Summary
The stylistic changes
of
Lusîtian
culture pottery in Great Poland
This postdoctoral thesis presents the most numerous
category of archaeological artefacts of the
Lusatian
culture
-
the pottery
-
for the whole of the existence of
these communities in Great Poland (Poland), in other
words between phase III of the Bronze Age and later
pre-Roman period. In this investigation nearly
11,000
well-preserved or well reconstructed hand-made vessels
were used. The assumption was made that only com¬
pletely preserved vessels with all indicators might be
used to create a trustworthy basis for studies of stylistic
changes, which were the starting points for further con¬
siderations and conclusions.
The first step in the above mentioned research was
creating a classification of the collection of vessels
-
for
this reason the first chapter was devoted to morphologi¬
cal classification of vessels and the second to their orna¬
mentation. The common bases for the classification of
vessels were metric data and geometry (Fig.
1).
Based
on these indicators the groups of vessels were estab¬
lished and the first letter of their name (in Polish) was
the name of the group: W-vases, A-amphorae, M-bowls
etc. Further micro-morphological differentiation (inter
alia the shape of the neck of vessel and the ratio of height
of vessel to its height of bend) was the basis for distin¬
guishing of types (e.g. Wl), subtypes (e.g. W1A), varie¬
ties (e.g. W1A1) and subvarieties (e.g. WlAla). Each of
the proposed classification

was closely defined and
presented at figures from

14.
The classification of the ornamentation of the col¬
lected vessels was conducted at multiple levels. In the
first step, it the basic theme was taken into account, then
its development (opus), as a result of inclusion of ad¬
ditional elements. The basic condition was consistent
performance of the sequence
-
always starting from the
basic theme, through the inclusion of additional ele¬
ments
-
e.g. started from little punctures, through en¬
graved lines, finishing with relief elements. The figures
from

main types of ornamentation.
The investigation of stylistic changes of pottery pro¬
duction was possible only in well-dated collections.
One of the best indicators of chronological position
(apart from absolute dating) was metal artefacts. In this
area some technical and technological features such as
painting, blacking or incrustation were very helpful.
Based on this data it was possible to determine some
main stages of development. Each of the five develop¬
ing phases distinguished here exhibited specific forms
of morphology and ornamentation. Detailed compari¬
son between morphology and ornamentation of vessels
and their chronology made it possible to distinguish
two transitional phases situated between main phases
Ha (phase IV and V of the Bronze Age) and Ilia (phase
V of Bronze Age and
Hallstatt C)
and phase
Va
which
reflected the fading of tradition concerning the transi¬
tion into the later pre-Roman period. The figures from

present stages distinguished in above described
production of pottery.
The collection of vessel forms and ornamentation
presented in first chapter was very numerous and vari¬
ous. For the purpose of carrying out the examination of
dynamics of the development of pottery manufacturing
it was necessary to determine chronological indicators
of each stage of development of pottery production in
Great Poland. Integrated information obtained from the
analysis of these data made it possible to track the dy¬
namics of the development of this field of production,

showing the diversity of it, both in terms of assortment,
as well as style.
The hypothesis was accepted which claimed that the
high variety of ornamentation observed in collections
of pottery recovered from different microregions of
Great Poland might determine the sense of self-identity
of communities and the desire to separate themselves
from other social groups at
microregional
scale. In this
context the ornamentation codes and metric systems of
vessels were treated as potential identifiers of ancient
communication communities, which allowed them to
define their role and importance in the functioning of
the larger
socio-cultural
organism.
The second research question considered whether
pottery production was serial and repeatable in the
frameworks of individual workshops and could be iden¬
tified as a definition of territorial range.
The analysis of pottery manufacturing development
in I phase was contested by uneven distribution of the
Lusatian
culture settlements in this time in Great Poland
(map
1).
The few sites of the
Lusatian
culture, mainly
with sepulchral character, were concentrated in middle
and lower basin of
Obra
river. The collection of artefacts
was small and poorly differentiated and contained only

vessels. However, even at this initial stage the crea¬
tivity of communities in design and ornamentation was
well visible.
In the beginning of phase IV of the Bronze Age the
small
reallocations
of groups of the
Lusatian
culture into
the centre of Great Poland were observable. It was a time
of settlement stabilization and emergence of some new
settlement concentrations. The increase of artefacts in
the database was, unfortunately, only apparent com¬
pared to the former phase (phase I). These were mainly
funeral sites with slightly more than
100
graves inter alia
furnished with vessels. Their comparison was very dif¬
ficult because of incompleteness and disparities in the
number of vessels recovered in graves (phase II of pot¬
tery manufacturing). The examination of these vessels
showed stability of basic indicators in both the mor¬
phology and decoration as well. Apart from few micro-
regional differences noticed mainly at the vessels which
were no phase determinants, this stage was character¬
ised by high level of stasis.
The next stage (phase III) of pottery manufacturing
of the
Lusatian
culture communities in Great Poland re¬
flected the condition of their economy, that was clearly
visible in a significant intensification of settlement pro¬
cesses (map
3).
It was a time of the introduction of many
changes in pottery production, which were well observ¬
able in different morphology and ornamentation. It was
also noted the use of older forms, which were modified
in many manners. These modified forms much often
than new vessels were decorated according to phase V of
the Bronze Age fashion. Considerable creativity was ob¬
served in the shaping of vessels at micromorphological
level, which was reflected in the numerous differences
in forming of edges and bases or in location of handles.
The early Iron Age (HaC) it was time of considerable
thinning of settlement structure of the
Lusatian
culture
in Great Poland for in this time forming strongholds
(map
4).
The pottery manufacturing was dominated
by south European achievements in this field, such as
painting and blacking of pottery. However, the local
manufacturers invention was not abandoned. Other¬
wise, in this phase (phase IV of pottery manufacturing)
the explosion in introducing of new forms of vessels and
modification of old ones was noticed. In particular, this
flourishing was observed in using new and unique dec¬
orations which were frequently designed for individual
vessels. Undoubtedly it was an expression of enormous
development and intellectual potential of many social
groups of the
Lusatian
culture in Great Poland.
Visible in the settlement structure of
Hallstatt D
(phase V of pottery manufacturing) in the region stud¬
ied, was the next stage of abandoning of some oecumena
that was connected with the increasing role of strong¬
holds, which concentrated around them numerous open
settlements (map
5).
At the end of this period further
changes concerning the total collapse of settlement sys¬
tem took place. In the area of vessel manufacturing the
huge declines, both in quantity as well in quality was
noted. It should be emphasised that new patterns of
decorations appear very scarce and in most cases motifs
which came from a previous phase were used.
With the purpose of proving the hypothesis that it
is possible to read the regional identity of communities
based on pottery, the few very characteristic decoration
themes from phase V of the Bronze Age and the
Hallstatt

were chosen. It was considered that only these peri¬
ods resources
ofinformation
-
the number of well-dated
graves and multithreading of motifs
-
were sufficient
for conducting the above mentioned investigations (the
obtained results were shown in annex nr
1).
Illustrated
examples proved the existence in this period of the lo¬
cal exchange between representatives of different social
groups of
Lusatian
culture, presumably mostly women.
However, there was no opportunity to determine an in¬
dividual person or workshop, which had specific combi¬
nation of features or one serial feature.

The clear difference in morphology and ornamenta¬
tion between pottery recovered from settlements and
pottery taken from necropolises with their repeatability
could provide the existence of specialized potter-woman
or potter-women in single settlement concentrations
who manufactured the pottery for local recipients. The
above mentioned statement answered the question con¬
cerning the seriality of clay vessels production. There
was no reason to assume the exchange of the
Lusatian
culture pottery.
The research conducted on the manufacture of Lusa-
tian culture pottery, its differentiation on the one hand
and traditionalism on the other hand, revealed and con¬
firmed unusual dynamics of some settlement centres.
Combining the result of this study with information of
the condition of prehistoric population, the analysis of
settlement structure (including the very important
mi¬
croregional
studies), as well as data on bronze items de¬
posited (which were indicators of economic reservoir
of the examined communities), will make an important
contribution to the study of resilience and the pace of
development of the various microregions and will be the
manifestation of the dynamics of economic development
across Great Poland in the times of
Lusatian
culture.
