Exploration and photographing of medieval
monuments between the two world wars
The National Museum in Belgrade, within its Documentation Centre, preserves a rich collection
of photographs of medieval churches and monasteries from the territories of Serbia, Macedonia,
Montenegro, Herzegovina, Dalmatia and Greece (Mount Athos). There are more than seven thousand
photographic plates, which were recorded in the period from 1907 to the beginning of World War II. The
photographs from the territory of Kosovo and Metohija number around one thousand five hundred, the
majority of which are the photographs of the architecture and paintings of the katholikon of the Monastery
of Decani, and of its treasury.
A team of the National Museum, headed by the then director, Vladimir Petkovič, carried out the
first campaign of exploration and photographing of monuments in the territory of Kosovo, Banjška
and Gračanica - in 1920. By 1927, the exploration of medieval monuments had intensified to encom-
pass also those in Kosovo and Metohija (Decani Monastery, The Patriarchate of Peč, Budisavci Mon-
astery, the Church of the Virgin Ljeviška and the Church of Holy Ascension in Prizren). This activity
continued throughout the period between 1935 and the start of World War II, when the task was del-
egated to experts of the Prince Paul Museum, which was formed through the merger of the National
Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art. However, the difference from the previous period
was that the campaigns of photographing monuments no longer included their scientific exploration.
The sites photographed during this period were Gračanica, The Patriarchate of Peč and, particularly
Dečani Monastery, where due to the restoration of the Dečani katholikon scaffolding had been erect-
ed, which made it possible to photograph the less accessible parts of the church.
Nowadays, this collection is an inexhaustible source of information and an unavoidable instru-
ment in the study of architecture and painting of the above mentioned monuments. At the same time
this collection is an equally important document about the state of the monuments before, during
and after the restorations performed between the two world wars.
N.B. In 2010, in cooperation between the National Museum and the Committee for Art History
of the Serbian Academy of Arts and Science, the glass plate negatives of the photographs of monu-
ments in the territory of Kosovo and Metohija were digitalised for their preservation.

Archaeological testimonies
At the beginning of the 11th century, after the collapse of Samuels state, the region of Kosovo and
Metohija fell under the authority of Byzantium. Two new epicopacies were founded then, located in
Prizren and Lipljan, and both were under the jurisdiction of the Ohrid Archbishopic. A new, important
period in the history of this area began with the rise of Stefan Nemanja to the rank of Grand Zhupan. The
fulfilment of his ambition to expand his authority to all the Serbian lands began with his victory against his
brother, Tihomir, and the suspension of hostilities with Byzantium. It was then that the region of Kosovo
and Metohija (except Prizren) became an integral part of Serbia. With the rise to power of Stefan Ne-
manja, the town of Prizren and the Prizren area joined the Serbian state. After these events, the region of
Kosovo and Metohija became the centre of the Serbian state. The first demonstration of the Serbian rulers’
need to bind the ecclesiastical authority to that of the state began with the relocation of the first diocese
from Žica to Peč at the end of the 13th century, and it was accomplished in 1346, with its elevation to the
rank of a Patriarchy.
In order to protect the newly acquired territories, secure the borders, roads, squares and mining
centres, the courts of the rulers and the nobility, and the monastic centres, the Serbian rulers erected
numerous fortifications: Novo Brdo, Zvečan, Hisar, Visegrad, Idvorac, Vrhlaba and others. Informa-
tion about this part of the past is still preserved in charters, Turkish tax registers and toponyms. The
few archaeological explorations, which started with unearthing the locality of the Monastery of the
Holy Archangels near Prizren, in 1927, under the management of Professor Radoslav Grujič, and the
explorations of the Institute for the Protection of the Culture of Kosovo in Priština, founded in 1953,
only resulted in drawing attention to the wealth and diversity of the material culture.
The collections of the Medieval Department of the National Museum in Belgrade contain items
(architectural plastics, personal religious items, dishes and jewellery) that depict everyday life and art
in the region of Kosovo and Metohija. One of the very important mining centres in Europe at that
time, Novo Brdo, provides a great opportunity for the reconstruction of life in a medieval city, with
the abundance of material that was discovered there.

Collecting icons
After the loss of state independence (1459), in the altered historical circumstances, the figure of the
ruler was replaced by that of the patriarch. In the second half of the 16th century, the prelates on the
patriarchal throne in Peć were from the Sokolović family, whose members also ranked among the Otto-
man Empires top officials, and later, in the 17th century, Patriarch Pajsije, whose effective and dedicated
administration of the Peć See was accompanied by intense renewal. In those two centuries, the foundation
was laid of a particularly inventive redevelopment of the painting from the first decades of the 14th century,
a period when Serbian medieval painting was fully articulated in the sense of superb academic aesthetic
expression. For the Serbian prelates in the time of Ottoman rule, the cornerstone in tradition was adhe-
rence to the foundations laid by St. Sava Nemanjic. The centres in which the old artistic forms were kept
were primarily the large monasteries, such as the Peć Patriarchate, Dećani, Gračanica, Studenica, Žica,
Mileševa, Morača, and many others, as well as the monasteries on Mount Athos in Greece. The paint-
ers of the 16th and 17th centuries, such as Longin, Andrija Rajičević, Jovan, Georgije Mitrofanović, Radul
and those whose names are unknown, with great artistic skill interpreted the iconographie programmes
they designed, according to the wishes of the ktetors, together with their spiritual guides, became the chief
protagonists of cultural renewal. They were the creators of a unique style cultivated within the Serbian
Orthodox Church.
In the collection from the Peć Patriarchate at the National Museum in Belgrade, are three icons
from the Church of St. Nikola. They constitute a stylistic unity with the icons from the iconostasis of
this little church, which the painter Radul had been comissioned to execute by Patriarch Maksim in
1677. The icons in the National Museum are attributed to two of Raduls associates. The church icon,
on which the composition of the Transfiguration is painted, originates from Budisavac, the monas-
tery with the Church of the Transfiguration, a metochion of the Peć Patriarchate. Superbly executed,
the icons painted surface was significantly damaged and so its stylistic chronological determination
remains in the realm of various assumptions as to when it appeared - from the end of the 14th, or in
the 15th and 16th centuries. An icon of the apostles originates from the monastery of Gračanica, which
belonged to the old Gračanica iconostasis. Three more icons of the apostles and an icon of Christ
from the same ensemble are kept in the monastery treasury. An icon dyptich, the front side of which
depicts the Crucifixion and the other side the Deposition from the Cross, originates from the mon-
astery of Decani and was painted by the well-known 16th century Serbian painter, Longin.
A metochion of the monastery of Decani, the Gorioč monastery with its Church of St. Nikola
near Pec, keeps an icon of St. Nicholas, probably from the iconostasis dating from the 17th century.
In the National Museum there are nine large and mostly very damaged icons from the Church of St.
Nikola in Čabič. The best preserved is the big central icon of Christ Pantocrator. Judging by the size
and the stylistic and technical resemblance, its twin is the icon of the Mother of God Hodegitria with
Christ. The third in the group is a large icon on which the apostles Peter and Paul are holdibng the
model of a church between them. The icons of the next unity (the figure of St. George on horseback,
St. Nikola and the Hospitality of Abraham) reveal a link with 17th century Russian art. The icon of St.
Stefan Dečanski and two icons of the Mother of God with Christ seem to be of a more recent date.
A plaque bearing the image of the prophet Jeremiah, in the robes of an archpriest, carved in the 17lh
century from one block of wood, and decorated with vine leaves along the frame, can be considered
an example of traditional wood-carving.
The 16th and 17th century icons from Kosovo and Metohija in the collection of the National Mu-
seum in Belgrade, constitute a group of 16 icons. They originate from the treasuries of the great roy-
al and episcopal monasteries and their metochia. The large monasteries in Kosovo and Metohija
have more or less preserved their treasuries till the present day, so that the icons from the National
Museum only complement an already, largely preserved fund. That is why the icons from the small
churches, the metochia of large monasteries, are items of particular value. The icons from Budisavac,
Gorioč and Čabič from the collection of the National Museum in Belgrade, represent a significant
addition to the total fund that has been preserved, and a source for learning more about Serbian icon
painting in the 16th and 17th centuries.
