UHERSKÝ BROD

In
1683,
town scribe Martin Josef
Ležák
established the Book of
the Town of
Uherský Brod.
It contains records of current and
historical events in and around town, official documents about
property negotiations between the town hall and the local
gentry, and censuses of population and property. It extends into
the year
1709.
The manuscript is kept at the State District Archive
in
Uherské Hradiště.
Our publication presents an interpretation of
Ležák
s
Memorial
Book from the standpoint of history, literary science and
linguistics. It also features an authenticated transcript of the
manuscript, with the parts in Latin and German rendered also
in Czech translation.
Ležák s
Memorial Book and the Town History
This Book of the Town of
Uherský Brod,
established for sundry memories
as well as for trades or testaments after the fall of the rebels which
occurred on the 14th day of July dedicated to Saint
Bonaventura in
the
year
1683,
composed by the municipal syndic Martin Josef
Ležák,
is one of the key sources of history for
Uherský Brod.
Although
being published only now, it is not unknown to historians and the
general public. The entire section from the
Ležák s
manuscript
were excerpted by his younger contemporary
Václav František
Letocha in his work Monuments of the Town of
Uherský Brod
in

1724.
And Letocha himself contributed some passages to
Ležák
s
book. The two chroniclers do not differ in their outlook on the
world, but the motivation is slightly different.
Ležák
is trying
to save the remnants of historical materials after a large portion
of the archive along with some possessions of the town and its
citizens had been lost in the tragic looting of
1683.
Consequently,
he pays much attention to the past in both historical and
legendary sense. He draws on a variety of sources, especially
his predecessor
Matyáš Haškonius,
who, in
1666,
wrote Short
Chronicle of
Uherský Brod
(pub.
2011).
This commemorative book
is partly historiografical and partly official. Even the inventory
of damage sustained in
1683
is a copy of an official document.
Another theme of a similar character in The Memorial Book are the
talks with the local aristocracy about forgiving debt, redressing
old wrongs, and restoring the former stature of free burghers.
This is recorded up to the so-called Municipal Transaction of
1686,
where
Ležák
recounts in detail the reasons why the town
approached its owner
Dominik Ondřej
of Kounice and, in
1680,
started to negotiate with him. In addition to correspondence and
legal opinions, the book cites the text of the transaction itself.
Other parts deal with legal matters of private and public nature.
The book ends with an extensive list of agricultural parcels
within the town s jurisdiction and their owners, from the period
of
1696-1699.
Finally, there are fragments of documents, such as
partially preserved notes on the town history from a church tower
.

as Literature
While
Ležák s
Memorial Book is primarily a historiografical
record, the lapse of time permits to view it as a literary text. It is
mentioned in the compendia of literary history and in the works
of historians. It contains the records of historically documented
events, but also passages whose form is close to the art of legends

and story telling. It even contains a poem in Latin (penned in
verse by
Ležák
himself, lamenting the sack of town). This chapter
discusses the literary milieu in which the book came into being,
its genre classification and artistic style associations.
The historical passages from
Ležák
s
Memorial Book most
closely resemble an authorial chronicle-based narration of an
analistic type. The literary tendency is unintentional, record
takes precedence over depiction. Conversely, the stories, the
legends, the already mentioned poem, and even some chronicle
entries (for example about a bell casting fiasco) testify to
Ležák s
artistic personality and his literary savvy. The Memorial Book
reproduces fairly long passages from some older sources, mostly
from a local chronicle of
Matyáš Haškonius
(1666),
and from
Historical Calendar by Daniel Adam of
Veleslavín
(1590),
in turn
becoming a source for a subsequent local chronicle Monuments of
Uherský Brod
by
Václav František Letocha
(1724).
Language and Graphics of the Czech Text in
Ležák s
Memorial
Book
The Book of the Town of
Uherský Brod,
dating back to
1683,
can serve
as a source of Baroque Czech, the study of which has progressed
well in the last decades. The book reflects many linguistic
idiosyncrasies of its time. In phonology, it is ej instead of
ý
(vejpis
instead of
výpis)
and
ý
instead of
é
(řečenýho
instead of
řečeného).
In
morphology, it is for example the
-í
ending in names that, in the
current Czech, end in -e or -ie
(Excelencí, profesí, rebeli
etc. instead
of
Excelence, rebelie, profese).
Conspicuous at the intersection of
syntax and morphology are incongruous participles
(dovedúce
se toho městský advokát),
and present periphrastic passives
expressing the past
{a tak tehdy
siata jest
=
byla sťata).
There are
also peculiarities in the word order, like placing the finite verbs
at the end of clauses in compound sentences.

The vocabulary of this chronicle includes surpringly many
German and Latin expressions. Some of the Germanisms
{grunty

základy,
]
edroval ~
podporoval, rathauz

radnice)
are still in
vague memory, others cannot be found even in the best Czech
dictionaries of the 20th century (durchcuky
—
army passage,
orkaf
=
material reserve, mncirovali
se

redeemed themselves).
Latin is represented by terms either morphologically adapted
(k ceremóniám),
or used in their original form as quotations (ad
depositum
zložený
byl
-
do
úschovy).
Personal and local names,
especially in listings of inhabitants and land holdings, are also
valuable aids in learning about the Czech language of the past.
The language of the chronicle is affected by dialectal forms of the
so-called Southern subgroup of East-Moravian dialects prevalent
in the region of
Slovácko:
the prefix
ne-
instead of
ně-
in indefinite
pronouns
(nejaká),
double pronunciation of the consonant
between two vowels
(zlattých),
the -i ending instead of -e in the
locative singular of hard masculine nouns
(na placi
instead of na
place), the forms of nominative plural of live masculine nouns
{hvězdáře, mlynáře)
and others. However, the dialectic elements
are not numerous.
The Czech text of
Ležák
s
Memorial Book is written in the so-
called Neo-Gothic cursive, i.e. in the script that prevailed in
Czech manuscripts into the first half of the 19th century.
