioned company, bear¬
ing his name, even now, at the age of
88.
His team has
been working on the development of an entirely new,
unique device that will be able to show
DNA.
I Enjoy Risk
—
It Keeps Me on the Move
The molecular biologist Prof. RNDr. Julius
Lukeš, CSc.
(* 1963),
won recognition in the parasitological com¬
munity through his oftentimes very original and bold
approach to trypanosome research. Many genes of this
tropical protozoan being resolved by
Lukeš's
team as
well as other researchers in the world have their paral¬
lels in all living organisms, and their knowledge may
322
HVĚZDY VĚDECKÉHO NEBE
thus contribute to understanding also the human ge¬
nome.
Already at the age of
41,
he became a member of the
Learned Society of the CR, at
43
a professor. He re¬
ceived the prestigious award of the AS CR Praemium
Academiae
(2009)
and at the age of
49
he became di¬
rector of the Institute of
Parasitology
of the Biology
Centre of the AS CR.
In the Beginning Was the Pineal Gland
Prof. RNDr. Helena
Illnerová, DrSc.
(* 1937),
is the
first woman to have become the president of the Aca¬
demy of Sciences of the CR but also to have been the
head of such an institution in the world. She assumed
her role with consistency and single-mindedness char¬
acteristic of her, although some people first doubted
that she would manage that, as she remembers in the
interview. The petite woman had been endowed with
vitality, which made it possible for her to succeed in
cutting-edge science without neglecting her family in
any manner. On the contrary, besides educating her
two children, she led a hiking club
—
a secret Girl Scout
troop, because scouting had been forbidden by Com¬
munists. Precisely the support of young people in
science (e.g. the
Otto Wichterle
Award) became one
of her great merits in the position of the president
of the Academy of Sciences.
Even though her more experienced colleagues tried
to dissuade her from conducting research on this topic,
she had been captivated by the pineal gland, which was
excellent for studying biological rhythms and biological
clocks. Her laboratory was the first to prove that the
central biological clock is influenced by the length of the
day, the so-called photoperiod, and that it hence func¬
tions not only as a daily schedule but also as an annual

calendar.
Helena
Illnerová
thus became the founder of
the Czech school of chronobiology, recognised also in
the world.
She is a founding member of the Learned Society of
the CR
(1994).
Auxins and Other Loves
Prof. RNDr. Eva
Zažímalová,
CSc.
(* 1955),
is an au¬
thor of many works on phytohormones which push the
boundaries of current knowledge on the plant hor¬
mone/plant-growth regulator auxin, its metabolism,
transport and signal pathways (auxin is one of the main
regulators of plant development). She was the director
of the Institute of Experimental Botany of the AS CR;
it is thanks to her that the whole, originally quite 'scat¬
tered', institute is concentrated in the complex of the
Academy of Sciences in Prague-Lysolaje now. She is
currently the head of the Laboratory of Hormonal
Regulations in Plants of the Institute of Experimental
Botany of the AS CR, and a member of the Academic
Council of the AS CR. She lectures as a professor at the
Faculty of Science of Charles University in Prague.
I'm Burning Hot

I Wish I Were Already
There
Having been influenced by both parents, Prof. PhDr.
Eva
Semotanová, DrSc.
(* 1952),
played with the
thought of pursuing a career in astronomy and visual
arts when she was a child; at secondary school, however,
she became fascinated by history. She graduated from
the fields of archival science and history at the Faculty
of Arts of Charles University in Prague, after which she
joined the Institute of History of the AS CR, whose

she has been since
2012.
She has devoted her
professional career to historical cartography, the history
of cartography and historical geography. She has written
numerous books and textbooks. She is a member of the
editorial board of The Historical Town Atlas of the
Czech Republic; in
2005-2010,
she worked on the
conception of the scientific Academic Atlas of Czech
History, and her name is connected also with such titles
as
Česko:

A Czech Scientist in the Land
of the Unexpected
The tropical biologist Prof. RNDr.
Vojtěch Novotný,
CSc.
(* 1964),
has devoted his entire life to studying
mainly insect—plant relations in tropical forests. Over
the last seventeen years, he has spent six months every
year in a prefabricated block of flats in a housing estate
in
České Budějovice
and another six months in Papua-
-New Guinea. In
České Budějovice,
he is the head of the
Department of Ecology and Conservation Biology of
the Institute of Entomology of the Biology Centre of the
Academy of Sciences of the CR, he gives lectures on
tropical ecology at Czech universities; in Papua-New
Guinea, he manages a separate Czech research centre.
Within seven years, the Czech team has been able to
map the composition of herbivorous insects on enough
tropical trees to revise the estimate of the total number
of insects in the world tropics and thus on the entire
planet, because the vast majority of insects live pre¬
cisely in tropical forests.

Astronomers in South America
Prof. RNDr.
Jan Palouš,
DrSc.
(* 1949),
and RNDr.
Jiří
Grygar, CSc.
(* 1936),
talk about the activities of Czech
astronomers in the countries of South America. They are
both members of the Learned Society; Grygar is one of
its founders.
The Czech Republic joined the European Southern
Observatory
(ESO
-European Organisation for Astro¬
nomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere), which
has three observing sites in Chile, because its astron¬
omers consider it to be important to observe the south¬
ern hemisphere. They utilise the local radio telescopes
as well as large optical telescopes, which are usually
combined to provide greater performance. They com¬
pete for the inclusion of their assignments in the pro¬
gramme with other colleagues; they can always use the
Danish telescope, which they have improved, for six
months.
The Pierra Augera Observatory in Argentina, focus¬
ing on the analysis of cosmic rays with the highest ener¬
gies, is another unique astronomical workplace. Czech
experts had a large share in its construction, supplying
most of the specially manufactured mirrors.
The Impact of Air Pollution on Human Health
MUDr.
Radim Šrám, DrSc.
(* 1939),
from the Institute
of Experimental Medicine of the AS CR, studies the im¬
pact of the polluted environment on people. Under the
communist regime, he had to keep secret the results of
his research, which were mostly negative. Fortunately,
his conclusions drew the attention of public health of¬
ficers and directors of some plants, so that it was pos¬
sible to take some precautions. His studies did not re¬
ceive full support until in the
1990s;
they led to a series
326
HVĚZDY VĚDECKÉHO NEBE
of practical
measures in factories and power plants, gra¬
dually improving the air quality in the republic. Never¬
theless, the situation is not completely good yet.
It Is Like a Sea Adventure to Lock Oneself
in a Laboratory
Prof. RNDr.
Jan Svoboda,
DrSc.
(* 1934),
is a geneticist
of international renown whose results have been largely
used in medicine. At the Institute of Molecular Genetics
of the AS CR, v.v.i., he has dealt with cellular and viral
genetics and tumour viruses. He discovered virogenes
related to retroviruses and explained their origin
through their integration into a cellular genome. He
proposed and proved that a certain virus alone causes
the formation of a malignant tumour. He introduced
cellular genetic methods and later also methods of mo¬
lecular biology including the cloning of the first unique
gene in Czechoslovakia.
In
1975»
the Nobel Prize was awarded for the discov¬
eries in which
Jan Svoboda
had participated. Its lau¬
reates then claimed that
Svoboda
should have received
the prize along with them. The situation in the former
communist Czechoslovakia, however, does not seem to
have allowed that.
He is one of the founders of the Learned Society
(1994).
He is a laureate of the prestigious Czech Head
award for scientists
(2010).

Oral History Brings Open-End Stories
Prof. PaedDr. Miroslav
Vaněk,
Ph.D.
(* 1961),
has
founded the Oral History Centre at the Institute of Con¬
temporary History of the AS CR. He and his colleagues
have managed to obtain a series of accounts on the Vel¬
vet Revolution in November
1989 -
from students, who
played an important role, and later also from the former
communist functionaries and dissidents. Their accounts
of the events showed that the thinking of these protagon¬
ists was not uniform: not all communist functionaries
in the
1980s
wanted to fulfil orders from Moscow, be¬
cause it would have undermined their power, whereas
the dissidents felt that they had little influence on the
Czech public but great importance for abroad. When the
opposition assumed power in Czechoslovakia at the end
of
1989,
it was difficult for it to develop a programme
for the restoration of a democratic system, because it
consisted of many streams, until then unified in their
resistance against communism, nothing else. The Oral
History Centre is currently collecting the accounts of
company managers before the Revolution while map¬
ping the lives of ordinary people.

Prof. RNDr.
Petr Pyšek, CSc.
(* 1958),
works at the In¬
stitute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences. In
1991,
he wrote his first article on invasions; he was the first
expert in the Czech Republic to map the occurrence of
hogweed (Heracleum) in

the most cited scientists of the world in his field. He
says about the situation in invasions: 'The state of the
landscape is crucial for them. As long as we care only
about how to exploit it and profit from it, we will have
problems.'
The Queen and the Maid at the Same Time
Prof. RNDr.
Jaroslav
Kurzweil,
DrSc.

is
a world-famous mathematician after whom the Henstock-
-Kurzweil integral has been named. During the more
than sixty years of his professional career, he has dealt
with the resolution of numerous complex mathematical

based in the northwest suburbs of Geneva, cooperates
also with the Czech Republic. This makes it possible for
Czech physicists and technicians to participate in the
operation of the world's largest particle accelerator

Large Hadron Collider. With some exaggeration, one
could say that it is a gigantic microscope that inspects
the depths of matter by means of experiments during
which small particles of matter are smashed together in
collisions at speeds close to the speed of light, thus si¬
mulating the conditions immediately after the creation
of the Universe
-
Big Bang. Czech scientists thus help
to clarify the physical nature of our world.

(2005-2009).
Although the quality of work at the institutes of the
Academy has improved, he considers it to be neces¬
sary, because of broad international cooperation, to
continue to increase its quality. This may be achieved
among others through the Biotechnology and
Biomed¬
icine
Centre of the AS CR and Charles University in
Veštec (BIOCEV),
focusing on research in biotechnolo¬
gies and
biomedicine,
whose construction he coordi¬
nated, as well as other centres of excellence planned.
At the request of the Prime Minister, he led the gov¬
ernmental committee that was to assess the prospects
of the Czech energy industry. He is one of the founding
members of the Learned Society.
