SUMMARY
This book presents the studies of some key problems of Upper Paleolith in the northern
Black Sea steppes
—
the chronology of sites, the division of development of technology tra¬
ditions and human adaptations (subsistence practices, lifestyles and settlement systems of
hunter groups).
History of research of Upper Paleolith of North Black Sea region is summarized for the
last century (chapter
1).
The data from the paleogeographical reconstructions of the devel¬
opment of the Late Pleistocene environments according to main East European geochro-
nology charts is cited. The composition and features of resources
-
objects of hunting is
determined (chapter
2).
The main results of researches of Amvrosievka complex that came true under the direc¬
tion of author during the last twenty five years are published (chapters
3).
The chronology of sites and division of development of cultural-technology traditions
into periods of time of Upper Paleolith of region are represented (chapter
4).
The steppe
sites concordantly data of relative and absolute dating are subdivided on three chronological
groups, that the basic stages settling of region are presented.
The development in the region of three basic cultural traditions and technical manners of
manufacturing of flint inventory (Szeletian, Aurignacian and Gravettian) are presented. The
features of origin and development and partly coexisting of the traditions are shown on the
wide background of cultural and historical processes that took place on territory of Europe
for Upper Paleolithic.

Beginning from the last glacial maximum and for the late Glacial epoch
(19000-12000
BP) late Gravettian (Epi-Gravettian) tradition (Amvrosiivka, Anetivka II, Velyka Akarzha,
Novovolodymyrivka II, Kam jany balky I-III, Fedorivka, Dmytrivka, Janisol , Govorukha
and other) prevailed in a region. Certain local specificity of this tradition, obviously, is the
result of different origin and cultural and historical connections of her bearers. Set time they
coexisted with the bearers of late Aurignacian
(Epi- Aurignacian)
tradition.
In a Final Paleolith
(12000-10000
BP) tradition of Osokorivs ka culture (sites of
Rogalik
II A

Leontiivka) spread in a region. The bear¬
ers of this culture, maybe, were genetically related to the Epi-Gravettian population.
Cultural adaptations (socio-economic structure) of Upper Paleolithic society of North¬
ern Black Sea steppes are investigated (chapter
5).
On the base of analysis of archaeological
and paleontological materials, reconstructions of environments and ethnographic data the
models of past human adaptations of region are created.
Besides certain methodological approaches, in particular, the theories of strategies of op¬
timal subsistence and hunter-gatherers mobility
[Winterhaider, 1981;
Binford,
1980;
Kelly,
1983]
are used. Some thesis of the theories can to explain the mechanism of adaptation of
populations groups to the changes in the environment.
The specific of adaptations is determined by subsistence strategies and life-style (types
of mobility) of hunter groups, settlement systems and flexible social organization that had
certain distinctions on the different chronologic stages depending on natural terms and the
features of resources.
Hunters early
(36000-26000
BP) and, partly, middle
(23000-20000
BP) the chronologic
stages, that was answered by cool and, sometimes, humid enough natural terms with steppe
and, partly, forest-steppe vegetation mostly strategies of the unspecialized hunting practiced
on large herbivores of different species
-
bison, horse and episodically
-
mammoth, woolly
rhinoceros, reindeer, red and giant deer. In life-style resident mobility prevailed with the
frequent change of place of stay of base camp, the habitants
ofthat was
separate family (pro¬
ductive group) or small community.
Last one third of the middle chronologic stage
(20000-17000
BP) corresponded with the
cold maximum of the late Valdai epoch with a predominant cold and dry climate and open
landscapes with steppe vegetation. Paleontologists consider that this period was marked by a
high density of large herbivores, first of all, bison.
The specialized bison hunting predominated in subsistence strategies of population at this
time. The bisons remains average
88%
of faunal remains in the collections of Amvrosiivka,
Anetivka II, Velyka Akarzha, Novovolodymyrivka II, Zolotivka I sites.
From the ethnographic data, the high density of prey formed the basis of a regular driving
seasonal hunting and storage strategy that gave the large hunter groups (to a few communi¬
ties) an opportunity to live near food storage places during the whole season.

Thus, the adaptation of hunter groups in this period are defined by specialized bison
hunting, predominance of a logistical mobility in life-style, and a relatively stable social re¬
lationship.
The late chronologic stage
( 17000-10000
BP) coincides with the late glacial epoch with
extreme fluctuating climatic condition, that created stress situations in a natural environ¬
ment, that resulted in considerable changes in composition a fauna, reduction of sizes of
large herbivores and their density.
Hunting strategies of this time, according to specific and quantitative composition of
the fauna presented on sites, maybe, set time were yet based on the specialized hunts of
enough large groups of bison and horse (Kam jana
balka
II, lev II). The habitants of other
sites mostly hunted on the single animals of both species (Dmytrivka, Kaistrova
balka
I)
or one of them: bison (Kam jana
balka
I, Mynivsky
Iar,
Kaistrova
balka
III, IV) and horse
(Govorukha). On the sites of
Rogalik—
Peredel skoie group from three basic species of large
herbivores (horse, bison, reindeer) the basic object of hunting was a horse.
Thus, during the late chronologic stage in hunting strategy of population of region the
role of specialized hunting gradually exhausted. The residential mobility in life-style and a
relatively poor development of social relationship, maybe, predominated.
Classification of the sites of steppe zone is proposed. The subdivision of the sites rest on
mainly of ethnoarchaeological data for the hunters-gatherers of high and temperate lati¬
tudes [Binford,
1983].
There are three types of sites: relatively large long-term (seasonal)
base camps; small short-term base camps; locations of the having a special purpose setting
(kill-sites and/or places of butchering of hunter bag, workshops of flint, and others like that).
If the first type of sites (base camp) and most the different locations, mainly, characteristic
for life-style with logistic mobility, then the second type
-
for resident mobility.
The projectile weapon of hunters on large herbivores of region, in according to the recon¬
struction of D. Nuzhnij
[2008],
on early and middle the chronologic stages there were spears
and darts with different types of tips. The hunters of Szeletian tradition used lithic trianglular
and leaf-shaped «faceted points»; the hunters of Epi-Aurignacian tradition
-
the organic
materials points (antler, bone) with the scales-like lateral flint insets; the hunters of Gravet-
tian tradition
-
the tips in form of backed microlithic points and the organic materials points
with backed lateral insets fixed with resin. On the late chronologic stage already mostly used
a bow with arrows that equipped by geometrical microliths (segments, triangles, trapezoids).
