how the courts interpret contracts is therefore a key part of the job. There has been
an·explosion in the number of cases on the topic recently, accompanied by an
increase in its academic discussion.,
In this concise and timely new book, Richard Calnan explains and re-evaluates
the law

conceptual level by setting out the principles which guide the courts in
interpreting contracts. Each principle is discussed and illustrated by examples, and
its practical implications are analysed. He also examines how the principles should
affect how contracts are drafted.
As well as covering the interpretation of contracts, the book also discusses the
implication of terms, rectification, and estoppel by convention, making it a valuable
guide to understanding all of the issues which are involved in reading and
