Beschreibung: | The dominant form of Ottoman pictorial art until the eighteenth century, miniatures have traditionally been studied as reflecting the socio-historical contexts, aesthetic concerns and artistic tastes of the era within which they were produced. Begum Ozden Fyrat proposes instead a radical re-reading of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century miniatures in the light of contemporary critical theory, highlighting the viewer's encounter with the image. Encounters with the Ottoman Miniature employs contemporary concepts such as the gaze, frame/framing, reading and re-reading, drawing on thinkers such as Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes and Gilles Deleuze to establish the vibrant cultural agency of miniature paintings. With analysis that illuminates both the social and political situations in which these miniatures were painted as well as emphasising the miniature's contemporary relevance, Firat presents an important new re-imagining of this art form. |

The dominant form of Ottoman pictorial art until the eighteenth century,
miniatures have traditionally been studied as reflecting the socio-historical
contexts, aesthetic concerns and artistic tastes of the era within which they
were produced* Begum Ozden Firat proposes instead a radical re-reading of
seventeenth- and eighteenth-century miniatures in the light of contemporary
critical theory, highlighting the viewers encounter with the image* Encounters
with the Ottoman Miniature employs contemporary concepts such as the gaze,
frame/framing, reading and re-reading, drawing on thinkers such as Walter
Benjamin, Roland Barthes and Gilles Deleuze to establish the vibrant cultural
agency of miniature paintings*
In a close reading of a variety of miniatures, Firat re-examines these historical
images as objects of encounter which can teach us how to think, speak and write
about society and art in the present day* Firat has deliberately chosen works
which are representative of the material and conceptual shifts brought about by
the modernising trends of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century and
images which cover a wide span of existing trends, styles and genres. Demonstrating
that the visual idiom of Ottoman miniatures should be understood as a site of
cross-cultural encounters, Firat repositions the seventeenth and eighteenth
centuries - traditionally seen as the ‘declining period’ of the medium - as an
age of experimentation with new expressive forms. Additionally, she bolsters her
argument by analysing contemporary works by Orhan Pamuk (such as My Name
is Red) and cinematographer Dervis Zaim (such as Waiting for Heaven) for their
engagement with miniature painting and their development of a novel language
conditioned by that tradition*
j
With analysis that illuminates both the social and political situations in
which these miniatures were painted as well as emphasising the miniatures
contemporary relevance, Firat presents an important new re-imagining of this
art form.
