Abstract
A highly regarded historian of Romanian literature, a
critic who enjoyed a wide and undisputed authority between the
two World Wars, E. Lovinescu
(1881-1943)
is also an artist
whose work includes several novels, a few plays and fantasies
(studies or sketches in prose). However, his artistic creation is
generally looked down on as a sort of

specimen failure; in
spite of its quantitative importance, his literature did not meet
with the public s general enthusiasm; on the contrary, putting
aside the author s fame, the scholars kept themselves at bay,
being reserved in giving any verdicts. The Genesis of Form...
seeks to undo the laboratory experiments of an enigmatic writer
who, but for writing it, used to know everything about literature.
Thus, the book does not represent, in a restrictive way, an
instance of genetic criticism, prone to locate and restore only
the pre-publication variants. On the contrary, it aims to inquest
-
in a complex and subtle manner, at the same time
-
the issue
of subjective taste, which should have determined the evolution
and aesthetics of literary forms along the prose writer s
biographic course.
In any case, the present study does not give up the
chronologic perspective, as long as it still provides a complete
picture of form changes and dislodgements within E.
Lovinescu
s
creation. First, one has to bear in mind the passage

occurred before
1910,
from voyage accounts to theatre plays.
Secondly, the analysis evinces the way small prose pieces cake
together and turn into novels, in the beginning of the
20 .
In the
third place, it is worth speaking about an even larger process,
implying the aggregation of several novels into great prose cycles,
around
1935.
Once drawn this inward evolution of form
-

form that is put to trial and succeeds in passing over multiple
lintels
-
the inquest follows to recast both Lovinescu
s
justifi¬
cations and his writing practices. For instance, at his debut, the
freshman in the world of letters considers literature as a com¬
monplace
fait de
style, emerged from pure transcription of
livelihood. Practically, this is what explains the short story
writer s taste either for the use of
clichés
and pure fabrication of
sentences, or for seeking refuge into voyage memories. The
thro wing-down of evocation literature in fiction s favour is an
event that happens later on, as an effect of a theatrical enga¬
gement, namely the full time experience of melodrama. This
discovery corresponds to Lovinescu s interest for theatre, deve¬
loped after
1906
and going further to the middle of the
20
(with
a spell of success), up to the end of the Romanian critic s career.
Actually, from now on, melodrama and its formal constraints
would find themselves in all Lovinescu s literary recipes, no
matter their genre or dimension. Long after its resolute repla¬
cement with a new prose form (the novel), the theatrical creation
and, generally, melodrama, keep on being the artist s favourite
literary pattern.
To the point, the persistence of theatrical form in the
core of Lovinescu s novel writing appears to be justified by its
long-lasting emotional strength. By contrast to the classical
tragedy, which rests on a hierarchy of imitation, melodrama
goes after the effect produced within the bosom of audiences.

Abstract
Consequently, this is a matter of turning around the references.
Instead of a fiction that, by building on complex codes, enables
the transposition of reality into artistic figures, melodrama engages
fiction only to that extent it can stir the public s emotions. This
is what we might call a drift of the literary work towards its
reader response, of the literary character towards its spectator,
and, in general terms, of scene towards life. This mutation
individualizes the last part of the 19th century and corresponds
to an aesthetics reshaped according to democratic values. The
creator who himself used to be in control on the way his work
had been being processed is replaced now by the emancipated
user , self-assured equally by his own likings and by his
emotional capacities. What should last as an overall impression
is the fact that E. Lovinescu sticks to melodrama and that he
surely bets his creative resources on it. In all his fiction works
-
be it Romanesque, biographical or autobiographical textures
-
the Romanian critic shall seek to stage on and reproduce the
conditions of some affective reaction.
