(Summary)
The region of
Šariš
is situated in the culturally developed north-west area of
Hungary. Thanks to the three free Royal towns in this region there were always exist¬
ent schools since the Middle Ages (from the 14th century onwards). This is also shown
by the students studying at the universities of Vienna and Krakow. A strong stimulus
for the massive development of education was the Agreement of the Reformation by
the towns
(Prešov, Bardejov
and
Sabinov),
as well as by the
Šariš
aristocracy before the
first half of
Іб"1
century.
In
Bardejov,
the first Lutheran education laws were developed by the principal
of the local school. Thanks to the Reformation the town schools became developed
academic secondary grammar schools and smaller secondary grammar schools and
they were influential in the area
(Brezovica, Veľký Šariš, Lipany, Hanušovce).
Apart
from those, other provincial parish schools were also established. The most important
educational institution in the period of the early Modern Ages was the Evangelic Col¬
lege in
Prešov,
the first evangelical college in the country, which with some breaks was
active between
1673 - 1711.
In the
18*
century the evangelical colleges were replaced by
Catholic ones due to the Counter-Reformation, of which the most important were the
Jesuit secondary grammar school in
Prešov
and the Piarist secondary grammar school
in
Sabinov.
The period of tolerance during the 19th century brought the renewal of the
Evangelic College in
Prešov
as well as the formation of the modern Greco-Catholic
and Jewish educational system. The College once again became the central educational
institution, not just for the city of
Prešov
but for the whole region of
Šariš.
It merged
the higher secondary grammar school the training-college and most of the Law and
the Evangelic Theological Academy. It operated in this fashion until
1918
when it was
gradually reduced to an eight-class secondary grammar school due to the changing
political landscape. The second college in this area was the Greco-Catholic seminary,
established in
1880.
Apart from approximately two hundred and fifty elementary
and burgher schools, there were also a couple of secondary grammar schools, three
training-colleges an agricultural school and other vocational schools. In spite of the
existence of a college in the
Šariš
area during the 17th and 19th centuries, the majority
of its educated citizens, similarly to other areas in Hungary, received its education at
universities or colleges abroad.
In the Middle and Modern Ages a total of
1354
students from the region of
Šariš
registered for university studies. At present research is still being carried out on
evidence from the 19th century, so up to a certain point the number of students will

increase, but this will not have any influence on the results and trends. During the
period of
1450 - 1525
the process of peregrination and travelling was steady. From the
countrywide point of view, after
1500
there was a decrease in numbers, but this was
not notably retlected in
Šariš.
Similarly, as in the rest of the country, the students from
Šariš
registered at the two college institutions, namely the universities of Krakow and
Vienna.
In the Middle Ages the two most important towns in the region (with regards
to place of origin) were
Prešov
and
Bardejov.
In the period before
Mohács,
Bardejov
surpassed
Prešov
and sent six more students to study abroad. Out of
71
students from
Bardejov
67
studied in Krakow and only
2
were accepted in Vienna. An additional
student from
Bardejov
was registered at the university of Prague and one went to study
in Leipzig, where they were the only students at these universities from the whole
Šariš
region. The first student from
Prešov,
Thomas
de Apperies
registered at the university
in Krakow in
1418.
Out of
65
students from
Prešov,
59
registered in Krakow, five in
Vienna and one studied in Italy.
Though the Turkish attack did not reach
Šariš,
the influence of the Reforma¬
tion manifested itself very clearly. In the following quarter century there were only four
students who registered in Krakow and in
1531,
the first student from
Šariš,
Leonard
Stöckel
Bardfensis studied in Wittenberg. By
1550,
a total of
6
students have registered.
In the third quarter of the 16th century there was a visible growth in peregrination,
which then stopped in the last quarter of the century and the number of students at
foreign universities did not significantly grow during the 17th century. Only at the end
of the century did the numbers of students reach the levels seen in the Middle Ages.
The uniqueness of
Šariš
was that the

century data about peregrination did not
show any growth, and by the second half of the century the number of students was
still decreasing.
The true growth of studies at foreign universities began in the 19th century.
In the first quarter of the century relatively few students registered at the university in
Vienna, but at the beginning of the Reformation period the numbers started to equal
those of the rest of the country. In the given period students could not study beyond
the borders of the Empire due to the Napoleonic wars and then because of the decision
of the Carlsbad conference, consequently the interest of students from
Šariš
in the uni¬
versity of Lvov increased. In the first quarter of the 19th century only

students man¬
aged to be accepted by German universities. After
1825,
one third of
Šariš
peregrinates
studied at the university in Vienna and at another two schools in the city, in total more
than two thirds of students from
Šariš
studied in the imperial city.

The real turning
point
came in the second half of the 19th century, when in a
25
year period more than four hundred students registered to study at universities abroad.
So in these fifty years more students have gone to study abroad than in the whole of
the 17th and
ie"1
centuries combined. In the second half of 19th century almost
20%
of
peregrinates from
Šariš
were registered at a foreign university, which in the case of
Šariš
was proof of increased status. At that time several names of students from
Šariš
at German technical universities and other technical schools can be uncovered. In the
first two decades of the 20th century there were a total of
100
registrations, which can
be increased with the addition of the French data. Clear proof of the development can
be seen in the fact that
47%
of students studied outside the country, and there was also
a movement towards a more modern and developed post-graduate system. Here it is
also necessary to note that during this time, there were many students from
Šariš,
who
had already studied at the domiciliary universities and colleges. From this we can also
deduce that the interest in studying abroad at the beginning of the 20th century had
stabilized. The students from
Šariš
altogether studied at
110
institutions, although the
peregrination from the region went in different directions, the predominant destina¬
tions were the Polish, German and Empire universities.
The majority of students from
Šariš
studied at
21
European universities. These
universities were host to
83%
of students from
Šariš.
When we investigate this type of
institution,

out of the
21
universities were Viennese educational institutions, (includ¬
ing the military academy and the academy of army medical practice). The university
in Krakow was second on the list owing to a high attendance rate during the Middle
Ages.
With regards to the nationality of the students, from the period after
Mohács
there are
564
known cases where the students have stated their nationality in their
registration (which is
48.7%).
These figures come from registers after
1850,
where the
native language of students was recorded. Before
1848
the information is not as clear.
In this case the titles Ungarus, Hungarus and Pannonus were mainly used which is
problematic because these titles do not reveal much information about the students.
It may be assumed, that
33%
of students at foreign universities had German
nationality. In the 16th
-

centuries this figure reached
52%,
before decreasing. In
the Modern Ages we find students from
Šariš
having Hungarian nationality in second
place, who made up
26%.
In this case there are no striking differences between per¬
egrination before and after
1800,
in each period the rate remained constant. Almost
half of the Hungarian students attended the university in Vienna, and

studied
at universities and colleges outside the Kingdom. In third place, with
19%,
were the

students of Slovak nationality, where it is difficult to determine their ethnicity from
the sources. In the university records

of them are recorded with the term "Slavus",

recorded as "Pannonus", apart from that there are
43
others who were recorded as
"Hungarus", but were in fact apparently Slovak in origin. Using the example of these
three ethnic groups it is clear, that before
1800
the local students, called themselves
"Hungarus" or "Pannonus", so they were aware of the unified appellation "Hungarus",
which included all three ethnic groups.
64%
of Slovak students studied at universities
within the kingdom,
62
of them were registered in Germany. Also in the case of Slovak
students the majority were students of theology, at least
91
of them studied Catholic or
Protestant theology.
On the basis of this data it is possible to state, that
Prešov
was the only town
in
Šariš,
from which the students continually and in increasing numbers left to study
abroad. This was the reason, why we focused our work on the peregrination from this
town. In the Middle Ages
Prešov
maintained the 25th place among Hungarian towns
in terms of peregrination, which is a very distinguished placement, as
Prešov
was above
many important Episcopal towns.
Reformation also caused a change in the direction of attendance with regards
to universities abroad from
Prešov.
The first student from
Prešov
appeared in Wit¬
tenberg in the year
1550;
however the presence of students in Wittenberg, as well as
at other German universities has been continuous since this period. Until the end of

century, with the exception of two students registered in Leipzig, one in Krakow
and one in Vienna, all students from
Prešov
attended the university in Wittenberg.
However, the peregrination of students from
Prešov
in the 17th century already shows
a much more varied picture.

students were registered at the Jesuit institution in Vi¬
enna,
Graz, Klagenfurt,
Olomouc
and one more at the
Polis Zamość.

students from
Prešov
registered at Polish academic secondary grammar schools in Torun, Gdansk
and
Elbląg.
At the beginning of the century, four students studied law in Italy and phi¬
losophy in Padua and Sienna. In this century
35
students from
Prešov
were registered
at German universities.
Following the summary of all registrations from the years
1526 - 1800
we can
see that
Prešov
holds the 18th position on the list of all Hungarian towns with regards
to peregrination. The number of registered students at German universities increased
-
out of
46
students the majority studied in Jena. The 19th century also brought changes
in the peregrination of the students from
Prešov.
In this century more students
(233)
registered for the studies abroad, than in the previous
3
centuries
(212).
On the basis of
contemporary registrations from the years
1801-1918
Prešov
was granted the 2?h place
with regards to students who studied at the universities abroad, which also highlights

the development in other towns, was even more intensive. In this century the routes
of students from
Prešov
started to head towards the Imperial city
- 113
students were
registered at the university in Vienna and the total including other Viennese institu¬
tions was
182
students.
In the case of
Prešov
from the point of view of the social structure, we can
observe the slowly emerging civil society in the 19th century, where the traditional
aristocratic class no longer played the most important role. The town was notable be¬
cause of the coexistence of various ethnic groups, and the relatively high proportion of
intelligence which, with regards to their choice of professional direction and choice of
profession painted a different picture from the rest of the country.
