End of Second World War was not the end of tragedy for Albanians outside the mother country - Albania. Although Albanians in Albania and Kosova were aligned on the right side with the Anti-fascist Alliance led by the Soviet Union, United States of America, and Great Britain, they were not able to realize the national unification; on the other hand, Italy and Germany had brought some kind of freedom that Kosova s Albanians did not enjoy before under the rule of the Serb-Croat- Slovene Kingdom; although the Bujan Conference was held resulting in a Resolution envisioning that Kosova after the World War II, based on the universal right of nations for self-determination, would reunite with Albania, and with guarantees from Russia, America, and England, all this would end and disappear in the Prizren Assembly in 1945, where under threat and blackmail the infamous decision was made on Kosova s forced union with Serbia. After the heroic resistance throughout Kosova, in the harsh winter of 1944/45, culminating in the Drenica Rebellion led by the national tribune Shaban Palluzha, and Gjilan rebellion led by mulla Idriz Gjilani, which was crushed by çetnik-partisan forces of Serbia and Yugoslavia, the Albanian 377 National Democratic Movement (ANDM) under¬ took a series of actions aimed at continuing the resistance against the reoccupation of Kosova and other Albanian territories by the AVNOJ Yugo¬ slavia. Repressive measures against members of the ANDM were of draconian proportions. A number of these patriots were shot, mostly without due process, many others were given severe prison sentences, including life sentences, whereas a very small number of them managed to pass the death borders of Yugoslavia, to save their life and find refuge in other countries in order to continue their patriotic activities from exile. 2. With the wounds of Albanians caused by the World War II still not healed and especially those caused after the war, the Serbian/Yugoslav government had macabre plans in place to continue with the realization of genocidal projects against Albanians. Plans of the Serbian chauvinist Çubri- loviq were taking new forms of retaliation against Albanians. Now this project was led by Aleksander Rankoviq, as the closest aide of the Yugoslav leader Josip Broz Tito. Therefore, in mid 50 s of the 20th century, two genocidal methods had been applied against Albanians, in parallel with each other: disarming of Albanians by force and their displacement under terror to Turkey. During these 378 actions, many thousands of Albanians were tortured, dozen of them killed under torture, whereas thousands of them were crippled for life. Although exact figures of Albanians forcefully displaced to Turkey during that campaign in 1955/56 were never produced, all facts indicate that the number was above 250.000 individuals. in such historical circumstances, when Albania was trying to survive the torments of the war and the inherited poverty, having no capacity to support the Albanians in their ethnic territories under Yugoslav reoccupation; at the time when Yugo¬ slavia had an almost friendly treatment in the international arena, both by East and West; at the time when in Kosova, as noted above, a terrible reign of repression and terror was present, any attempts to improve the situation were destined to be crushed in early stages. However, even under those terrible conditions, ideals of freedom and national reunification had not faded. It is worth noting here the example of the national tribune and ideologist of the national cause Metush Krasniqi, who, in 1958, had founded the organization Revolutionary Party for the Unification of Albanian Lands with the Mother Country-RPUALMC (Partia Revolucionare per Bashkìmìn e Tokove Shqiptare me Shtetin Arne). In the Statute of this Organization Metush Krasniqi, has envisaged the formation of the Detachment for the region of South Anamorava, also contemplating the armed struggle 379 as a means for liberation and unification with Albania. After an intense activity and imprisonment of Metush Krasniqi, along with other members of the RPUALMC, Sejdi Kryeziu, Mark Gashi, Qemajl Kallaba, etc., they were sentenced with severe prison terms of up to 18 years. The same year, but on another part of enslaved Kosova, the talented writer and the future symbol of national reunification, Adem Demaçi, appears. He had recently published the novel Gjarpinjtë e gjakut (Blood snakes), which was the first novel in Albanian language in Kosova. In 1958, he was imprisoned and sentenced to 5 years in prison. Both during the interrogation and the judicial process, Adem Demaçi remained behind his stance that Kosova and other territories under Yugoslav admi¬ nistration should reunite with Albania. In his closing arguments before the District Court in Prishtina, in February of 1959, Adem Demaçi, stated the following: From this stand I say again to you that if Serbia and Yugoslavia do not end up the occupation of Kosova and if they do not allow Kosova to secede and join Albania, then there will be no peace in the Balkans, or in Yugoslavia and Serbia. If Serbia is to continue with this policy toward Albanians, one day Serbia will cause the breakup of Yugoslavia and eventually will remain without Kosova too. That s all! 380 3. Adem Demaçi is released on November 1961, after three years spent in Prishtina prison and in the camp of Mitrovica e Sremit. Speaking of conditions he had witnessed following his first release from prison Demaçi said: Upon return from the prison of Mitrovica e Sremit, I soon realized that nothing had changed in Kosova. Instead, there was total police terror. Prishtina reminded you of a place after a volcanic eruption. Poverty, lack of perspective, intimidation ... People didn t seem to care that much about their life ... Police and the court have created a small hero out of me. People used to glorify my words and even add their words ... Before finally deciding to establish the political-patriotic organi¬ zation I spoke to my mother, Nazife. To my question: Should I take care of her or continue working for Albania, she said: One day mother Nazife will die but mother Albania will never die. Don t worry about mother Nazife and do what you can for mother Albania, my dear son! So I did what I thought was best and as my dear mother advised me! Patriotic organizations in Kosova were formed continuously during the entire period following the World War II. Besides the organization formed by Metush Krasniqi, as noted earlier, Organization Komiteti Revolucionar per Bashkimin e Trojeve 381 Shqiptare në Jugosllavi me Shqipninë (Revolu¬ tionary Committee for the Unification of Albanian Lands under Yugoslavia with Albania) was formed in 1960 by Kadri Halimi, Ali Aliu, and Ramadan Hoxha. This organization of patriotic forces outside administrative Albania testified categorically that Albanians under Yugoslav rule did not agree with their fate of living in a same state with southern Slavs, that is Serbs, Montenegrins, Croats, Slove¬ nes, and Macedonians. Proof of this determination of Albanians to continue their struggle for liberty and national unification was the decision of Adem Demaçi to form the organization Lëvizja Revolu¬ cionare për Bashkimin e Shqiptarëve (Revolutio¬ nary Movement for the Unification of Albanians) (LRBSH). Therefore, in autumn of 1963, in Mitrovicë, Adem Demaçi formed the organization Lëvizja Revolucionare për Bashkimin e Shqiptarëve (Revo¬ lutionary Movement for the Unification of Albanians). In a short period this organization was able to form its branches or District Committees as they were called at the time. These committees were formed in Prishtinë, Mitrovicë, Pejë, Gjakovë, Gjilan, Shkup, and Istanbul. Prishtina Committee was headed by Xhafer Mahmutxhiku, in Peja by Ramadan Shala, in Mitrovica by Hysen Daci, in Gjakova by Kadri Kusari, in Gjilan by Rexhep Elmazi, in Shkup by Mušli Kaj olii, and in Istanbul by Nijazi Saraçogllu. Before the formation of 382 District Committees, there were organized groups already operating in several cities. Therefore, in Pejë there was the organization Bashkimi Territorial і Shqiptarëve (Territorial Unification of Albanians), headed by Remzi Baloku, in Gjilan organization Mujo Ulqinaku, headed by the poet Rexhep Elmazi and in Gjakove the youth group Haki Taha, headed by the other poet Teki Dërvishi. 4. Based on the Program and Charter of LRBSH, it can be clearly seen that this organization founded and led by Adem Demaçi, was a direct continuation of the Prizren League, Peja League, National Defence of Kosova, Bujan Assembly, and Albanian National Democratic Movement. Article one of the Revolutionary Movement for the Unification of Albanians (Lëvizja Revolucionare per Bashkimin e Shqiptarëve), states: The first and final objective of our Movement is to secure the right to self-determination to secession for majority Albanian territories under Yugoslav administration, i.e., the first and final goal of our Movement is the liberation of Albanian provinces, annexed by Yugoslavia and unification of these provinces with the mother country - Albania. The Statute of the LRBSH, drafted by Adem Demaçi, inter alia, addresses the following: the 383 issue of the national character for the Movement, issue of territorial reunification of Albanians, issue of common market, and the issue of a common literary language. The tactics employed by this patriotic organization, which is elaborated in its Program, envisaged the following: to stay awaken at all times; to act today and not tomorrow; the Movement to be run by the masses which accept its Program; the Movement shall not have a cadre character; to avoid the use of promises, promotions, frauds, and intimidation. We should convince ourselves that our enemy will eventually lose the war. After all, we do not expect that the Albanian cause will be resolved from the perspective of western democracies or socialist democracies, but the Albanian cause will be resolved in accordance with historic developments, because Albanians are swimming with the tide, whereas enemies of Albanians are swimming against the tide and shamefully. Therefore, our struggle shall continue for as long as it takes, it shall be difficult and bloody, in the end - we will be victorious and proud. In the end, Albanian people will unite under the wings of the legendary double headed eagle. 5. Following a series of activities of the LRBSH, such as: formation of District Committees in Prishtinë, Mitrovicë, Pejë, Gjakovë, Gjilan, Shkup, 384 and Istanbul; after raising the national flags in many cities across Kosova, which had occurred for the first time after the end of World War II; after writing of slogans with patriotic content such as Long live Albania -our mother! , We want freedom! etc.; after establishing first contacts between the leadership of LRBSH in Prishtinë and Albania through diplomatic representatives of Albania to Turkey, and many other activities, the activities of the organization are finally discovered. As a result, more than 250 members and sympathizers of the organization are given various punishments, whereas during the interrogations in Prishtina, the patriot, poet, and teacher Fazli Greiçevci is killed under torture. To Adem Demaçi, number one public enemy in Yugoslavia, the maximum prison sentence of 15 years was reserved. The imprisonment of these patriots in May of 1964 resulted in the expansion of Albanian illegal movement influence in all areas of political life in Kosova and beyond. For the first time after the World War II, in Tito s Yugoslavia, a political organization like this one was able to shake the fabric of social and police establishment of the Yugoslav regime. This regime had begun to feel intimidated, among other things, because it had gone too far with the violence it exerted on the Albanian people, who have consistently demo- 385 nstrated that they would not retreat towards victory at all cost. Defense of the objectives of LRBSH by Adem Demaçi, both during the interrogations by Serbian/Yugoslav UDB, and during the trial, had terrified the occupiers of Kosova and other Albanian territories under Yugoslav administration, that henceforth, this struggle for liberation and national unification will be led by a man of vision, with a clear program, with courage and valor. By studying more closely the political processes of the Albanian illegal movement, after 1964, i.e., after the activities of Revolutionary Movement for the Unification of Albanians, one can conclude that the majority of groups, organizations, and future political parties were sprouts from the same tree, young sprouts at times even stronger than the trunk from which they sprung. In this, among others, lies the historical importance of the LRBSH activity led by the top irredentist of Kosova - Adem Demaçi. 386
