RESUME
1.
In
1958,
Adem Demaçi
then only
22
years old,
had published the first novel in Albanian language
in
Kosova,
with a symbolic and provocative title
for the establishment of that time,
Gjarpinjtë e
gjakut (Blood snakes). Earlier he had published
several stories in which he had manifested, besides
prominent literary talent, his concerns for the
political processes such as the forced displacement
of
Kosova
Albanians to Turkey, during
1956
and
1957.
In addition, he had distinguished himself in
the newspaper Rilindja with his critical
statements on tortures against Albanians during the
notorious action of weapons collection by the
Serbian/Yugoslav government, when hundreds and
thousands of Albanians were tortured, thousands
were crippled and many hundred killed under
torture.
Therefore, because of
Adem Demaçi
s
writings,
because of his opinions on the situation of
Albanians in Yugoslavia following the World War
II, his refusal to become a member of the Yugoslav
385
Communist Party, and similar actions, he had
become a concern for the communist party and for
the state security service
-
UDB. In such
circumstances, the only decision by the
Serbian/Yugoslav government was the imprisonment
of
Adem Demaçi,
which was to be used as a form of
pressure and intimidation against the newly formed
Albanian intelligence in
Kosova.
Adem Demaçi
is imprisoned in
1958
and is
sentenced to
5
years in prison by the District Court
in Prishtina. The talented writer and rebellious
22
year old boy, during the interrogation in the
Yugoslav state security, and during the trial, had
openly expressed his irredentist views. He had
unequivocally stated that
Kosova
and other
Albanian territories under Yugoslav administration,
i.e., Albanian lands in Macedonia, Montenegro, and
Presheva Valley, should separate from Yugoslavia
and reunite with Albania, or as he used to say with
Mother Albania.
2.
Adem Demaçi
is first released from prison in
1961.
As he would say, many years later the
situation in which he had found Prishtina and
Kosova
resembled a place after a powerful
earthquake. There was nothing new in the lives of
Albanians. The Serbian/Yugoslav occupation had
only spread its roots deeper. There was a total lack
386
of any hope.
Demaçi,
after numerous conversations
with his collaborators and friends decides to form
the organization
Lëvizja
Revolucionáře
per
Bashkimin
e Shqiptarëve
(LRBSH)
-
The
Revolutionary Movement for the Unification of
Albanians. The organization is formed in
1963
in
the town of Mitrovica. In a short time he drafted
the Program and the Statute of LRBSH. In a record
time LRBSH forms its branches in
Prishtinë,
Mitrovicê , Pejë, Gjakovë, Gjilan, Shkup, and
Istanbul. The
program
of the Organization was
of
typical irredentist
nature,
envisaging the use of all
means (peaceful, diplomatic, and armed struggle,
for the unification with Albania of
Kosova
and
other Albanian lands annexed by Yugoslavia.
After the discovery by the authorities of
LRBSH activities on
8
June
1964,
Adem Demaçi
and more than
250
members of this organization
were imprisoned. During the interrogations in the
Yugoslav security service UDB, bestial tortures are
used on the prisoners, worthy only for medieval
times and inquisition. The poet and teacher Fazli
Greiçevci,
one of the closest associates of
Adem
Demaçi,
and one of the founders of the
organization The Revolutionary Movement for the
Unification of Albanians is killed under torture. At
the end of the trial held before the District Court in
Prishtina, in the autumn of
1964,
Adem Demaçi
is
sentenced to
15
years in prison.
387
In
1964,
during the second imprisonment,
Adem Demaçi
leaves at home his mother Nazife, in
ill health and without a boy at home, in old age,
who shortly after refusing to speak in Serbian
language to his son in the Prison of Pozharevc, dies
without having the chance to see his son for the last
time.
Demaçi
also leaves behind his wife
Xhemajlie, daughter Abetare, only 15-months old
at the time, and his son Shqiptar, still unborn. There
is no end in sight for the suffering of
Adem Demaçi
in the prisons in
Prishtinë,
Mitrovica
e Sremit,
Nish, Pozharevc, etc., he still continues to think of
continuing the activities left unfinished. He
expresses this to his fellow inmates and to other
political prisoners he meets in Yugoslav prisons
who were already serving long prison terms for
irredentist activities.
3.
Adem Demaçi
is released from the second
prison term on
8
June
1974,
exactly
10
years after
the Yugoslav regime had reduced his prison
sentence from
15
to
10
years, following the fall of
the notorious anti-Albanian chauvinist
Aleksander
Rankoviq, as the vice-president of
Josip Broz
Tito.
While
Adem Demaçi
was serving his second
prison term of
10
years in Serbian/Yugoslav
prisons, there had been some minor changes in
Kosova
in the political and social life. Powerful
388
demonstrations were held in
1968,
the first anti-
Yugoslav demonstrations after the Second World
War, with the request for the Republic of
Kosova.
The University of Prishtina was founded in
1970,
with
40.000
students attending lectures there, most
of them Albanians. The Constitution of the
Province of
Kosova
was adopted in
1974,
which
had significantly advanced the constitutional
position of
Kosova
in the Yugoslav Federation,
making it a constituent element of the Federation.
Although these positive changes had occurred,
the irredentist, national liberation movement did
not cease its activities. On the contrary. All those
improvements that had taken place in
Kosova,
as
will be seen quickly after, were in essence only
conjuctural and cosmetic changes, and had not
created the sense of complacency among
Albanians. Historic facts suggest that during those
years of some minor liberalization in
Kosova,
the
activities of the Albanian National Movement,
known as the Illegal Movement, had intensified
even more. Now, eminent personalities had
appeared in this Movement, such as Rexhep Mala,
Kadri Zeka,
ílmi
Ramadani, Hydajet Hyseni,
Mehmet
Hajrizi, etc. As a result of these
developments in the political scene of the time,
posters and banners containing political-patriotic
slogans were distributed in
1974
and
1975,
in many
places across
Kosova,
especially in the Prishtina
University Center and its dormitories. Calls were
389
made to continue the irredentist, national liberation
activities, with the final goal the unification with
Albania of Albanian lands annexed by Yugoslavia.
These actions were organized by the
organization called Revolutionary Group of
Kosova.
In the summer of
1974
the organization
published the newspaper
Zeri i
Kosovës
(Voice of
Kosova)
and had drafted a Manual for its
membership giving instructions to its members on
how to behave before eventual imprisonment,
during interrogations, during trials, and also while
serving their prison sentences in Serbian/Yugoslav
prisons.
Although after the second release from prison
on
8
June
1974,
Adem
Demaçi
had been in contact
with many known and unknown activists, with
many associates and members of clandestine
organizations, among whom were the members of
the Revolutionary Group of
Kosova,
however he
had not started any organized activity yet.
4.
The Yugoslav secret service, the UDB, and the
Communist Party, noting that
Adem
Demaçi
was
being visited by many citizens, that his sayings and
stances were commented, and noting that he had
already become the spiritual leader of Albanians,
the definitive decision to put
Demaçi
behind bars is
made. Only this way the establishment, the
390
Communist Party, and the UDB would feel
comfortable that Yugoslavia s number one public
enemy would not be able to take any concrete
action to undermine the Yugoslav system.
Therefore, in the fall of
1975,
the decision is made
to imprison
Adem Demaçi
for the third time. Even
though the UDB had accurate information that
Adem Demaçi
had not been able yet to form a
political organization or to join an existing
organization, they would not feel at ease until they
put him in a Serbian/Yugoslav prison cell.
Interrogations against the
35
political prisoners
of the political process of
1975,
(although more
than
100
individuals were imprisoned and tortured
during the interrogations), were the same as during
the time when chief criminals Spasoje Gjakoviq
and
Aleksander
Rankoviq were in charge of the
security service immediately after the Second
World War. Tortures against the detainees had
continued for more than
9
months, and they were
denied the right to engage attorneys, they were also
denied any contacts with investigative judges and
prosecutors, as was envisioned in the applicable
laws of the time, while prisoners were held in
solitary confinement up to
9
months, without any
access to press, books, walks in the prison yard, etc.
This time
Adem Demaçi
is accused of
establishing the Organization
Lëvizja
Nacional-
Qirimtare
e Kosovës
(National Liberation
Movement of
Kosova,
although at the time
391
mentioned in police and court documents,
Demaçi
was serving his
10
year prison sentence in the
Prison of Pozharevc.
Demaçi
is further accused of
giving the idea to publish the newspaper
Zeri
і
Kosovës
(Voice of
Kosova),
even though he had
never seen the newspaper before his arrest.
However, all this was not important to the
Yugoslav Communist Party, the secret service
-
UDB, the prosecution, investigative judge, District
Court in Prishtina, and the Supreme Court of
Kosova.
The decision to sentence
Adem Demaçi
and
34
other intellectuals was made by the
Serbian/Yugoslav leaders, and was executed by
Kosovar
leadership, where most of the
interrogators, torturers, accusers and judges were
Albanian.
While in
1958
Adem Demaçi
was sentenced to
5
years in prison and in
1964
to
15
years in prison,
because according to the then applicable laws he
could be accused and pronounced guilty ,
however, in the trial of
1975,
he was entirely
innocent in all aspects. Now the goal was not to
imprison and sentence the activist and individual
Adem Demaçi.
This time, the ultimate goal was to
imprison and sentence the IDEA
Demaçi.
This
means that in the political process of
1975,
the
Serbian/Yugoslav establishment intended to punish
the idea, vision political philosophy, and ultimate
goal of
Demaçi
-the demand for liberation of
Kosova
and other Albanian land under Yugoslav
392
administration,
and reunification of Albanians
under a common state in the Balkans.
Sentencing of
Adem Demaçi
in January of
1976
by the District Court in Prishtina to
15
years
in prison was only the next retaliation by the
Serbian/Yugoslav regime and its Albanian
quislings against the top irredentist, against the man
who had already become a symbol of resistance
and sacrifice, a symbol of confidence in victory and
triumph of the highest national, human, and
democratic ideals.
A Croatian newspaper of the time, immediately
after the
15
year prison sentence of
Adem
Demaçi,
concludes:
Adem
Demaçi,
before his most recent
incarceration in
1975
was once the leader of
Kosova
Albanians, and now, after this sentence he
is twice the spiritual leader of Albanians! And that
was true. After this sentencing of
Adem
Demaçi,
he
will be called Albanian Mandela, Albanian
Dreyfus, Albanian Zeus, Albanian Prometheus,
Albanian Jesus, etc.
With his life example and supernatural
sacrifice,
Adem
Demaçi,
had already become a
sacred national symbol of Albanians. Therefore, it
was not coincidental when in
1998
the General
Staff of the
Kosova
Liberation Army decided to
appoint
Adem
Demaçi as
the General Political
Representative of the
KLA.
Thus, he was given the
opportunity to be a strong voice for the
KLA
which
by many military strategists worldwide will be
393
considered as the most successful guerrilla
movement of the twentieth century, which together
with the NATO Alliance, led by the US, forced the
Serbian occupying forces to leave
Kosova
and
brought FREEDOM, for which
Adem
Demaçi
the
living hero of the Republic of
Kosova
had given so
much.
