small farmer family which soon lost its breadwinner

He was able to attend a secondary school in
Kroměříž
and a Theological Faculty in
Olomouc
only owing to the help provided by other priests. He was ordained in
1892
by the bishop of Brno F. S. Bauer and worked as a chaplain from
1893
to
1899
in
Nový Jičín, Životice
(County
Opava)
and
Všechovice
(County
Kroměříž).
He left
the pastoral care in
1902
and went to Brno and fully devoted himself to organiza¬
tional work to build a modern Christian social movement. In addition, since
1905
he taught at the local bishop priestly school, first as an associate professor and sin¬
ce
1911
as a professor of Practical Christian Sociology. When Czechoslovakia was
founded he was elected in
1919
the chairman of the Czechoslovak People s Party,
a member of the National Assembly and a minister of the coalition governments of
the first republic. He received the title of

in
1902
and an honorary degree

In
1939
he fled with his colleague F.
Hála
to Poland, then to France and after its defeat
to England He was the prime minister of both provisional governments of Czecho¬
slovakia in London. In the years
1945-1948
he became involved in politics as the
chairman of the Czechoslovak People s Party and an undersecretary to the prime
minister. During the government crisis in February
1948
he joined after somehesita-
tion, the other democratic ministers and resigned. In March
1948
he tried to flee the
country together with F.
Hála
but was arrested and after that spent Merest of his life
in prison (e. g- in
Valdice).
While interned at
Roželov

seriously ill and was hospitalized under an assumed name

Nový Jičín,
where he also took^part in ±e

vities of the Czech Catholic Modernism. He

onal Catholic Party in Moravia since
1896
and in
1899

Christian Social Party in Moravia and Silesia. At the first party congress in

he formulated the Christian people s work programme based on solidarity and deve¬
lopment of self-help and co-operative movement. He was building the party on the
principles of modern political partisanship as a mass organization with the existen¬
ce of a number of satellite organizations. In the years
1906—1918
he was a deputy
of The Moravian Provincial Assembly and between
1907—1911
he was a deputy of
The Imperial Council in Vienna.
During the First World War he was one of the pro-Austrian political activists,
but he parted his ways with them towards the end of the war and became one of the
first Catholic politicians who spoke out in favour of an independent Czechoslovak
state. He was a member of the National Committee in Prague and Brno and partici¬
pated in the coup. These activities brought him to the forefront of the Czech political
Catholicism which he led until
1948.
His tactical politics contributed significantly to
averting attacks against Catholicism after

October
1918.
It was mainly his contri¬
bution that helped shape the relationships between the new state, the Roman Catholic
Church and the Vatican. Since
1920
he was a member of a so-called Committee
of Five and during
Švehla s
illness in
1928—1929
he led the Czechoslovak govern¬
ment as a under-secretary. He was an excellent tactician and a master of backroom
negotiations who excelled at reaching a compromise. His well- known motto is: We
agreed to agree . In the
1930s
he accentuated the democratic line of politics in the
Czechoslovak People s Party and contributed to the election of the president
Edvard
Beneš
in
1935.
The Czechoslovak People s Party under his leadership stood by the
republic and supported the defense against Nazism and fascism and its ministers
in
Hodža s
government in September
1938
refused to accept the surrender. As the
prime minister in the provisional government of Czechoslovakia in London he sup¬
ported the activities of president
Beneš
and sought to unite the various opinions of
the Czechoslovak exile. He remained in this crucial role also in the post-war gover¬
nments after returning to the liberated Czechoslovakia. He opposed the communist
totalitarian practices, but just like during the first Czechoslovak Republic he refused
aggressive politics and promoted moderate tactical approach in the party.
The monograph is based on a wide use of resources and literature and seeks to
create a balanced picture of
Šrámek
as a party politician and statesman who greatly
influenced the Czech political Catholicism and its policies in the spirit of social ori¬
entation and re-Christianization efforts at the end of the 19th century and the first
half of the 20th century. At the same time he went down in modern national history
as a supporter of democracy and the Czechoslovak Republic.
