The publication Freedom behind the Border
1948-1953 (Dakotas
of
„Freedom and Train to
Selb)
is focused on the issue of escapes during
a founding period of Czechoslovak communist regime between the
years
1948
and
1953,
however, it is limited to a specific point of view.
It aims to describe the background of civil airplanes and passenger
train hijacks and the subsequent response of the State Security (StB),
together within the international political context.
Because of its totalitarian and oppressive characteristics, the rise
of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia triggered several escape
waves of people searching for freedom and a new home. In fact, these
escapes for democracy, whether for economic, political or social rea¬
sons, were ever present throughout the 40-year period of Czechoslovak
communism.
The internal structure of the book has been defined by the main
theme itself, particular events, as well as by available archive material
and the current state of research. The introductory chapter contains
a concise but clear description of the internal and external progress at
the beginnings of the Czechoslovak communist era. The internal di¬
mension is represented by the political development with its specific
features, the external one by Prague s relationship to Moscow and to
Washington. The following chapter is also a preparatory one for the
key chapters of the book. It represents a brief overview of known and
unknown escapes, including hijacks of passenger and sport airplanes
at a later date. The next four chapters analyze the hijacks of the
Dakotas
on the domestic flights of the national Czechoslovak airlines by former
RAF pilots, navigators and flight engineers
-
the Westerners
-
a spe¬
cific blood type , fortified by their fight for freedom and democracy
during World War II. The last chapter has a very definitive character

to hijack a train through the barbed wire of
communist Czechoslovakia and to escape to the West.
The presented publication, particularly its five key chapters, is not
solely focused on the hijacks or escapes for freedom. Its undisputed
essence lies in the description of the subsequent steps of an essential
instrument of the regime
-
the State Security. These steps culminated
in the series of politically motivated trials and in the imprisonments of
relatives and friends of the hijackers.
The aforementioned dimension was missing amidst existing litera¬
ture until now. At the same time, this issue has never been investigated
from the Czechoslovak-American relations point of view, even though
according to the archival documents, it became a subject of official bi¬
lateral diplomacy.
Although this publication only depicts the events up until
1953,
it is
known that the escapes for freedom continued post
1953.
The
Dakotas
of Freedom and the train to
Selb
as a chapter in Czechoslovak history
clearly illustrate two opposite poles
-
the real nature of the communist
regime and the value of a life of freedom.
The triple-escape of
24
March
1950
holds exceptional positioning
among the escapes for freedom using the Czechoslovak passenger
planes, the
Dakotas.
It was highly sensationalized and an almost unbe¬
lievable escape. Within just a few minutes, three
Dakotas
of the CSA,
originally flying from Ostrava, Brno and Bratislava to Prague, landed
in Erding, Germany. There is no similar case in history. Moreover, this
was quite a blow to the Czechoslovak communist regime. These es¬
capes were planned by a small group of Czechoslovak pilots and navi¬
gators who had managed to conceal and also successfully accomplish
their journey for freedom. The attempts of the pilots

were also bril¬
liantly successful. However, the escapes of the
Dakotas
to Frankfurt
and Munich would not have been necessary if the Czechoslovak com¬
munist regime and its political police StB hadn t persecuted those who
declared principles of freedom and democracy.
For similar reasons the train hijack had no parallel in modern times
and it definitely belongs to one of the highly esteemed events welcomed
by the entire western democratic society. However, Prague evaluated
it quite differently. These stories were portrayed as acts of terrorism,
orchestrated by imperialistic rebels and spies. By this mechanism, the

government not only manipulated the public, but with the help of the
StB, also started a series of investigations, imprisonments and political
trials that affected the lives of many innocent people. The StB
-
the state
within a state
-
was a major contributor towards this sad history.
In summary, the historical facts, the political trials that followed
immediately after the
Dakotas
and the train kidnappings resulted in
twenty death sentences, in the same number of life imprisonments and
collectively in over
700
years of prison sentencing. Although these rep¬
resent only a small percentage of sentences ordered during the era of
the communist regime statistically, the truth is that every meaningless
and unauthorized accusation and sentence destroyed at least one hu¬
man life. If a human life holds the highest value, the era of the commu¬
nist regime demonstrated just how perverse the ideology was personi¬
fied in Czechoslovakia. Fortunately, this was only for a limited time.
