research has frequently linked entrepreneurial orientation (EO) to su¬
perior firm performance and found that the firm s effectiveness (e.g., firm growth)
and efficiency (e.g., profitability) benefit from this firm behavior (Wales, Gupta and
Mousa,
2011).
However, EO s positive performance implications have not always ma¬
terialized, so the majority of EO research has focused on analyzing potential modera¬
tor effects for this relationship. Despite significant advancements and considerable
work in related research, researchers continue to call for work that improves how
EO fits within existing theories. In addition, the roots of EO remain unclear, as its
antecedents have not been intensively investigated.
The present thesis leverages upper echelons theory to determine how the psycho¬
logical characteristics of CEOs serve as antecedents for EO and as moderators of
the EO-performance relationship. It also uses agency theory to clarify the impact of
CEOs monetary incentives on firms levels of EO. The derived hypotheses are tested
by means of a multi-source panel data set from secondary data of large publicly listed
firms. Thus, the thesis contributes methodically to EO research, since the vast major¬
ity of extant findings related to EO are based on cross-sectional survey research from
small to medium-sized firms that do not allow as detailed analyses as panel data do.
Results indicate that CEOs psychological characteristics substantially influence EO
and its performance consequences; however the effects strengths and directions de¬
pend considerably on external factors. The results also show that CEOs monetary
incentives can influence firms levels of EO, provided that CEOs managerial discre¬
tion is sufficient.
