ALBANIAN APOSTLE
Albania National Movement during the period of Albanian Na¬
tional renaissance, had created in time its strategic program of action,
based on the demands set by the historical moment. The basic
demand being the creation of a national conscience, the struggle
against religious divisions
-
with the motto "the belief of an Albanian
is Albania" respectively the liberation and the unity of the country. As
a precondition to this was education in Albanian, which included
publication of books and journals. The appliance of Albanian in
church service, instead of the foreign Greek and Slavic languages was
also one of the key tasks.
To achieve the program they had to face various obstacles. The
absolute and corrupted ottoman regime, allowed to all minorities on
the Albanian Vilayets the right to have schools and churches in their
mother tongue, but this right was denied to the Albanian majority,
because they mistook them for Turks or Christians
-
identifying them
with their religion.
Purged and persecuted at home, the Movement was forced to act
abroad, within the Albanian communities, and this was one of the
specificity's of the Movement.
Among the communities abroad the one from Bucharest was more
prepared in compare to the others. The Movement formed various
associations and one of them was called "Drita", with its leader being
Nikolla
Naço
-
Korça
(1843-1913).
Naço's
appearance on the political
scene is considered as a revolutionary turn in the Albanian National
Movement. Nikolla
Naço,
the chairman of "Drita" was the most
prominent Albanian personality in Bucharest.
Still as a young boy he felt all the pressure from the so-called
reforms of Tanzimat, and their destructive effect on Albanians and
Albania. As he saw no way out in his homeland he was forced to leave.
In
1861,
as a boy of eighteen he went to Egypt with many other
Albanian migrants from various provinces of the country. As a cotton
dealer there, he became very rich and established many important

contracts, and made the acquaintance of different notable personali¬
ties.
When in
1875
was formed the association called
"Vëllazëria
e Pare"
in Egypt, Nikolla
Naço
became one of the most prominent of its
members. In
1877,
with a group of his Albanian friends he held the
first church service in Albanian, in the church of Zagazik near Cairo.
He was considered as an open rebellion by the Greek church.
When a branch of
"Shoqëria e
Stambołlit
per
vivia shqipe"
was
newly formed in Egypt, Nikolla
Naço
gave his highest
financial
support
to it. This enraged the Greek consul in Egypt, accusing the Albanians
with Greek passports to be acting against Greek interests. The dispute
lead to the assassination of Greek consul by Nikola
Naço's
nephew,
Vangjeli, only fourteen. And naturally
Naço
was to face accusations
for this. So by October
1884
he is to
e
found in Rumania, among his
Korcars.
The Statutes of "Drita" were mainly concerned with the publica¬
tion and distribution of books and journals in Albanian. The other
crucial concern was the implementation of Albanian instead of the
foreign Greek an Slavic languages in the Orthodox Church of Albania.
In
1885,
under the name of Joanidis, he met the Patriarch of
Istanbul, an he submitted to him, in the name of Albanians, the
demand for the use of Albanian language in Orthodox Churches. Such
a plea was submitted both in Albanian and Greek.
During his absence from Bucharest, confusion was created among
Albanians, some members of "Drita" became very passive. This was
due to Russian propaganda. Nikolla
Naço
asked for an annual meeting
of the Association, and in May
1886
an accident happened during the
meeting which lead to the abrogation of the Association.
In January
1887, N.
Naço
and his supporters reestablished "Drita"
and elected a new committee. A new Statute was approved, and new
branches were formed among Albanians of Rumania.
Despite of attacks and criticism the Association went on with its
activity. The same year when the first school in Albanian was opened,
the first ABC in Albanian was published and distributed free of charge
among Albanians. In
1888
the first journal in Albanian, named
"S(h)qipëtari",
was founded, with a Latin alphabet and only a few
Rumanian letters. The first copies of the journal were sent to Albania
by Gjerasim Qiriazi at the same time a Prayer Book according to
Matheus
was translated into Albanian, financially helped by
Naço
and
by the English Biblical Society.

From this period date
Naço's
contacts with various dignitaries
among whom the Albanologist Benlow, Jan Urban Jarnik, K.
Kristo

To improve his finances

undertook a variety of municipal
works within Bucharest and its vicinity. In
1890
with the permission
of the city authorities he organized a lottery, and
1893
a concert and
a dancing, which brought the Association some improvements.
In May
1892
in the name of "Drita" he opened the first Albanian
Training School, which was to prepare teachers "regardless of their
religion". Lectures in his school were held by university professors of
Bucharest. Many of the students from this school rose to fame later
as writers, patriots, and revolutionaries.
Speaking about Nikolla
Naço
and his merits, L.
Poradeci
justly
concluded that Nikolla
Naço
is the initiator for all actions and activi¬
ties in the highest circles of European diplomacy, he initiated the
Albanian question in all the important Offices.
Within the program of "Drita" a notable place took the Albanization
of the Orthodox Church. This was present in all this activities since
the times of Egypt and Istanbul. In
1890
in the name of "Drita" he
pleaded with the authorities of the city of Bucharest for a location in
which would be built a church and a mosque.
According to his testimonies, an obstacle to this was the associa¬
tion of Macedonian Vllachs "Societea
de cultura Macedo-Romana"
of
Bucharest, which had set itself the task of assimilating Albanians.
Their hypocrisy was clearly indicated in
Naço's
motto "Dixiet
salvavi
animam meam".
Naco's voice was raised also against Rumanian
pseudo
scientists
and forgers who wrote about the Vllachs of Albania increasing their
number manifolds.
After the foundation of the Committee for the Liberation of Albania
in
1905,
a need for the unification of all Albanian associations in
Rumania in one organization was strongly felt. So far they were
dispersed into "Drita", "Shpresea", "Diturija" etc.
Naço
was ready to
withdraw as chairman of "Drita" should the newly funded organization
be called "Drita", the symbol of Albanian national awakening. When
these associations united without his presence he was desperate and
insulted.
Members of "Drita" who opposed this atmosphere, in January
1907
reelected a new committee of "Drita". The crucial matters though
united the two. One of these was the foundation of an Albanian church
in Bucharest. And in December
1909
was elected the first Albanian

Albanese).
The once millionaire Nikolla
Naço,
now an old man, was living in
poverty, his wealth being spent for the Albanian cause. He was
accused by some circles as a Turkish spy with no proof at all. He was
also denigrated as an agent of the Macedonian Vllachs, but he could
easily reject all those false accusations coming from various bandits
who wrote pamphlets and lies against the Albanian people. He was
also accused as a depositor to various banks when he did not a have
a dime in his pocket. In spite of this his name was spoken with respect
by people everywhere. Invited by
Karol
I King of Rumania to a
ceremony he had to rent a suit for the occasion.
Nikolla
Naço
appeared for the last time at a meeting called by
Ismail Qemali and Luigj Gurakuqi in the Hotel "Continental" of
Bucharest.
At the beginning of
1913
he was accepted as a hospital of
Bucharest for poor people, and died there in February
1913,
his last
words being "Long live Albania".
He was buried in April
1913,
in his old overcoat and cardboard
shoes. His funeral was attended by Fan Noli who had come all the
way from USA for the occasion.
