The Second World War has never been
Jerzy
Kochanowski s main area of
interest, but it was certainly his first, and it remains important to him. The
first text in this collection, which describes the production of hand grenades
during the Warsaw Uprising, was written in
1983
and appeared a year later
in the
émigré
Zeszyty Literackie
in Paris. Subsequent pieces are derived from
a variety of research projects and topics and include Warsaw s early post-war
years, Admiral
Miklós Horthy s
rule in Hungary, forced migrations during
and after the war, German civilians and soldiers in post-war Poland, Polish-
East German relations, the Polish black market in
1945-89
and foreigners liv¬
ing in Warsaw after
1945.
This book is only an assortment of Kochanowski s writings that touch on
the Second World War differently, ranging from causes to evolution and con¬
sequences. Their choice was guided, firstly, by their contemporary appeal;
secondly, by an interest in showing the historian s progression through the
methodological and thematic milestones of the last three decades and, third¬
ly, by a focus on displaying examples of the range of his historical writings:
research-based publications, annotated collections of documents, reviews, ar¬
ticles for general audiences and journalism. The last three types were picked
out of the
Polityka
and
Gazeta Wyborcza
newspapers. There are no pieces here
that originally appeared in such different newspapers and periodicals as
Rzec¬
zpospolita,, Mówią Wieki, Więź, Karta, Przegląd Polityczny
or
Borussia.
The
selection of academic texts also does not include those published in
Przegląd
Historyczny, Przegląd Socjologiczny, Przegląd Humanistyczny, Łambinowicki
Rocznik Muzealny
or in edited volumes.
Some of the writings included here stem from Kochanowski s passing inter¬
est in a specific topic, stimulated by a reading ( A different face of Yalta ) or
a single document stumbled upon in an archive, which drove him to conduct
broader and deeper research (essays about Poles recruited into the
Wehrmacht,
Adolfina Pfeiffer,
letters to Hans Frank or the appeal from the Jews of Nad-
vorna). Others commemorated anniversaries (the Battle of
Lenino
or
1939)
or
were contributions to contemporary discussions. Some were a one-time ex¬
ploit, others a re-evaluation of an issue after some years and from a brand new

perspective.
This was the case with
Ulbricht
and the others , which appeared
in
Polityka
in
1990
and kindled
Kochanowski
s
interest in prisoners of war
in Poland and led him to write a monograph about them in
2001.
Some texts,
for instance remembering the Eastern Borderlands, forced migrations or the
Volksdeutsche,
were detours from books being written or research projects
underway, while others were planned as university lectures or discrete articles
and were later incorporated into larger works (e. g., the black market). The ma¬
jority of the selections here originally appeared in Polish, and two (the legend
of General
Karol Świerczewski,
Volksdeutsche) in
German.
Since the intention of the book was to give testimony to the time at which
the pieces were written and the path taken by this historian, the text were not
altered or updated by, for example, taking into account subsequent publica¬
tions. Only spelling and major stylistic mistakes were corrected.
The editors chose to organize the publications thematically, and not chrono¬
logically, from the roots of the war to its course and its wide-ranging, often
long-term and astonishing, consequences. But since it was not always possible
to adhere to these neat divisions, some of the texts spill out of them. This
structure has the advantage of creating thematic blocs, such as the GDR or the
Volksdeutsche,
by bringing together writings that came into being in different
years, even centuries!
The title of this book is taken from
Jerzy
Kochanowski s early
2009
evalu¬
ation of the programmatic premises of the Museum of the Second World War
in
Gdańsk.
According to
Kochanowski,
the museum should present more than
a martyrology of the Polish nation or [become] a museum of the glory of the
Polish armed forces . It should have a universal appeal showing the war s deep
roots and far-reaching effects. It should show that the war was fought not only
in trenches and in general staffs, but also in private homes, and that a villain or
two would surface occasionally alongside heroes. This perspective exemplifies
Kochanowski s view of history. Let us hope that this selection of his texts from
1984-2013
also represents an accurate rendition of his thinking.
