SUMMARY
The subject of our research was identity of Muslims i.e. Bosniaks
in Bosnia and Herzegovina during
1980s.
We wanted to compre¬
hend the relationship between national and religious identity, im¬
portance of both of them, their co-dependence and conflicts, and to find
the answer to the following question: To what extent were religious and
national identities of Bosniaks combined into a single identity?
Closer studying of this issue has proven itself to be a complex task,
featuring several difficulties such as unavailable, disorganised archive docu¬
ments, lack of literature and studies on identity issues in
1980s,
inadequacy
of theoretic patterns, etc. Due to the complexity of the subject, we decided
to divide the matter of religious
-
national identity of Bosniaks into three
main aspects.
Analyzing the archive documents, we wanted to see what was the opini¬
on of the socialist government regarding the relationship between religious
and national identity of Bosniaks. In those days, the government perceived
Muslim nationalism and its interactions with the culture and religion as
extremely dangerous. Islamic Community was believed to be the headqu¬
arters of religious and national identity, and the available documents of the
Communist party show evidence of careful monitoring and control over its
activities with an aim to weaken its social influence. The weakening of the
religious identity was supposed to diminish the importance of the religious
segment of Bosniaks'national identity.
The second segment analysed was the influence of the Islamic Commu¬
nity on the modelling of
Bosniak
identity in
1980s.
We searched publicati¬
ons issued by the Islamic Community trying to see to what extent did in¬
ternal circles of the Community contribute to merging of the religious and

national
identity into one, during the fall of the socialist system? We have
concluded that the Islamic Community of the
'80s
was clearly submitted
to the government and it focused its activities on the religious teaching and
education of clergy. However, by the late
'80s,
its discourse took different,
political dimension. Public support to the Party of Democratic Action
(SDA) during the election campaign and the first multi-party election in
1990
finally introduced the Islamic Community into the public sphere as
a significant political factor, contributing thus to the
harmonisation
of the
religious and national elements.
In the third part of this book, we analysed two identity studies on the
life of orginary people of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the
'80s.

Being Muslim the Bosnian
Wayy Identity and Community in a Central Bosnian Village. We put special
focus on the results of these studies which indicate the key elements of the
identity of Bosniaks during
'80s,
the way it was manifested, its key compo¬
nents, the relationship between the religious and national identity, the way
it is built and who is to maintain it! The studies led us to the conclusion
that, despite the years of government attempts to separate nationality from
religion, the
Bosniak
identity of the
'80s
is religious, not non-religious;
religion is seen as a constitutive and key element of the
Bosniak
nation, so
that the bond between the religious and national is quite common.
Our research leads to the conclusion that religion is an integral part and
undisputable element of the national identity, and thus the sliding of the
religious and national identity of Bosniaks is evident. However, it is obvi¬
ous that by secularisation and socialist daily routine, Bosniaks drifted away
from their religion. In the
'80s,
certain religious background did not gua¬
ranty actual religious devotion of an individual since Islam was not seen in
a dogmatic way, but rather as an ortopraxy, practiced Islam, cultural herita¬
ge, a system of customs or historical legacy. In the light of the omnipresent
search for identity of the
'80s,
the return to faith is a marking the need for
symbolic determination and identification with a certain coUective. Revival
of the old, now restored religious events is an example of the work of the
Islamic Community, a reflection of religiosity and genuine piety, but also

a sign of weakening of the so-called Communist third path, the rule of
oppression, and, of course, a sign of personal curiosity. During the process
of severe diverging of nations in Bosnia and Herzegovina in
1980s,
religion
was supposed to build a strong collective identity, both religious and nati¬
onal, and not to revive spirituality of an individual.
