| adam_text | The Letters of Ernest Hemingway, Volume
3: / 926—/ 929 follows the trajectory of
Hemingway’s reputation as a rising star on
the literary Left Bank as he moved into the
American mainstream. Maxwell Perkins,
legendary editor at Scribner’s, recognized
and nurtured Hemingway’s talent,
accepting his satirical novel The Torrents
of Spring ( I 926) in order to publish what
would become one of the signature works
of the twentieth century: The Sun Also
Rises ( I 926). The story collection Alen
Without Women ( I 927) followed, and by
early I 929 Hemingway had completed
A Farewell to Arms.
Returning from Europe in the spring
of I 928 to spend a year in the United
States, he took up residence in Key West
and developed a passion for big game
fishing. We see the progression of his
relationships with such figures as Ezra
Pound, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Archibald
MacLeish, Sylvia Beach, John Dos Passos,
Owen Wister, James Joyce, and T. S. Eliot.
Hemingway’s letters of this period also
reflect the landmark events in his personal
life: the dissolution of his first marriage
to Hadley, his affair with, and subsequent
marriage to, their friend Pauline Pfeiffer,
the birth of his second son (Patrick), and
the suicide of his father. As the volume
ends in April 1929, Hemingway is setting
off on the return to Paris and standing on
the cusp of celebrity as one of the major
writers of his time.
