DOROTHY WORDSWORTH
Wonders of the Everyday
This book is about Dorothy Wordsworth;
about her, girl and woman, who loved and
wept, rejoiced and worked, sat in stillness
to look, walked in all weathers, talked and
listened. She wrote about it all, wrote about
living, even in age and ulness.
She put into words moons and clouds
and poor people on the roads, plants of
fellside and garden, birds and the voices of
waterfalls- Indoors was in words too, bread
and pies, pike and pork, and the silences of
an evening by the fire, the gold watch tick¬
ing, poetry read, and those she loved sharing
the comfort.
She simply knew what home was. She
had lost hers when she was six; found a
kindness in Halifax and was torn from that
at fifteen. But
-
she re-met her brothers;
the most directionless and homeless was
William. Ultimately in Grasmere the two
made a home at Dove Cottage and the
home grew, on Wordsworth s marriage, into
a family home. Something of the lost child¬
hood home was restored.
Dorothy wrote. Hundreds of letters
throughout her life kept family and friends
close and in touch. She needed that. Her
brief Grasmere journal is often near to
the poetry that constantly hovered about
the house. Her brother was a poet, and
Dorothy, writing and talking with him, had
a creative, intellectual and loving life.
The world for the sister as -well as the
brother was indeed what could be seen and
touched; but there was a world also in the
words on paper, prose or poetry. Reading
her private journal we recognise the love
and fear and hope of a particular woman
at a particular time; but we also rejoice in
what is there in the Journal, a world familiar
that becomes new, a world we seem to have
known forever, and that can still surprise us.
This book is about Dorothy Wordsworth
the woman and the writer, a woman who
saw wonder in the everyday.
