CONCLUSIONS
Serbian authorities, installed during the twentieth century in Kosovo,
used discriminatory methods against the process of academic and cultural
development of the Albanians in Kosovo. Kosovo had a very narrow net of
cultural and educational development in the Albanian language. For 23 years
rule of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes, a small number of
Albanians graduated from Yugoslavian universities. Even after World War II,
national discrimination by Serbian authorities against ethnic Albanians in
Kosovo continued to be extended to the educational and cultural area. Despite
some achievements in the seventies, most of those newly opened schools were
named after Slavic personalities, which were not in accord with the Albanian
language, history and culture. In addition, textbooks were filled with ideologies,
etc. In the early nineties of the twentieth century, outrageous violence from the
Serbian occupiers against the Albanian school was occurring as throughout
Kosovo also in the municipality of Mitrovica, the consequences of which are
still felt today. Serbian authorities, through the police mechanism, tried by all
means to impose Serbia s legal provisions, programs, and Serbian pedagogical
thinking to the Albanian students and teachers-which were one of the main anti-
Albanian policies. On the other hand, through apartheid and ethnocide, Serbian
authorities caused segregation and closed Albanian schools by forcibly
removing the teachers and students from their school facilities, and even
arrested, beat, imprisoned, poisoned and killed the Albanian students and
teachers. In addition, the installed Serbian cut the financial income to education
workers in order to prevent the existence of educational development. In this
overall framework, the Serbian authorities did not allow teaching of Albanian
students in 5 schools-in which violent measures were put; the Faculty of
Mining-Metallurgy and in the Technical High School. The violent measures
were put in some primary schools, too.

In response to that political situation and to other measures undertaken
then, during 1989-1991, dissatisfaction continued in Mitrovica. Mitrovica had
become the center of ferment, revolt, opposition, but also one of the largest
ranges of violence and state terror. Despite this, teachers, students and parents
organized to hold classes in their school facilities, by manifesting their
dissatisfaction in a civilized manner by organizing a series of protests at their
school facilities.
Development of the Serbian curriculum and the decision for their
introduction in Kosovo s schools, teaching staff and students in Mitrovica
would be unacceptable, since they were highly discriminatory for students,
teachers generally Albanians being denied from their culture and national
history. Therefore, they did not accept the content of the programs and such
texts, being principled and consistent to work only with the curriculum plan
developed by the adequate Albanian personnel, thus refusing the Serbian
policies towards the free process of development and educational and cultural
thought. Furthermore, teachers helped with their work in the creation of
different political authorities of the time.
After the application of violent measures, teachers and students started
to attend classes in the home-schools and in the primary school premises
despite police and Serbian inspector warnings and threats. This way it was
alternated, with home - schools and primary schools, with the determined
educational staff that wanted a separated education system from the Serbian
education system. Based on the number of students, home-schools were
provided, by opening “educational checkpoints” in some city neighborhoods
and villages: Ilirida, Blood Bridge, Bajr, Shipol, Bajgora, Kçiq, etc. In
“Educational checkpoints” the educational personnel formed parent councils,
compiled teaching schedules, formed classes, represented general subjects,
professional subjects, spare frame, made the reduction of curriculum planning,
supervision and pedagogical assistance etc. In “Checkpoints”, Albanian
teachers continued teaching middle school students, in more severe conditions,
without the most basic things, without salary and always under the target of
Serbian police. Thus, in absence of schools premises, education in Mitrovica in
the process of its development, was not only portrayed in its content, but also in
the ways and means that were used for the necessity and the need to find
buildings, furniture, teaching tools, and adequate educational framework, as far
as circumstances and conditions of that time would permit. On the other hand,

schools were named after prominent Albanian personalities in the history of
science education and culture.
Albanian education crisis worsened day by day because of the Serbian
state repression. A number of teachers in order to escape from Serbian violence
but also for economic reasons had left the country to migrate to different
countries in Europe and beyond. Lack of teaching was visible everywhere.
Despite of the situation created, the educational staff in Mitrovica tuck work in
organizing and finding the best alternatives to keep teaching at all levels of
education, from primary to university. It was a generous commitment of all
appropriate educational entities and other organizational segments of students,
in order for teaching in Mitrovica and its surroundings, even though in difficult
conditions, not to stop working. In this regard, great support was given from
some people who turned their homes into schools, despite the risks that will be
coming from the Serbian authorities. But a special contribution to the
development of education in Mitrovica and Kosovo, without a doubt was given
from compatriots who migrated to various European countries and from various
local donors.
In “Educational checkpoints” it had become a common occurrence that
the Serbian police would interrupt the learning process by bullying students and
mistreating and arresting teachers and directors. In “checkpoints” or home -
schools, Serbian police interrupted the classes by beating and arresting, but
teachers and students still returned to their improvised desks after the police
left. Thus, despite the difficulties and obstacles, the teaching in Albanian in
Mitrovica will not stop its efforts for development and consolidation.
In Mitrovica, as elsewhere in Kosovo, cultural activities did not stop,
despite the Serbian police s brutal interventions. Elementary and secondary
schools of the city did not stop such activities, dedicated to various historical
events and personalities. Cultural events were held among all elementary and
secondary schools of the city. Thus, despite the measures taken by the Serbian
authorities in power to prevent the development of education and culture, the
Albanian educational cadres did not stop their activities, in the organization of
various national events, such as the celebration of Flag Day-November 28th, or
celebrations of various meetings, strengthening students spiritual moral and
social life in general. Teachers equipped with their professional, human and
national -cultural skillse, constantly cared for equipping the schools with
national portraits, such as Skanderbeg, and of Renaissance figures or later

historical personalities. Thus, those with methodological and pedagogical
knowledge prepared students and the public opinion for the difficult path to
national liberation..
In Mitrovica, as in Kosovo, in 1998, the liberation war day by day
extended. Teaching in the school year 1998/99 was developed little by little.
The learning process completely stopped on March 23, 1999, after NATO
(North Atlantic Treaty Organization) bombings began. With the escalation of
the war and the Serbian terror exercised in addition to other damages, many
Albanian schools were burned and destroyed.
During the liberation war, a large part of the teaching staff and students
joined in solidarity with the liberation struggle. Convinced that “freedom is
obtained with blood”, many teaches answered the alert for homeland freedom
on the front lines of the liberation war. Furthermore, some teachers were also in
time in the first organizing cells of the liberation war in the operative zone of
Shala e Bajgores and beyond. Teachers refused submission or collaboration
with the invader, but clasped their guns and went to fight for the liberation of
their country. Aware of the duties of the country, they expressed their
willingness to serve voluntarily as freedom fighters in squads, platoons,
companies, battalions and brigades of the liberation war. Teachers, students,
soldiers and officers of the KLA (Kosovo Liberation Army), of the operational
area of Shala e Bajgores, who fell in battle against the enemy had one thing in
common: the dream of liberation and national unification. They fell in defense
of honor, identity and national pride.
Many students, teachers, principals of elementary and secondary schools
were imprisoned and killed by the army and state police forces. These martyrs
of the nation, did not turn their back on Kosovo to join the biblical exodus, but
they, empty handed, stopped in front of school’s door by stoically standing in
front of Serbian invader’s bullets.
After the war (1999), Albanian students and teachers, who were forcibly
displaced, immediately returned to Kosovo. Many school buildings that were
burned during the war, were rebuilt and upgraded. But the difficulties of the
learning process continued for some time. After the war, the school started
almost from scratch. Thanks to international donor organizations, some schools
were built and conditions to continue teaching students in school facilities were
created. Although in extremely difficult conditions, students and teachers now
have their freedom martyrs, whose names will be engraved in the homeland

Obelisk because they gave the most precious-their life. Many schools, streets
and squares will proudly bear the names of our teachers, now martyrs of the
nation.
In the overall cadre, during the nineties, not without difficulties and
obstacles, many contacts in the quantitative and qualitative growth were
created, especially to educational and cultural institutions in Mitrovica. They
were especially an important condition and indispensable support for the
Albanian people in Kosovo, in its hard way of national affirmation in Serbian
occupation conditions. The effects of such a process reduced the consequences
of the previous division by strengthening fraternal ties, embodied with the
Albanian national awareness in Kosovo, such as the national movement in
which it turned into constantly, as a political educational, cultural and national
movement. Thus, the awareness of national unity, transcending all barriers of
political separation and divisive demagogy, which the Serbian regime
continuously advanced, strengthened as never before the aspiration of Albanian
people in Kosovo for national liberation. It is the merit of the pupils and their
parents on the progress of the educational process during 1990/99. Indeed, the
resistance and teachers’ attempt to keep alive the Albanian school was a
Prometheus-like resistance. Therefore, we should thank the teachers who
worked with dedication for the Albanian education in the liberation war.
